Switch kickstand doesn't stay shut

I received my Switch this morning and immediately noticed the kickstand doesn't latch shut. I have tried many times, carefully trying to get it into the correct place but any movement of the console (e.g. picking it up) and the kickstand falls open.

I wondered if anyone else had a similar issue?

I got the neon colour which now seems to be out of stock everywhere. I am worried that, if I play Zelda in the meantime, when I can eventually get a replacement I won't be able to move the save over.

I've contacted Nintendo UK support to see if they can repair/replace and if they can move the saves if it needs a new console.

Edit (additional info)

Hopefully it's possible to get a new kickstand and attach that to the console without needed to exchange the whole thing.

It's not a huge impact on usage when I'm holding it in handheld mode my fingers naturally sit under the unit where the kickstand is so that holds it in place. It's just a bit annoying that it swings open when picking it up (e.g. taking out of case / out of the dock).

Aren't the kickstands detachable? If the problem is the kickstand and not whatever it attaches to to the console, it might be easy order it from/replaced by Nintendo online without sending in the Switch.

Mine is pretty loose, which is somewhat concerning when you've got people who have trouble with getting it to come out, but it does stay in place so I guess I'm good for now.

They're supposed to be detachable though. Shouldn't be a tough replacement if needed, and you might want to try detaching it to see what's up anyway?

My volume down button doesn't work, feelsloudman.

Thats not a good start, add these to the list....
that poor person who has a left joy con which doesn't even register so the system can't even start up.

That Nintendo Quality... Quite a few day 1 reports on the finish of the Switch, sadly.

Uhh now i'm concerned..all reports were saying how quality the device feels and well put together..

No need to worry I hope.

Remember the Xbox one launch? A couple units chewed the disc, neogaf lost its mind, but turned out not to be a widespread issue.

Hopefully this is just a couple of units.

Sorry for the people who have issues, hopefully doesn't take the shine off your excitement.

Yeah, I have the same problem, it just doesn't lock properly and randomly opens when I hold my Switch in my hands.

Silly. Nintendo have consistently made the most reliable console hardware for over thirty years now.

They've struggled with portable QC though.
I bet the QC is fine, a couple of gaffers getting duds isn't something to be worried about.

Sure the people that have issues with their unit will be the vocal minority...

However, every issue is one too many. There aren't too much units going around to be exchanged if you haven't noticed.

Let me know when the rubber starts peeling off the thumbsticks and your account and credit card details are compromised.

Maybe not where you are. I'm the UK, seems to be plenty here ;p

Like what it's even the point of a console wars post like this?

What do you think it will achieve? Has OP mentioned anything about getting another console or whatever? No. So WTF?

Yea i read that and gauffed. So freaking defensive.

I mean I'll be honest here, in my case it hasn't been a problem so far, and I'm having no other issues if you can call the stand thing one. But it is concerning how people are experiencing these completely different things with the stand imo

I mean I don't know what it's supposed to feel like. Maybe loose without coming out is the way it's supposed to be

I understand how you could take it that way. To add context, I only have a PS4 and I am not trying to start a console war discussion. I was trying to point out that launch issues are common, so Nintendo fans shouldn't feel particularly let down. The pains of early adoption are near universal.

Wars are serious business.

Well seems like initial reports about concerns of the kickstand might be warranted.

Nintendo's home consoles have been rock solid. Nintendo's handhelds have had some QC issues (DS Lite hinge, 3DS screen scuffs when closed, etc.).

Therefore Switch will remain in a quantum state of broken/not-broken until you buy one and collapse the wave function.

This does feel like perhaps their most rushed launch ever though. System software clearly isn't done, neither is their online service, etc.

I've been messing with mine because of the topic and while I absolutely would prefer mine to feel a bit tighter I haven't been able to get mine to pop out out of its own or anything. So I don't think I actually have an issue

I had this too, it's a bit stuck, but try a few times and it pops out like it should :)

Yeah, I'd imagine the stuck kickstand thing being an easier fix. I really don't think you should be too afraid of breaking it either with it being removable and all that.

Can't think of much you can do with your kickstand to tighten it though, but I guess removing it won't hurt.

Keep in mind that the kickstand also serves as a cover for the microSD slot.

I rather it be stuck than loose. I dont see myself using it anyways.

Yeah. Although it sucks if you want to put a microSD in. But now that I put it in I feel that if it will open like this too often I might as well glue it in. It's a bit annoying.

And the PS4 could apparently brick itself because of an hdmi issue

They're supposed to be detachable though. Shouldn't be a tough replacement if needed, and you might want to try detaching it to see what's up anyway?

Oh that's a good idea, if they can send me a new kickstand to attach to the console that would be wonderful. I have seen people detach and reattach it in videos.

In all the coverage I saw prior to launch the kickstand had a firm snap shut. Hopefully it's just a few people who have the problem. I only made the thread as I hadn't seen it mentioned anywhere before.

As for the rest of the console, everything seems fine apart from one of the joy-con straps being quite hard to remove after attaching to the right joy-con. I didn't try again after getting it off as I didn't want it to be stuck again. I know they have lock toggles on them but the strap was unlocked.

I am very happy with it overall, the size, speed etc are great - and there's Zelda!

Edit (re: joy-con straps)

I've tried again with the straps in all combinations (each joy-con with each strap) and have resolved the issue with that. I think one of the straps must have been stiff as it took 3 or 4 goes with that one to get it to go on/off easily. The other strap worked fine first time so I think it was specific to that one strap, not the joy-con.

There are only so many active gaffers and only a percentage of those bought a Switch.

? Guess you missed the point of my post ?
Being paranoid doesn't make any sense. There is always a chance you get a bad one, but there isn't any evidence so far that there is some kind of massive amount of hardware fails.

but that's a feature 8)

This actually makes perfect sense. You have to observe your Switch as a console to get a non-defective one.

This is true, and it's making me worry. With mine it is staying covered though... I think I'm good. :/

Oh, the joy-con straps are a pain here too. But I'm hearing that's just kind of how they are. I think that's okay?

But yeah, I hope you can get it solved with a replacement kickstand if needed. That'd be the ideal replacement scenario for sure.

Before pressing it back into the console, try pushing the stand towards the top of the console while locking it in again.

Mine is also very loose, but if I do this it actually does snap back in and stay there.

I got your point, and my point is wait and see, since the problems reports seem to be plenty for a relatively low key launch.
