SMASHGAF RANBATS SEASON 4 SIGNUP LINK - REGISTRATION CLOSES THIS FRIDAY - QUOTE TO REVEAL

SOLDNERKEI YOU BETTER GET IN HERE AND PLAY ME! :-P

Just thought I'd share this.

Loser's finals at our work tournament, me (the Mario) and Shiek are 1-1 in best of 3 and Shiek picked the Duck Hunt stage. Something special happened, and we had a blast.

This was a fun watch.

You ever play against Shamrock's Pac? Shit's crazy.
And Abadango did well with Pac at Apex
Never had problems with Shamrock's Pac-man.

ROB has gyro traps.

Also Abadango got top 8 at APEX
K, I'll look him up.

Edit: He has some good stuff, but the two sets I've seen so far seem like the opponents don't know the matchup either. Hard to say. He definitely has some good defensive tools others don't, though, and they're hard to counter as well.

Yeah I am going to definitely seat this season out, after this week I wont have access to Wii U for an indifinite time. Could be a month, could be 3 days, but I'd rather not risk it.

:(

To be quite honest, I had to choose between Yoshi and Shiek but went with Yoshi. If it helps, I doubt my other 2 picks are part of such debate.

Customs aren't meant to be balanced (officially stated) so it's stupid to use them in tournaments. Too many idiots trying to make the game like Melee.

I like customs but I wouldn't cry if people stopped using them, my best character doesn't really need them.

Customs for Mii Fighters and Palutena are necessary though.

I hope there's a Captain Rage Quit amiibo, that way more people can fear the Doc. ;)

So um, ZeRo is officially anti-customs. Here's a Reddit comment chronicling his words on Twitter.
I personally agree. For the most part characters that are already really strong gain so much from them like Sheik, Rosa, Mario, Wario, Pika, Sonic and ESPECIALLY Villager, and the only lower tier characters that actually shoot up to the top are Brawler, Palutena and DK. The way I see it they don't make the game more balanced and just add jank that I feel are unhealthy to the meta.

I think customs can be really fun especially to watch, but not worth it imo.

I have already made my current stance on customs clear, and while I appreciate the options they give to the Marios and Fox, I honestly don't think they're necessary. None of their default specials are bad, even FLUDD, and Doc's shitty recovery is mostly because he has bad horizontal aerial movement, something that can only be fixed by trading his best OoS move for better recovery which IMO isn't worth it.

I'll miss Fox's 64 laser though, shit made him great.

I feel like customs aren't meant for competitive play. Some of the are really derp and dumb, which ruins neutral as Zero said. I always didn't really like customs from the start anyway. You either have to ban none of them or ban all of them, can't just ban a few.

My character becomes stupid with customs on anyway. Rosalina becomes insane with them as well.

I like customs or, at least, the ida behind them. Maybe they should just restrict them to a few sets per character for tournaments. Like 4 sets per character (including the standard one) to avoid the super broken ones.

Fand, it's totally cool to sit the season out. Look forward to having you in Season 5. :-)

This Twitter discussion is exactly my thoughts on customs:

@ZeRoSSB I don't see a world where more options = less gameplay. That feels illogical.

. @RiotNickAllen That's what I originally thought. But customs often turn into centralized decision making. One custom does it all.
Great examples of this are Bowser and Donkey Kong. Dash Slash is amazing, and completely changes how the character plays. Cronox will agree, I'm sure, that the move is straight up addictive. It turns some matchups into a joke. Mewtwo has no hope against custom Bowser. Without customs, Bowser has a rough time in the matchup, though.

On the other hand, while Dash Slash makes Villager extremely manageable, Villager gains his own custom, the Trip Sapling. This custom makes the matchup almost impossible for Bowser, completely negating any benefit he gains from Dash Slash. As a result, the matchup becomes entirely surrounded around the Trip Sapling - if it's down, Bowser is fucked. If it isn't, Bowser has a really good shot. Dash Slash basically turns Bowser into a whirl of unpredictable chaos. He goes from a low risk, low reward character that makes his wins off of good reads to a high risk, high reward character that makes everyone wet their pants if they don't have the matchup mastered.

Initially, I just thought it was great to give characters more options, but in reality, there are a few customs that are straight upgrades, and so powerful that they completely "remake" the character into something he/she isn't intended to be. That isn't a good thing. It isn't good that Bowser has an air dash, that Villager gains the ultimate camp move, that Donkey Kong is basically "Up B: The Character", or that Rosalina can sit back and pelt you from across the screen + disruption while sitting behind Luma. These moves take characters with defined weakness and circumvent them entirely.

After Evo, it'll be interesting to see how the community proceeds. If a lot of tournaments go no-customs, I'll bring it up for a vote on the ranbats. In general, though, I think we should do what the big tournaments do, because our practice here needs to be relevant. Even better, Sakurai could just balance the customs so they're all interesting and worth using, while toning down the stupid ones.

I like customs (and I like that characters like Kirby and Ganondorf become viable with them), but yeah, I won't deny some are pretty stupid. I was using Pikachu with HSB against Snacks earlier and I killed at 62%~ fully charged off a good read I made and it was pretty lol. With how everyone feels about customs, perhaps we should try a ranbat season without customs (maybe after Evo?) I don't make the call for that though; Karst? EDIT: Ah kay, as soon as I post this lol.

GGs Snacks. I'm pretty familiar with the Diddy MU with Pikachu, but not so much Shulk, so it was good practice. Fun matches; you got a great Greninja despite how much you complain about him lol.

It was like 40%, I don't know.
I saved that Diddy Kong replay on Battlefield though.

Ugh sucks having a character that plays completely different with customs. Makes me question why Palutena with how much effort was put into her customs, has the most boring default move set in the game.

SmashGAF's 7th most-played character is...

main.png

Pikachu: 63 points (7 mains, 17 secondaries, 8 tertiaries)

Another Smash 64 veteran lands in the top 10! I'm pretty sure I've never seen a Pikachu online in For Glory, which makes this placement somewhat surprising... except not at the same time, because I'm well aware that Pikachu remains a popular character and is as competitively viable as ever in Smash Wii U/3DS. Pikachu seems to get talked about quite a bit around here, too! One interesting thing is that despite its high placement, there are only seven Pikachu mains in SmashGAF; it reached #7 on its sheer popularity as a secondary character!

#6 is coming up tomorrow!

Pikachu <3 Love playing him so much though I still have SD problems that I'm slowing ironing out. I use Pikachu for fun in all the other Smash games, but this is the first where I took really seriously. One of my favorite Pokemon too (and I'm not a gen 1 loyalist or anything lol).

Hmm so who do we have left who will most likely be top picks.. Captain Falcon will obviously be #1, Rosaluma, Sanic, Sheik, Metaknight
lol
, Wigi..?

I'm feeling generous today and have a bit of free time, so would anyone be interested in a "wall of shame" reveal of the five least-scoring characters? Let me know!

Hmm... interesting theories, one and all. ;)

Oh wow, karst you really so down in the game? I empathize,it's frustrating to play characters that can just do anything, and while yeah, Characters are sometimes better in other games it's never as bad as in this game. Sakurai being so out of touch with the community doesn't help at all. With Samus, it's incredibly frustrating to play a character that has so many crippling weaknesses and instead of fixing them, she gets nerfed in the "balance" update. The fact that the balance consisted of mainly nerfing characters really speaks for itself.

But even with those problems I love how dynamic the game is. It's super fun and love mastering my characters. I know It must've been a huge punch in the gut being waiting for Mewtwo so bad and him turning out so mediocre, especially when you don't like many characters, but I don't think you're anywhere near mastering him and it's hard to catch up with people that have months of experience with their characters, as evidenced by your superb bowser play.

With that said, people we need to get the doubles fight down

In the mean time, I can play

Yes please! I'd quite enjoy seeing DK as the top of the bottom. Though once people realized he inherited Brawl Meta Knights Mach Tornado he is probably higher up. Hate his overly good up B, I feel like I win without trying.

I don't know what to tell you Karst except just keep playing and get the bad Mewtwo plays out of the way. That and keep voting for Ridley. It's the villain we've all been waiting for.

Though even if Ridley does make it in chances are you'd have to play him the way just about all heavies are played, with the old bait n' bash.
