Brackets for Season 4 are up!

I THINK I sent invites out to everyone for viewing, but my phone was being weird. Let me know if you guys got the Google Doc invite.

There was a huge bracket vacuum due to Tansut, Soldnerkei, and Beef not returning for this season. Most people moved up in some fashion.

I still need two people to fill out Bracket 7. I see lots of folks post here that haven't join. No pressure, but don't be shy! :-)

Didn't get an invite, but I was also a late signup. If you missed me, I'll take one of those Bracket 7 slots. :)

I didn't get the Google doc invite

Dude, thanks for what you did but you shouldn't have to do that. That SD was my own dumb mistake, no need for you to SD on purpose to make it even, though I do appreciate it.

I do that often, too. Smash etiquette. That's like when I'm playing online, a few ducks to let the opponent know, "that was awesome" after a good kill.

my secret tech is I SD on purpose when my opponent has the lead and the stock count is even to get my opponent to also SD. It doesn't work all the time though, so don't use it too much.

Alright, now everyone should have invites. Except for two people that failed at writings their own email address down - send me a PM with your email address if that is you.

Ive played 40 online 1v1 matches and won 3.

Anyone worse than me at this game? Mega Man player here... My first Smash game.

Practice makes perfect. Megaman plays very differently from other characters, I would suggest learning the fundamentals first with another character if your still struggling with Megaman.

Edit: if your talking about Palutenas superspeed, shielding helps. Lightweight.....yeah becareful when against that.

Hey Man, first smash game as well!! Winning in this game I don't think it comes easy! Pick a character you like and enjoy the ride! So many things to learn but it's really fun! Really unique compared to other fighting games!

Given that it's your 1st Smash game, I'd recomend starting with an easier character to play as. Smash is already a very unique fighting game that can take some time to get used, and Megaman doesn't play like any other character in the series.

I'd say try a character like Mario, who's pretty much perfect for beginners.

Your Fox made me pretty scared to go as Zelda again, given how much you were able to juggle me.

I think I started to get my head around zelda! But reading it still is a very hard thing to do! I usually play very offensive, but my defense is terrible! Love how patient you are, wonder if something you had to learn! I usually get punished pretty bad for rushing down in smash!

Any rule changes for this season of Ranbats?
Nope. The only thing we talked about is adding the DK stage, but after playing on it a lot I recognized it isn't a great competitive stage (though neither are Wuhu, Skyloft, and Delfino).

So, how DOES one deal with customs Palutena? She's kicking everyone's ass here :T
Spot dodge Super Speed.
During Lightweight, spam dodges. Palutena is punishable on any grab she commits to, so she wants to land the jab into tick throw instead.

I'm surprised I moved up, I think I tied with Beef last season though so I guess it makes sense. Well, I'm ready to get my ass beat lol
You have grown a lot since you started!

It's something I practiced. I used to be a very offensive player who always approached my opponent and tried to never give them a chance to get away. Thing is Marth and Zelda are the characters I use the most, and that kind of playstyle simply doesn't work with them, especially at the level of skill I was at a few months ago.

So I slowly learned to be more patient and how to read rolls and air-dodges, though I'm still not too great at that.
Then in a game I'd generally start off playing a bit more defensive until I think I figured out my opponests habits, and then I'd start playing much more aggresively. It's been working for me pretty well. I still make some the same dumb mistakes like over-commiting and approaching with moves that have too much end-lag, but it's not as bad as it used to be.

I'm a decent Mega Man main who's played the shit out of every Smash game, and I'll echo what everyone else has already told you: hold off on playing Mega Man until you've learned the basics with a more beginner-friendly character, like Mario, Link, or Captain Falcon. Mega Man plays unlike all past or present Smash fighters, and playing him well requires a pretty solid understanding of the game's basic mechanics and systems to begin with. You're facing a hugely frustrating uphill battle if you try to learn Smash from the ground up as Mega Man.

Once you've got a solid foundation, though, definitely start dedicating yourself to playing Mega Man! He's a wildly fun character with unique strengths once you know how to play him right, and we can always use more Mega Mains around here. :)

Do we have the go to do our ranbats now or should we wait until Lucas + Miiverse stage (which I think should be legal unless there's some silly gimmick that we're not aware yet so far...) is out? Like, I'm not actually expecting much, but what if there's an actual balance patch that comes with them? lol

I'm waiting a week or so before starting my ranbats either way. Need a tad more adjustment to my Shulk/Pika customs...

SETUP:

• Each player belongs to a bracket.

• Player names are listed as GAFNAME(NNID).

• Each week, you are responsible for playing one new person – of your choice - in your bracket by Sunday night.

• Record the score in Google Spreadsheets using the invitation you were provided with.

o 1 = Winner.

o 0 = Loser.

o The horizontal cells from your name are your score; the vertical is for reference against who you played against.

• The format is Round Robin – everyone plays everyone in their bracket once.

IN-GAME RULES:

• First to 5 wins takes the set.

• 1v1.

• Customs are legal, items and equipment are not.

• Either player may switch characters between matches.

• Time Out Clause: if the match timer hits “0”, the player with the lowest damage % wins.

• In-game mechanics result in the stage decision (each player picks; game decides).

• When starting a set, each player may post two stages that are banned for the set.

• For the purposes of this rule, omega-version stages are all one “stage”.

• If a player wins on a stage, that player may not pick that stage for the next two rounds of the set.

• Legal stage list:

Smashville

Town and City

Lylat Cruise

Skyloft

FAQ:

I am new to SmashGAF – can I join?

Yes!  Anyone is welcome to play!  This is about having fun and fostering a sense of community.  If you missed the sign-up deadline, keep an eye out so you can join in next season.

What should I do to try and find my matches?

PM people on NeoGAF!  Try to work out times instead of hoping it all works out.  If a player has been banned, PM me for an e-mail contact.

What if my opponent and I are having trouble making our match happen within the one-week period?

You have a two-week grade period to play each match, but do your best to play your match within the one-week period provided. If you do not play a match one week, you must play two the next to catch up.  I will be lenient on ranbans, however, and will only ban a player after the ranbat season has concluded and matches are left unplayed.

What should I do if I have tried to set up a ranbat match with someone, but they are unresponsive?

PM me the evidence of your attempts so that I can make an informed decision regarding ranbans.

Why is <Insert Rule> the case instead of <Insert Other Rule>?

Everything exists as it does because I feel it is a good policy. Nothing is cut into diamond, however, and if the majority player base feels a policy change is needed, I fully welcome discussion on the issue.

Can I join late?

Unless someone drops out mid-season, you will have to wait until the next season begins. There is no player cap, however, so you will be welcome to join when the next season begins.

Can I play ahead, or even finish my entire season right away?

Sure, go for it! I encourage this, actually.

Should I wire my connection?

Hell yes you should!  Here are two methods to improve your connection:

1) Wiring your Wii U through an Ethernet adapter is the best option.  A wireless connection will never stack up to a wired one.  Here is a link to a cheap adapter that many players here use, and it works wonderfully:

http://tinyurl.com/qej8w74

2) If your modem is far away from your Wii U, you can try a Powerline Interner Adapter.  These work by channeling your internet connection through an electrical socket.  I do not use one personally, but several GAF members have praised their efficacy.  Here is a list of options; if a GAF member wants to weigh in on the various levels of quality present here, I am glad to recommend one over the others:

How were the brackets decided?

This season, the top 2 players will move up, and the bottom 2 players will move down.  Brackets featuring new players will be far more flexible in moving up or down levels.

I was banned in a previous.  Can I rejoin?

All bans are one-season long.

You have grown a lot since you started!
Aww, thanks! It's all because of you guys that I do my best to improve in order to keep up with you all. :)

Two of my opponents won't be here after Lucas drops for an undisclosed period of time, but I'd really like to see Miiverse and if it's a viable alternative to Battlefield. This is a tricky decision, Karst what do you think? Maybe we should give ourselves an extra week in case the meta shifts mid-season?

Your zelda doing great punishing rolls with teleport that's really cool! and that match ending was Epic!!

I'm starting to feels I need to hold on a bit! I think a more carefully rush down with fox might work better! now I'm trying to put some work on Zss but I'm not sure what kind of play style suits her! every time I follow up I end up in really bad situations. Would you know any good Zss player worth watching some games!
