Superman has renounced his US citizenship, and for a character long-known for "truth, justice, and the American way," that's big news.

Though DC's promotion of this week's 96-page Action Comics #900 centered around the main story — the conclusion of the year-long "Black Ring" saga starring Lex Luthor — it was a back-up written by David S. Goyer and illustrated by Miguel Sepulveda that's making headlines.

In the story, Superman is scolded by a member of the president's security staff for appearing at a protest in Iran, with the notion that Superman's actions reflect the positions of US government as a whole. As a result, Superman chooses to renounce his US citizenship, rather than have his deeds be construed as a statement of any one entity's policies.

Superman renounces his U.S. citizenship in Action Comics' record-breaking 900th issue. But that's not all the benevolent alien refugee does in the sprawling special issue, which hits stores Wednesday.

The Man of Steel throws down in outer space against a continually misguided Lex Luthor, who's finally rewarded for his boundless ambition by becoming a petulant god. Supes also throws a pizza party with Lois Lane for his Kryptonian pals, who crowd his couch while chowing grub and chewing scenery. He talks cosmology and philosophy with an interstellar deity beset by guilt over civilizations he was perhaps too selfish to save, and goes head-to-head with a one-time pro athlete who's become a superheroic show-off

The problem isn't so much the medium as the message it's carrying. Wonder Woman doesn't wear a costume based on the US flag any more. Captain America isn't being referred to as Captain America overseas, and now Superman gives up his US citizenship. The entire impression is that being American is somehow a stigma to be avoided.

Oh, well. At least we still have Batman.

So I read this issue. I don't generally read superhero comics but I was kind of curious about it.

There are 4 supermen, two of them are robots. Lex Luthor is a god. Lois Lane is a faceless robot. Superman had a son who sacrificed himself to save some planet that ended up exploding anyway. Lex Luthor somehow radiates pure happiness to the world. Death of the Endless shows up. wtf.

I don't know if this is still happening, but last I read, the Captain America movie will just be called "The First Avenger" in other countries, as opposed to "Captain America".

I'm not sure if this has changed since or not.
