Super Robot Taisen OG PS4 Being Localized in English

Why not? The ways they get the crossovers to work are half the charm, even if understanding them involves checking a translation FAQ or being an /m/ regular.

I'm more referring to the overarching plot. Hence why I state Z and Alpha 3 as more of exception, since the anime mechs actually contribute to the overall plot in a significant manner beyond crossovers.

Standalone titles the anime mechs are kinda just there with limited plot impact.

Because unlike the crossover ones (including and even ESPECIALLY Z and Alpha 3), the OG games' plots pretty much make sense and are not 100% bullshit?

The OG plots involving DC takes itself quite seriously and is more atone to a Real robot show's plot. The problem is once I see Super robots like RyuKoOh showing up, I can no longer take the plot at face value. Not to mention they're still amazing writing or anything (I'm not expecting much.)

I'd import, but uh... Southeast Asian "English".

Yeaaaah... No. Not going to make myself suffer through SEAsia's low standards for localization again.

This is a sequel to those, though its a bit more complicated than that.

Back in 2006ish those games were remade for the PS2 and released together as "Super Robot Wars Original Generations". While the basic plot was the same, there were a number of changes in details

After that, the game "Super Robot Wars Original Generation Gaiden" was released, which was a direct sequel. It was relatively short (~30 stages) but advanced the plot, despite officially being a "sequel"

A few years back, the next game, "The 2nd Super Robot Wars OG" was released on the PS3.

This new game comes after that one.

Yes, it plays essentially the same way, only with some added systems (most notably the Pair system)

Thanks for the detailed explanation!

The link doesn't work...

Thanks! Botched that link pretty good. That'll teach me for posting so late.
Link.

Ah this makes sense, thanks for the clarification. If I remember those GBA games right you played as one of either two main characters, Ryosuke and.....can't remember the other one.

... LOL you combined their names its Kyosuke (THE BEST) and Ryusei. At least in OR1 you got to pick in the second game Kyosuke is the main character (who once again, is the best).

The first one gave you a choice between starting with Ryuusei Date or Kyousuke Nanbu, though saying you "play" as them is sorta stretching the point. Especially in the later games there isn't really any central viewpoint character, and even the first game's plot canonically ends up being a combination of the two routes.

If anyone has other questions re: the plotlines and stuff I'm willing to answer ot the best of my ability

No physical version ?

I don't think they implied there wouldn't be? But I can check again

At work so I can't watch yet, but is the gameplay in this one at all similar to Endless Frontier and Exceed on DS? Because if so, I'm all in.

Any examples? Outside of sword art online, the others sea English localization seems decent to me. Or maybe my English just sucks but sao aside, all of them are comparable to US or UK translation.

So that stage took me 2 and a half hours (granted with some interruptions and watching all the battle animations), EXHard sure is what it says.

Anyway, a few things we do know about this new game is that the SRWJ protagonists will play a large part.

There are two main characters in SRWJ, Touya Shun and Calvina Coulange. In the game you chose one, and the other never appears. In Moon Dwellers, they will of course both be present.

Touya I find not particularly interesting. He's a fairly standard "Teenage Boy With Surprising Past Who Pilots Giant Robot To Save The World", and thats a character type I just don't find very interesting. But its not surprising they use him as the face for the new game. Also not surprising that of the three units you can choose in SRWJ, his default unit here is going to be Granteed, which is very much a Super Robot, and fits his character type well.

On the other hand, I find Calvina significantly more intersting. She's an adult, unlike Touya, and she is actually a military pilot. I forget the precise details of how her backstory was presented in J, but the gist of it was that she was part of an elite team of pilots, who were ambushed and wiped out by a mysterious enemy. Calvina was the only survivor, and afterwards she quit the military, until she stumbles into the cockpit of a mysterious unit. It seems in Moon Dwellers her default unit will be the Bellzelute, which is very much a Real Robot, and fits her character type as a military pilot.

The big gimick behind the OG characters in J wasn't just the 2 selectable characters and three selectable mechs (The third being Coustwell, a melee-focused Real Robot, that I find rather dull. On New Game+ you can also choose the overpowered Vorlent. Both of these will preseumably become available as well for Touya and Calvina in Moon Dwellers), is the other three OG characters.

Commonly known in the fanbase as the "Powerpuff Girls", they are Festenia Muse, Katia Grineal and Melua Melna Meia. They act as subpilots for either Touya or Calvina, since they are able to interface with the units, and in fact they stole whatever unit you chose and are the ones to deliver it to Touya or Calvina. You can only have one of them at a time as your sub-pilot, and which one you use changes the finisher for the unit, and each of the three provides their own bonuses and spirit commands.

After you receive the upgrade for your chosen unit (Granteed Dracodeus, Bellzelute Brigandi, Coustwell Brachium or Raftclans) the girl you have used hte most as your sub-pilot will unlock a super-special finisher for that unit. I'm assuming a similar situation will obtain in Moon Dwellers, albeit one for Touya and one for Calvina

Another reason I find Touya pretty meh is that he is pretty much in a harem situation with the three girls, while Calvina (to be honest somewhat sadly) does not share that.

Its highly likely that Calvina will share backstory with Selena Recital, from The 3rd Super Robot Wars Alpha, and who was introduced into OGverse in the Super Robot Wars OG Dark Prison sidestory game. Their backstories are quite similar, and this would be an easy way to introduce both into the main plotline.

Also being introduced this game are the OG characters from Super Robot Wars GC, on the GameCube, but unfortunately I know very, very little about them, so I can't really provide any information.

You won't need to, considering most of GC's plot is going to be changed in the game including the enemy faction and maybe even the Akatsuki twins' personalities as well. It's all due to this huge licensing problem with various game companies.

Shit, I just re-remembered PS4 has no region lock. Fuck it, I'm importing this once I can.
and also when I get an actual PS4.

I should probably finish up J, actually. I got 30 chapters in before getting pulled away by other things.

Calvina operating Bellzelute automatically makes her queen bae for the game, it was easily my immediate choice in J for the mecha, and I've never seen sniping look so goddamn stylish, which is really impressive considering that you end up shooting giant dumb green crystal arrows.

I don't hate Toya, but I ended up picking him for my J run so whatever. I'm just hoping there's an option to rename certain weapons and things like there was in J. I had some DUMB shit set up.

it's actually fucking happening oh man

and with Fates releasing tomorrow I'm in SRPG nirvana at the moment

hold me

Real [/I] robot show's plot. The problem is once I see Super robots like RyuKoOh showing up, I can no longer take the plot at face value. Not to mention they're still amazing writing or anything (I'm not expecting much.)

But half the charm of the OGverse is that it's kind of a weird Real Robot plot in a Super Robot universe.

Kind of the reverse of Daigaurd.

Sorry I meant will they be on this new one, sorry I worded that weirdly lol

Absolutely. The core characters, SRX Team and ATX Team along with misc other OG characters make up the Steel Dragon Squad which is the de facto good guy force. They also unofficially include the Kurogane crew like Sanger and Ratsel.

I wonder just how much of Alpha 3 they are going to include. Its getting to the point where they almost have to start actually dealing with the Balmar, but it feels like they at least need to introduce the Ardyguns first. Cobray is really, really about due to actually appear, having been teased as far back as the Divine Wars anime and the intro scene for Original Generations.

I also expect Selena to get Solereas, to replace her (admittedly super badass) custom Gespenst from Dark Prison. Shin RyuKouOh/KouRyuOh might still be a little early, but I gotta say I'm really ready to move on to them. Dunno if they will bother with Raiko Kai or Gouryu Kai either.

So many possibilities!

Also it looks like we're getting some sort of Einst return, only labeled as the "Geist" in the scan.

I've got mixed feelings about the Alles Geist returning. It got triple destroyed in OGs2 getting eaten by AI1, then by Adamatron, then when Adamatron exploded. And it was fitted with a Jetzt core, not an Einst so it doesn't make sense for it to regress like that but gotta fill that enemy roster I suppose. It'd just be nice to have some sense of finality to villains, even by SRW standards. I'm seriously expecting Bian to show up after Kaiser Ephes and reveal he was the TRUE mastermind all along.

Geist better have Vacant Soul as its theme again that's all I can say.

For Alpha 3 stuff, I think they'll at least show Selena's team getting stomped, similar to like they did with Hugo in OG Gaiden. I think one of the big surprises will be Baran showing up real quick as like, a scouting mission or something before Balmar plot kicks off in earnest with a little fight with Touma / Sangar.

I would lose my mind if Astranagant showed up, but I'm expecting Ing to pilot it with Cobray acting as the "spirit guide" or something.

Ugh. Like, I'm not exactly a huge Cobray fan, but I really don't want Ing ganking his position. I find Ing pretty meh overall, and didn't like how he got a super-special Not!Huckebein in 2ndOG while Ryoto and Rio got relegated to whatever you happened to have available.

But at least finally both Ryoto and Rio have will have Hu-I mean Exbeins of their own. And hopefully the Gunner Frame is now an actual proper frame and not the World's Worst Support Unit

As long as I get the Garmarid or Cerebrus, I'll be happy with whoever else they decide to use in Moon Dwellers.

If there were ever two characters you could bet your life savings on for making it into an OG game, these two would be them =p

An unexpected upside of this is that people might actually recognize my avatar now!

Alteisen was the exact point where I realized I liked an original more than any of the crossover stuff in the other games. Stabbing things with a pile bunker appeals to me on a deep personal level.

any chance Gunleon would show up in this game? Funny story, I got a friend into SRW by showing him some random videos of attacks from Z since that was the newest one at the time. I ended up never actually playing that, meanwhile he ended up playing through shit tons of SRW games including many japanese-only ones (he can't read it but doesn't need to). Needless to say he is pretty hyped for this.

I covered this a page back or so, and while its not impossible for SRWZ originals to show up here, its pretty unlikely. The game after this one is where that would become more likely.

That being said, we could get Selena, Calvina and Setsuko together and they can be sad military ladies out for revenge together.

Well we already had them in 2ndOG and there is no reason they shouldn't return

From an asset perspective, for sure. Story perspective, who knows? They've been taking out the stops though. Creating a new post-story bot for the R protagonists was pretty awesome of them.

They are only 2 units, only one of which can be used at a time, so there is no real reason they shouldn't be included. Especially since they have the assets and I expect most returning units to be, as always, largely recycled from 2ndOG

I want my Lightning Frame back. Heck, give us a new combining super broken unit with 2 Time Flow Engines.
