Swapple PS4 face plates announced

I hope we see more support for this and they dont go the way of the Gold Headset faceplates. I was really hoping for some cool customization options there but we got what....3 faceplates? And they cost a lot.

You remove it to access the hard drive bay.

Can you not access the hard drive bay without a custom face plate? I don't get your point.

But Nintendo.

I think these will fail too. But stuff like this actually makes more sense for a portable system which can be seen as a fashion statemen (think cell phone cover)

Portables (and cellphones) probably do this better because, well, people see them. And they're yours, they're personal.

Consoles are generally, at best, only displayed when people come into your game space. And they're also designed with an aesthetic that is meant to blend in to entertainment centers, not stand out. So these big, graphic faceplates are really jarring.

This thread scream of "b-b-b-but I dont want my electronic toy to look like a electronic toy".

Fuck outta here with that minimalist nonsense. Those MGS covers are crap. Im not slightest bit afraid of having a bit of colour on my console. Hopefully I can get a good marvel one done to match my fightstick.

I didn't think I had to break down the distinction all the way. The failure of faceplates for the 360 was Microsoft needing to continue to justify it as a feature they designed into the console itself as it ate up production costs otherwise. The 360 faceplates were purely cosmetic existing only to be replaced with other faceplates. It's not a feature they could have slowly only pushed at their leisure like a cellphone company would be pushing out cases.

The PS4 faceplates exist to be removed. It doesn't matter whether they push out new ones for customization's sake. It's a niche they can much more safely pursue because they can always default back to not making any whatsoever.

So you're saying because Microsoft advertised the 360 faceplates prior to launch that they were requried to spend money on producing and selling them? Just because Sony has a softer or more limited launch related to these doesn't mean they are not experiencing the same costs. I mean I don't know how you can say this isn't purely cosmetic for Sony, considering most casual gamers wouldn't even know you could remove this section from the casing. This isn't a functional accessory by any means, and is why I think it will fail/not be supported outside of a few collector's items.

No, that's not what I'm saying, and you're still not understanding the distinction.

360 faceplates exist to be removed. They serve no other function. PS4 faceplates would be a removable piece of the console regardless of whether they were ever intended to be used for customization.

The 360 faceplates being able to be swappable added costs to the console. They needed to justify those costs by pushing them more and more as a product. It had to sell as a product so they needed to actively push them.

PS4 faceplates can be made as to whatever extent Sony wants. If any of these initial ones don't sell, then they can choose not to make any more but the onus isn't on the product itself to justify its existence. They've allowed themselves an out because at worst, the faceplates will continue to be a removable piece of the console.

You honestly think the swapable faceplates had any significant impact to the hardware cost of the 360?

And frankly I don't care if Sony has an out or not to support these things, my original comment was the market won't react to these because no one gives a shit by proof of the 360. I believe people getting excited for possibilities here is pointless because regardless of whether "Sony does or doesn't have to justify" their existence, the market won't buy in and the product will fade away quicker than it did for Microsoft.

Does this mean no console redesign in the near future or am I reading too much into it?

Might be reading into it too much. The original 360 had Faceplates and got a redesign. And considering how mnay times the PS3 got a redesign, I'm sure the PS4 will get redesigned eventually.

Read this as "Swapple [?] PS4 face pilates announced"...

Clicked into the thread, and then it made sense.

Edit: I'd like a plain one in black matte finish please :)

I wouldn't have thought I'd want one of these but those matte and ps2 one's would definitely change that.

Day zero etc etc
