Such arbitrary dimensions, where and how did they come up with it? So many theories about appeasing retailers and wasting plastic. The truth was in front of our eyes all along.

If you look inside the box the Switch ships in there's actually a place for a Switch game case underneath where the Switch itself goes, IIRC. That might have something to do with it.

So they could've packed in two switches in the box ,but Nintendo skimped out last minute.
Already prepared for bundles I see.
Still astounded at how small the system is

I'm inclined to agree, but who knows. Maybe not.We all know future bundles will likely be digital only even if there is space in the box.
In other news, apparently even my own mother is more observant than r/NintendoSwitch.
I don't know, with the limited internal storage it might not be the nest idea to clog it up with a digital pack-in game (depending on the size of the game). We all know future bundles will likely be digital only even if there is space in the box.

No, smaller. Are Switch cases the same size as DVD or BD cases?

This is some cloud/bush level stuff, holy shit

smaller and slimmer than PSP cases.

The goal was to probably meet halfway between Wii U and 3DS boxes. Nintendo handheld boxes have traditionally been the same format for a looooong time so breaking out of that was probably important.I am surprised that they chose relatively enormous cases compared to the size of the cartridge, they could make the current ones half their size and fit two of them in the space of a current box although the current ones make for potentially better artwork and are more noticeable although they should cost more to ship.

Wow, this got a picture and a thread (here and reddit)!? I thought it was obvious, and it tickled my sense of neatness.

The red flag on game cases still amazes me for some reason. What a neat idea.

Takamoto:
Well, as you said, one of the most striking aspects of Wii is its small size. Our specific target in developing this console was to make it no larger than 2 or 3 stacked DVD cases. Of course, this was a direct order from you! (laughs)
Iwata:
I actually stacked up a few DVD cases and said, "I'd like to make it about this size!" (laughs) I guess this must have come as a shock to you?

Ducktaped Switches.
It should be 1/3d of the size or even 1/4th! How big are the Vita cases again in comparison?
