Super Smash Bros Wii U Review Thread

It's not normal. Good to see a lot of sites holding off on their reviews.
Well to be fair they didn't hold off on the reviews, but rather the review score (and whatever they will have to say about online). But it's better then posting a 'finalized' review while not having played the full game.

Knock it out, brother. I don't give a damn about scores. What I'm highlighting is ridiculously nitpicky reviewers with criticisms that either don't even make sense or are not even an issue for a majority of the players.
But there was actually a ton of complaining when the final stage list was revealed. How isn't that a valid complaint?

Can you make a list of objectively valid complaints for us? Someone should have given that to the reviews before they played the game so they knew what to be bothered by.

Posting again for people jumping to pointless conclusions:
You keep using words like pointless and nitpicky which aren't appropriate in the context that you use them.

The step back on the stage builder is a little baffling even if it wasn't the most fleshed out thing in Brawl to begin with, but everything else seems fine enough.

Venture Beat: 98/100

When I’m playing Smash Bros. with my friends, nothing can be better. We scream, we argue, we laugh, and we never want to stop. The Wii U version is a fantastic addition to the series. The new modes are great, but the excellent mechanics and huge, varied roster make it potentially the best entry in the franchise yet.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the system’s best game yet, one of the best multiplayer experiences available, and one of Nintendo’s finest achievements.

Fuck, I can't wait for this Friday. It's going DOWN! Didn't play the 3DS version because I wanted the full experience. I can't believe the reason I bought a Wii U is finally here.

Yeah, I'm not sure why the Stage Builder gets so little attention. Maybe it's a lot more difficult to develop than is worth their time, but it seems like the kind of thing that could be truly amazing if it were fleshed out a bit more. The fact that it has less options than the Wii version is pretty sad to say the least. I appreciate it being in there in any form, but the GameXplain video review made it seem extremely limited.

Who are you to determine what is or is not an important issue

This thread is going places, I can feel it.

Nintendo review threads are unmatched

And maybe the positives for the reviewer don't add up past 9/10. If you feel, from the review, that it reads as "higher" than that score, well, then, great! Scores are not objective, and in the end are arbitrary and feelings-based. He feels it is a 9/10. It is a 9/10.

why are ign reviews late so called review in progress

I think it's usually due to online features, since they can either have problems at launch or can't be fully reviewed until everyone is online playing.

Hell, they can't even play Smash online until the 20th. I assume Nintendo did that so people who get the game before the street date aren't online for whatever reason.

Id be cool with websites having separate reviews for SP and MP.
I agree. Rate the game on a SP scale and then on a MP scale.
Like I do not play many games online. If I see CoD 8/10 does that means SP is a 7 and MP a 9?
If they want to hold off on an overall score, that is cool.
You can rate what you played so far though.

Wait, so you're saying that the those nitpicks shouldn't have affected the 1 point off a perfect score?
I think he's saying that if the person reading the review doesn't care about something being lackluster in the game (even if it's a major component of the game like stage variety), the reviewer has no right to say the game is simply not quite perfect, rather than perfect.

What is an objectively valid complaint?
Hey, don't ask me. Only GreyFox seems to know. Maybe there are none when it comes to Smash Bros?

The lack of new stages is not a nitpicky criticism. There are only 46 stages in total, and almost half of them are from previous games. To make matters worse, many of the new stages are ruined by unnecessary gimmicks that you cannot turn off unless you enjoy playing on Final Destination the entire time. I'd say that's a pretty valid complaint. If you disagree, then fine. Go write your own review.

I left the game because I couldn't find a single match without lag or problems, and it only happened on this game, not on the dozens of others that I have on the PS3/Wii U/PC/PS Vita.

The 3DSs dated hardware is susceptible to signal pollution, exceptionally so. It doesn't have good hardware on that front to begin with but it also doesn't have any real resources available to clean up the signal. You can see this with how blazingly slow the eShop is for doing anything that only requires the WiFi to send/receive data.

The fact that you lag so much, however, has to do with your connection. Either you have a lot of WiFi noise, or your signals not the best in the world from your router.

I agree with the first, but not with the second part. I played a lot of games on my notebook / Wii U / PS Vita and never had this many problems with disconnection/lag. This is the first time that I'm having a hard time playing online since I stopped using dial-up.

"Note that the online servers weren’t up prior to Super Smash Bros. Wii U’s release, so this review does not reflect that aspect of the game."

I have to agree with this disclaimer. Online performance will not be equal to everyone. And this is not an online only game. It's like scoring the last "Tomb Raider" offline experience based on the multiplayer part. That game was great and I never touched the mp. That didn't matter.

Smash Bros is a couch multiplayer game so I think that should be the part that they should focus on on the reviews.
