Supreme Court - NC Districts Relied on Race When Drawing Districts

NC GOP stay winning.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday affirmed a lower court's ruling that North Carolina's state lawmakers illegally relied too much on the race of voters when they drew 28 state House and state Senate districts in 2011.

If I follow correctly, this differs from last months decision in that this covers all the rest of the districts, not just the 1st and 2nd. Only bad news:

But the justices rejected the court's order to redraw the districts and hold a special election.

The action by the justices Monday sends the matter back to the lower court, which could order new districts in time for the regular cycle of elections in 2018.

Still, given the lower court ruled against the NC GOP initially, I feel good about the odds of them ordering a special election.

Court's Opinion here.

"Relied too much on the race of voters"? Just how much is acceptable?
Well, under the VRA you are legally required to take race into account in terms of giving minorities the ability to elect legislators of their choice.

Relying on demographics to an extent is useful since it helps make sure everyone is represented. If every district in a state was drawn to have identical demographics, the likelihood is that one party would rule the entire state completely

Well, if you're cropping out the areas with black people in them and making sure you get the lines around the areas with white people in them, then it's unacceptable.

That is literally what they tried to do.
