Maybe you're selecting with friends instead of random (Unless its with friends you want to play?).

No, I am actually selecting random. None of my friends have this game since it is the Japanese version. I thought it may be my wifi connection, but then I realized that I had no problems with spectator mode. Weird, to say the least.

Man, IGN has such shit compression
I know. They had some relatively good screens of Smash Bros. in the past with much less compression, but I think they got those from Nintendo themselves.

I have the same problem. I can do spectator mode (the betting part with coins) but not play online matches.

Sorry I haven't been paying much attention in the last few days, but is Dr. Mario in the game?

Hey Shaft, did you ever find out why? I never heard of such a thing.

It's the same way for pretty much anyone not in Japan. From IGN:

Speaking of which, we attempted to connect to several random battles against players in Japan and were never successful. It's possible that Nintendo is currently blocking US-based servers from participating in online games, although we have no proof – other than being repeatedly locked out of online matches – to support this theory. Interestingly enough, we could participate in a number of spectator matches, which enable you to watch other players duke it out. You can even bet on the matches before they begin using coins you've collected throughout your experiences.

Friend code matches work just fine though. I've played quite a few friend code matches with people on IRC.

My guess is spectator matches are not live matches but pre-recorded data from matches that happened earlier. Maybe only 5 minutes earlier or whatever but definitely not live.

anybody else get the new nintendo power, they reviewed brawl!! They scored it a perfect 10, as they should have.:D
Yeah its actually old news but still nice to know =D

The new screens may be horribly compressed, but I like how close up a lot of them are.

Green Hill and New Pork City are more detailed than I thought at first.

real men do all the challenges

I hate that thing of skipping some events with the golden hammer -_- when I get my brawl I'll leave those evilish things called "golden hammers" apart and Im going to finish everything by myself -o-

Samus' theme, Fortuna, and Space Armada are not in my Top 52. Incidentally, despite the Star Fox double loss, it still has the greatest number of songs for any one series in my Top 52. >_>

I wonder how much/if any DLC will be available for Brawl once Wii Ware really gets up and running. New characters would be nice, but I wouldn't hope for that just yet. Obviously making and balancing new characters is a lot of work and there is the question of how online would work if one system with the new character is playing one without. One thing I would like to see is themed level builder stuff. PO'd there's only one Fire Emblem stage? Make your own with themed background, level hazards and special tiles. How about blocks and platforms that look like houses and skyscrapers for a Mother themed level? Maybe a Starman or two as a level hazard?

Downloadable classic levels would be cool too, since remaking Saffron City is pretty much everyone's first priority with the level editor.
I agree with all of these things, plus more trophies (such as Marin), more alternate outfits (such as Marin), and more music (such as Ballad of the Wind Fish).

Sounds good! Unless it means there will be boys. I hate children.

Hey, anyone knows how to unlock Toon Link in SSE?

i unlocked him by beating SSE and then beating classic mode with link. i've seen reports out there saying that all you have to do is beat classic with link or gannondorf but that didn't work for me. i had to finish SSE and then my first play through of classic with link after that unlocked toon link.

can you make scrolling stages in the stage editor?

nope...unless it's some sort of unlockable feature that i haven't found yet. i'm not getting my hopes up, though.

Thanks for the valuable info SpeedRazor. While it sucks that Nintendo would do such a thing, I take comfort in knowing that it isn't my system or connection.

I don't think so u_u If the stages were scrollable the amount of space in the Hard Disk required would be bigger and It would be more difficult to send those stages via Connect24 =(

It's like trying to send, for example, 3 stages at the same time ( considering that the whole stage could change into 3 different stages )

I know this prob has already been asked a million times, but for anybody who has a quick answer, Is there still wave-dashing/landing, L canceling, and such techniques still in the game?
