Super Smash Bros Wii U Review Thread

As someone who knows close to nothing about this game, is it supposed to be as good as Melee?

It depends on what you're looking for in a Smash game.

Content-wise Smash 4 is the obvious winner.

But if one puts Melee on a pedestal, then it can be easy to see non-Melee mechanics as inferior.

3DS version was new and was stressing that system visually.

Reviews aren't made in a vacuum, nor are they particularly objective (because that would be dumb). Smash Wii U is going to come out after Smash 3DS and most reviewers are going to play it having already exhausted the core mechanics on 3DS.
Yeah, that's true, that'll be a factor.

But another factor, I think, could be a tendency to compare directly to the recently released 3DS version. Like when it's time to assign a score, thinking "well, I gave that sneaky 3DS version an 8.8, and this one has more stuff and better graphics." Especially if the same person reviews both.
I think they are referring to IGN's review of Pokemon ORAS where they put a score of 7.8 and the negative listed was too much water. In their review its actually detailed and it makes sense but it looks funny at the end.
I still don't get the big fuss about it. I mean, many of us have played Ruby and Sapphire, and it's a pretty apparent, annoying issue with the map. I guess it could need explanation in some context though, idk.

Though I have to say I love the Earth and Hawaii reviews. Get that water outta here, 7.8! Lol.
My metacritic prediction : 88

Because it's my birth year.
~1900 year old confirmed.

Smash Tour is going to be my most played mode, at least this holiday.
Should have been playable online though. But I understand it's more of a local thing.

idk it all looks very confusing ..like all the stats icon for stuff looks very complicated. I played smash run and I'm STILL don't remember what half the stat icons stands for and the logos are allll over the map =/. As someone who doesn't have anyone to play locally with beside my brother ( he's 6 btw ) ..i doubt he'll understand anything going on.

.

A game of this polish getting 80's ? Seems crazy to me.

If it gets 90+ the Wii U will be the new gen console with most 90+ games this year.

There is a big lack of 90+ games on new gen systems this year. I only saw GTA V and Bayo 2.

By the way, about IGN, it's going to be "too much music" because we'll get 430+ :lol

It's a secret to everybody.
"I wasted way too much time in the My Music menu. Some days I'd sit down for a session, and not even get to play because I spent so much time deciding song percentages. 5.6/10."

Heheh, thread derailed in 3...2...1. It always happens with Smash lol.

I'll just say that both are (gonna be, in 4's case) really good for different reasons.

Ok, being serious, I can see some cons :
- not enough new stages
- missing a few modes like Adventure/Break the Target
- few stuff not available day one like custom stages sharing or online tournament.

My guess for the negatives
- New stages are lacking
- Amiibo integration is lacking
- Stage Builder is too basic
- Lack of online modes

Although I bet it will not be less than 88 because that is what Mario Kart 8 got. I am betting right on 90 honestly.

The last of us remastered. But that and Gta are old games.
Bayo 2 is the only 90+ new game on current gen.

No review can nor should critique the online today. Absolutely no online features are available yet. So any outlet mentioning online should be ignored.

I predict that none of these reviews will do anything to change my opinion about the game, except maaaybe make me more or less interested in stuff like Smash Tour.

Can you still what game modes are online?
I do not see an issue if they mention a negative that say "Smash Tour is local only".

I just thought of something...once the embargo is up, people with a review copy are allowed to talk about everything the game has to offer right? Doesn't that mean we may learn even more about the game that we possibly didn't know because of Nintendo's tendency to keep secrets? I think I'm more excited about that possibility than the review scores since no score will sway my decision to buy it lol

I've never understood threads like this. "I predict it will be a 9/10" - what does that even mean? Review scores are vague, meaningless digits.

Nope. Like the 3DS game, you first have to connect to the Nintendo servers & they aren't functional right now. So no one has seen the online game mode screen yet.

it means that they predict a review score of 9/10

it's pretty self explanatory, especially in the actual review thread

:)

The only things embargoed I think were
Flat Zone X and Pokémon Stadium 2 (Congo Jungle as well, whoops!).
People with the review copies pretty much told us everything about the game, which is how I learned that Amiibos do not work with Classic Mode or Events (Thanks JWitzz and Ash!)
Edit: As people said, embargoes for content discussion do not go away until release date.

Thanks for the clarity. I figured it may show you the menu but not allow you to connect. So your point is totally valid.

Not necessarily. Nintendo at times will restrict what reviewers can say about some content. For example the end game in Pokemon ORAS.

We are still restricted in what we can show or discuss.

Well that's exactly what I mean! Like how they cannot talk about the ORAS end game content, maybe there is something in Smash they can't mention either (like a stage or something) that will blow our minds!

It's all wishful thinking anyway. I'm just getting really excited for this Friday for both Smash and ORAS! :)

Well regardless, restrictions or not, we'll all have the opportunity to discover things for ourselves in 2 days! Can't believe we made it lol

We know all the Stages for Smash, someone posted the "All Stages Obtained!" message from Wii U.

There's 46 (not counting Miiverse), and nothing we didn't know of already. Congo Jungle 64, Pokemon Stadium 2, Pac-Land, Duck Hunt, Flat Zone X (a mix of 1 and 2), and Smashville are the only secret ones iirc.

Wishful thinking sure, but it got confirmed by a Chile Smasher that indeed we know all 46 stages. Embargo means nothing to those who bought a broken street date copy.

I'm predicting a Polygon 8/10 or lower, with cons being a lack of online options and single player content. Haha. IGN will give it a 9.8-10.

Overall I'm expecting a 90+ metacritic, though.

shouldn't we expect reviews after online multiplayer launches? i only bought this for online for glory, and if it's at least as good as the 3ds, i'll be happy.

anyway, penis

Docking points from a fighting game for having light single player content is exceptionally short-sighted.
But it will happen anyway.

Ah I see! Oh well, I'm good with what we got! Most of my buddies like Final Destination the most anyway so the whole Omega stage thing is perfect for us so I guess it doesn't really matter all that much :P
