Supplemental game modes that are better than the campaign mode?

Catherine's Babel Mode, versus the story levels.

And when I say "more fun" I mean one is for men and the other is for babies.

Bloody Palace in the DMC games instantly springs to mind.

More fun that the main campaign, cause the game gets boiled down to what it excells at. the combat engine.

City Trial was easily the best part about Kirby's Air Ride. Searching out the best ride machines, collecting powerups for your ride, and dealing with the special events in an open city was so much fun.

Coin Rush in New Super Mario Bros 2 is fantastic, especially some of the DLC levels.

Unfortunately, its amazingness is violently undercut by a lack of leaderboards, or even proper personal per-stage high score tracking.

Mario Kart Battle Mode is usually more fun in a group than the main Grand Prix mode.

This was true pre Double Dash. Multi player battle mode sucks ever since. Okay Mario Kart DS was not too bad.

Going back to the topic Vanquish Challenge mode is superior to Story Mode in every aspect.

I would have bought it as a stand alone game...

Vanquish Tactical Challenges:

Holy high octane insanity, these things were INCREDIBLE. Tactical challenge 4 alone took me longer to finis than the campaign twice over, and 6 was just an insane ordeal of blood, sweat and tension. These things are probably some of the most heart pounding challenge missions in ANY game I've ever played.

Oh yes. I absolutely loved that mode. Shame about the 30,000 coin limit and a big shame about the lack of leaderboards (also a kind of shame about re-spawning enemies for repeated koopa-stair antics, but the time limit kinda makes that ok). I played the Nerve Wrack Pack alone more than the main game and I didn't tire of it. Was pretty proud of my score of 23,588 on that one, but KMD from here beat it with 23,856. It was fun sharing strategies.

I hope they include similar modes in future Mario games. With leaderboards. NSMBU's challenges were a step in the right direction for me.Still missing leaderboards though.
