I don't understand why the crowd and everyone was so damn shocked? She's just relatively unattractive, why would people assume that she can't sing???? They way they were reacting you would think a mentally handicapped person had just gotten their Phd.

It's all good and all, but I absolutely hate the way it's produced. It's like watching a really cheesy "person overcoming adversity against all odds" movie, compressed into 3-4 mins or whatever, and it being played over and over again with a different person.

yeah, and it works.... people am cry over this.

She has a good singing voice, so good for her, but jesus, everybody in this show (participants included) are hypocrits. Everyone is expecting to have a good laugh at her, everybody is against her (they even say this), but when it turns out she can sing (one superficial talent) everybody loves her. If she did put out a bad performance evreybody would just laugh at her, make her feel horrible and mock her.

I now know why I don't watch absolute drivel like this.
God, that is one ignorant post you made. How in the world is pure talent considered superficial? How many talents do YOU own that you would not deem superficial? By the way, you have a singer for an avatar? How's the hypocrite now?

And be honest, would you really think she can sing that good when you passed her on the streets?

I like that british hottie there in the middle. Sooooo hot. You should've seen her cry when some 4 year old girl sang 'over the rainbow.'

And staged or no, it's a fun-to-watch production because it challenges our expectations. This certainly doesn't top Paul "Yangus" Potts, though.

She is very hot.

And I would love it for someone like Susan Boyle to win the entire competition, get a record contract, and become popular among the younger generation. But I sincerely doubt it will ever happen.

Prove me wrong, GB.

My question is more how does Simon get from England to the US every week to do both of these shows; how can you possibly live doing 2x 20 hour flights every week o_O

PRO TIP: The BGT auditions are not recorded live; as with the American Idol auditions this stuff was probably recorded ages ago. I think Cowell staggers his schedule so the live shows don't clash but yeah there's still a lot of insane traveling when you're judging three shows (don't forget The X-Factor) on both sides of the Atlantic, which is why he's been talking about quitting Idol after his contract is up next year. Or more likely he knows that Idol is fucked if he quits (seriously, it's hard to imagine the show without him, unlike any of the other utterly disposable judges) so he's playing games to frighten Fox in advance of renegotiating his contract. :D

That looks so staged to me.

So was this staged or not?

I find it hard to believe that anything is genuine on these fucking "reality" shows.

It kind of is. The judges might not have heard them but all the contestants are pre-screened. Any of the ridiculously awful ones you see on shows like American Idol have already gone through an audition to even make it to the aired auditions.

A bunch of bitter douchebags on GAF, no way!

According to people who have been on the show, the staged part of the show is where the producers play up/embellish contestants back stories to create a bigger awww factor. Like Susan being a virgin who's never kissed and lives with her cat just like a good portion of GAF. The judges and audience have not heard/seen the contestants until they perform.

I know that it's great that she can sing and is talented, but how sad is it that the media made it so incredibly surprising that someone who is not 'mainstream good looking' can actually have talent.

So she'd be good looking somewhere?

I don't quite understand all the people saying it's staged. It's a TV show. A production crew didn't bump into each other in the mall and just decide to ambush a random person walking by.

I mean what was your first clue it was staged? The stage?

But unless they found a hot singer 9 months prior and put her on the Charlize Theron Monster diet, I don't think it matters.

Yup, I expected it as soon as she walked on and looking the judges reactions from there up to her singing.
They film the judges on seperate cameras and while editing they'll add more camera shots for a more effective feel of awkwardness. It's just the fact that they overused the shots make it looked stage, especially since you know that she's not going to suck and "pwn" the show

The expressions were staged. The reaction of the judges.

I feel like the judges had already heard her sing...and it really wasn't a shock to them...
Their expressions don't seem genuine as if they heard her for the first time..

Also her introduction...she seemed as if she was trying to give off the expression that she's one of those that will make a fool of herself...and then did a 360 and blew everyone away..

This kind of shit is awful. Wow, someone who acts weird and is not attractive can sing well. Are we so warped by marketing and hollywood that it's honestly a surprise that someone who doesn't have a tv face is talented enough to do what beautiful+talented people on tv do?

Someone that auditioned for a talent tv show is talented. WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT?

Well... yeah. Look who gets the votes on the shows? It's mainly why I refuse to watch this horseshit.

Jesus Christ everyone who sings and is popular today is beautiful. My cousin Julie Reeves quit the music business because of the ridiculous standards she was held to on physical appearance. And knock knock.. Julie really isn't that great of a singer. It's all manufactured tripe and we are feeding it by voting for it.

In any case, Susan's performance of Cry Me A River is wonderful.

Exactly.

Here is a FINE, intelligent take on it.

Anyone watch tonights show? That last kid has just but to bed any doubts of this show being at least somewhat staged. No WAY can it be a coincidence that Simon tells the kid to stop singing the song he chose, and he just so happens to have a backup all ready (which was a million times better). Kid was awesome, but it just felt far too scripted for TV

Agreed. Probably the most obviously staged thing Ive seen on one of these shows. Granted I dont watch them that often but fucking hell give the audience some credit. Simon stops this kid singing in mid song and tells him to sing something else which they just happen to have on standby and which the kid completely knocks outta the park. Fair enough the kid has a hell of a voice but dont pretend the whole thing wasnt scripted.

I'm conflicted here, because on one hand they're clearly pandering this saccharine fairy tale to their audience when they are part of the reason that people think appearance has something to do with talent. I'm sure they screen a lot of Susan Boyles, especially for American Idol. I'm positive that this happens in the music industry as well.

On the other hand, a previously unknown talented singer is finally going to get the recognition she deserves. So kudos for her. I just wish people would stop and ask themselves why this doesn't happen more often. It's certainly not because you have to be young and attractive to sing well.

Yeah, it's all staged and scripted. The panel are all in on it. Amanda Holden is an actress. She can turn on the waterworks at the drop of a hat. That's not genuine emotion.

These shows are to the talent contest what pro wrestling is to sports.

We can now all be smarks.

I should really keep up to date with this, one of my friends on Facebook has his profile picture of him on the front of the local paper with the text 'Cargill has Talent', and I thought it was a photoshop. Turns out a friend in my year group is in the final 30? Whoops?

I was in the same class as a guy from One True Voice, the terrible pop band that were crushed by the sexy might of Girls Aloud.

Also, did somebody just call Amanda Holden hot?

There are jokes begging to me made. It is taking a lot of self control to resist.

I thought it was going to do a Hullholland Drive, and she was going to just close her mouth and had been miming all along. That was great. And Amanda Holden is still hot.
