Super Paper Mario reviewed at Gamespot. Uh oh...Wow.

the thoroughbred said:
Well since they blatently ****ed up Twilight Princess' score, they couldn't give SPM a higher score, even if it deserved it, so they have to stick with an equal. But I stopped taking any scores seriously after the Twilight Princess score, especially that from gamespot.

They are different reviewers. Plus just because you disagree with one's opinion doesn't mean you should ignore them. You can find a controversial review for every site, hell most people don't agree with the games GAF hypes up.

I'm not using it as proof of anything- just pointing out that this perception that SPM is getting bad scores isn't true.
Don't worry, my rant wasn't directed at you since you weren't using it as proof of SPM's Godliness.

The Wii controller makes the game more fun to play than the other versions but at heart its still the same mediocre GTA clone it always was. Nintendo fans are just flipping out because they never played many GTA games before. In fact its as much of a cash in as Ubisoft's Rival Swords port

Are they the same fans who prefer the Wii version over the PS2, PS3 and 360 versions?

I'm not saying the Wii version isn't the funnest, I'm just saying that Godfather as a whole is overhyped especially that port.

No, no, I don't mean it won't be a good game, or it's not worth playing, etc.

I mean this idea that the score has to be standard setting, that it's worth getting mad at media outlets over, that it's some sort of crucible for the console itself, or a major player in the console wars. If this were releasing at a different time, people just wouldn't care as much, especially since it's not a straight platformer. PM2 was pretty good, but I thought the reason people were really excited was the idea that it was going to be a Mario platformer with cool art. I saw Ethelred trying to say in another thread that no one really thought that for a long time now, but that is crap, and that would have been worth some excitement. A Mario rpg is the 2nd coming of christ, blather blather, etc. Really?

Most of the people calling it the 2nd coming of christ are saying it tongue in cheek and are really looking forward to the title as another quality Intelligent System's product. You are right though, some people are taking it a little too seriously

Did we all agree that giving a 7 for sound is a not-so-subtle bleating for VA? I'm glad IntSys didn't pay such demands any heed.

Well, it's been pretty clear to me all along!

Maybe you should consult Magic 8-Ball more often, Musashi.

I don't give a shit about scores, but I want to comment on this...

For me, personally, a new Mario RPG is a big deal. It's an inventive series that's produced several stellar games. The thought that this is a platformer hybrid is just icing on the cake for me.

I won't pretend my opinion is common.

umm..no. Please take your conspiracy theories elsewhere

The weakest element is the game's audio, which is a little too retro. Although the soundtrack is solid, there are no standout tracks. The sound effects are effective, albeit a bit too familiar. Voice is used too sparingly, though what's there fits the archetype set by the previous games.

My mistake. Obviously it was the solid but not standout tracks and effective albeit familiar effects that hurt the sound.

What were you expecting 10/10. Every game has its flaws and too be honest Super Paper Mario is a last gen. port with last gen sound and visuals. of course its going to be docked a little.

So I was just going through all the gamespot scores. I noticed how high Metroid is. And I immediately thought 'let me watch the video review'. Damn Retro really have a lot of weight on their shoulders for this game's sequel. I mean Metroid Prime 3 is going to have to be everybit as good as MP1. I don't know how they will keep everything fresh and stuff. I hope Miyamoto is upending some tea tables with them. Plus a healthy delay is always good. Looking forward to loads of easter eggs with this game.

Anyone that hasn't ordered this yet- its 45$ at Amazon.com

You must have missed the branding meeting

Gamecube level visuals and sound on the Wii are totally "new gen"

Seriously though, he doesn't complain about the lack of 5.1 or anything, so I think the retro chiptunes thing SPM has going just wasn't to his taste.

Hm..i'm going to have to rent the game.

I tried paper mario 2 and got kind of bored with it. *fears a banning from Amir0x*

Early on i saw a couple movies of this game and was pumped. I thought i was finally getting a mario 2d platformer that wasn't confined to a handheld game. So when reviews started coming out that it was more less that and more like a PM3 game my interest really took a hit.

But i think i'll give it a shot and see if it grabs me.

Man, I just went to the gamespot system wars forum, and then I remembered why I left that place in the first place. so ****ing bad

"Competent but does nothing great or original to stand out" typically deserves a score of 5. It's not "absolute perfection (or at least less than half a point away from it)" which would be a 10.

Considering that Nintendo doesn't think that graphics matter anymore, and put out a last-gen console because of it, they should be happy to score 5's on the graphics front, and to never again break into the 9's on the final totals. Low prices and high profits don't make the greatest games of all time.

And Nintendo's audio hasn't been close to legendary since the days of the SNES either.

It's only rabid Nintendo fanboys who give games like Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario 10's across the board (which is actually in defiance of Nintendo's philosophies), and the reviewers who are scared to death of them.

8.8 is still a very high score, and I'm still going to buy the game when I eventually get a Wii.

Solid gold post. Thanks for making my night.

$30 at Gamestop. Use this coupon on CAG forums to get $5 off a Wii game from Beat Buy. Buy Far Cry and open season for $15 a piece and trade them in to Gamestop. They have a special that when you trade 2 wii games in you get a new one.

I thought he was saying no one should have thought this was a pure platformer for a long time now, which is correct. When you consider the developer, the series, and even the footage we saw, it's confusing as to why so many people thought it was Mario Bros. with trippy art. Nintendo does deserve some blame for this, since the game was under wraps for so long.

A new Paper Mario game is worth some excitement, anyway, and it's getting some damn good scores. GAF is getting more retarded by the day.

It's kind of painful to watch actually. It reminded me of someone requesting Corruption be 3rd person and I think beezlebobo said "just stand behind the person playing."
heh. That is sort of funny.

Why do people go there, GS has some great forums outside that hell hole. Thats where GS stores its garbage.

Seems like it, fanboys jump at any news that isn't "good" news for the Wii. OMFG it got an 8.8 wow, seriously, only here at GAF did I see this game hyped so much it was bound to take a beating.

I hate gamerankings. I especially hate it when stupid people on message boards use it as "proof" of how good a game is. The average of a ton of people's scores for a game is not the final word on how good a game is.

And, what is the final word? Its as closest to a 'final word' as you can possibly get.

Catchpenny said:

The final word in trolling is Gamerankings.

Ok but when you are having a discussion about how a game is perceived with someone, your opinion has no meaning at all, its just yours. If you want to show an example that a certain game is perceived to be a certain way you must site proof that people feel that way, so having a database of reviews is perfect for that.

I can't afford to buy every game. So I use gamerankings for the "final word" on the quality of the game.

Trolling? I'm not sure about that. Perhaps in some instances, but certainly not in the past few SPM threads.

I cited the SPM average in the 1up review's thread since the number Shane gave the game was turned into such a big issue. Some guys were using the 8.0 score as leverage to claim the game was bad, and I thought, "Well hey, here's a bunch of other professional reviews who think the game is great," and posted the link. Is that really trolling?

The problem I have with people using gamerankings as proof of game x being better than game y is because there is no universal scale. 1UP rating differently than IGN and some sites using a 0 to 5 scale are both examples. Hype also plays a big role, take a look at Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. TP is .1 lower than WW but no one in their right mind would say Wind Waker was a better game. Gamerankings is like wikipedia, its good for personal knowledge, but it cant really be used as a definitive source.

Why's that? I mean, the statement's wrong, I'm just curious how it can be justified.

I was getting preemptively upset over another review bash, not your better investigation of the title.

Wait a minute, we now like Wind Waker more than Twilight Princess? I must have missed a memo.

I loved Wind Waker more than most people did, but Twilight Princess was a better Zelda.
