You remove it to access the hard drive bay.
But Nintendo.

Those designs are way too gaudy. They need to be more inline with these:

Can you not access the hard drive bay without a custom face plate? I don't get your point.

I didn't think I had to break down the distinction all the way. The failure of faceplates for the 360 was Microsoft needing to continue to justify it as a feature they designed into the console itself as it ate up production costs otherwise. The 360 faceplates were purely cosmetic existing only to be replaced with other faceplates. It's not a feature they could have slowly only pushed at their leisure like a cellphone company would be pushing out cases.
The PS4 faceplates exist to be removed. It doesn't matter whether they push out new ones for customization's sake. It's a niche they can much more safely pursue because they can always default back to not making any whatsoever.

Shit, I ALMOST didn't notice it, it was that subtle. Nice work.Made a mockup instead as I can't find the post.

So you're saying because Microsoft advertised the 360 faceplates prior to launch that they were requried to spend money on producing and selling them? Just because Sony has a softer or more limited launch related to these doesn't mean they are not experiencing the same costs. I mean I don't know how you can say this isn't purely cosmetic for Sony, considering most casual gamers wouldn't even know you could remove this section from the casing. This isn't a functional accessory by any means, and is why I think it will fail/not be supported outside of a few collector's items.
No, that's not what I'm saying, and you're still not understanding the distinction.
360 faceplates exist to be removed. They serve no other function. PS4 faceplates would be a removable piece of the console regardless of whether they were ever intended to be used for customization.
The 360 faceplates being able to be swappable added costs to the console. They needed to justify those costs by pushing them more and more as a product. It had to sell as a product so they needed to actively push them.
PS4 faceplates can be made as to whatever extent Sony wants. If any of these initial ones don't sell, then they can choose not to make any more but the onus isn't on the product itself to justify its existence. They've allowed themselves an out because at worst, the faceplates will continue to be a removable piece of the console.

Dayum, the role reversal between MS and Sony is really something xD
I would want a PS2-style grill like some gafferposted the other day.

Does this mean no console redesign in the near future or am I reading too much into it?
