Switch will not have an Internet browser (at least at launch)

Early access device pretty much. The only reason they could launch is because of Zelda. When used as a portable, it would be nice to use it as a portable media device sometimes but nope, it comes with nothing.

This is a huge dissapointment.

I have never used the brower on traditional consoles but a portable-tablet one should absolutely have one.How can they be so incompetent for such things is beyond my understading

Yeah its going to be great when I'm out of the house on work trips and not being able to log into the hotels wifi because I lack a browser.

This post made me go from "Eh, I have no use for a clunky console browser anyway" to "Oh god Nintendo what are you doing?! You NEED the browser!"

Hotels need to cut it out with the bullshit "go to the webpage to log on" thing. Missed the last Splatfest because of that garbage.

This is one thi g that doesn't bother me. Why even have browsers on consoles? They are slow and cumbersome. If I need to look something up while playing, I'll just grab my phone that's sitting next to me. It's faster and more user friendly.

Yeah... The evidence of Switch being fairly barebones at launch is definitely adding up. Doesn't matter much to me personally, but I can see why it would deter some potential buyers. Buying consoles on day one isn't always pretty, but this seems especially rough.

They... They have information about the UI and the Switch's features on the website.

Could I have used the browser on my switch on the train, bus or commute to work?
I'm posting from an iPhone 6s Plus, I'm streaming TV to my smart TV - I have an iMac not 20ft away and 2 iPads and a MacBook Pro.
Most people have some combination of devices with browsers on at their disposal - why have another one?

What people are forgetting is Nintendo have not once declared the Switch to be anything other than a gaming device.
Not one single time.

Well put. And it's not like there won't ever be a browser, I'm sure they're just making sure it's airtight so the Switch isn't hacked day one.

Lets face it on March third Switch will be the Zelda machine and nothing more.
And the great thing is that i'm ok with that and i cannot wait

There has never been a browser on a console or handheld that was better than digging out a phone or tablet instead. It'll probably come eventually, but I seriously don't care. I remember thinking it was cool that Vita has one but... Never use it.

But the Switch is a tablet.

You don't need a user accessable web browser to share content to Facebook or Twitter (or to log into public networks for that matter).
How am i gonna see what people posted to my share/edit profile etc? There is no facebook app afaik and no browser.

I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make here...

Plopping down $350+ for a single game is something I will never understand.

I bought an Xbox One without any specific game that I "wanted" on day one. I bought a PS4 and only had Resogun for the first few months.

Some people (like myself) just like to be early adopters

This sucks for people that travel a lot (such as I do for work). Most hotels make you log in to the wifi through a browser. This worked for getting PS Vita/3DS online. No browser = no wifi at hotels. Bummer.

I understand that having a web browser is useful to some people, but I personally would rather they put those developments resources into pure game experiences and making the UI as clean and efficient as possible.

This thing is basically releasing six months early simply because the hardware is ready. Ugh.

Game development studios don't handle UI and system software.

And this is why the people thinking that mainstream consumers are going to pick this up when they already have smaller, feature rich multimedia smartphones in their pockets are in for a shock. There are far better devices in both markets the Switch is competing in.

Considering the disaster that was the Wii U, you would have thought Nintendo would nail their next console put of the gate but...yikes.

I like to joke around and while this does not bother me at all, I understand that it might bother some people, like really bother them because they wanted to use a browser with the Switch (at least on launch), not the people that just like to talk crap and wouldn't even consider buying a Switch even if it had all the features in the World.

Nintendo should release with a browser for those people, but is it really that incomprehensible that a lot of people just don't give a shit about this kind of stuff and just want a Switch to play games? Like, for real? Everyone that says it doesn't matter has to be a mindless fanboy or just stupid in general? Ffs.

I can count the number of times I've used the browser in my wiiu with one hand.

In my ps4 maybe two hands. Maybe.

Dont give a fuck about browsers on consoles to be honest, although I can understand some people may have used them. I just find them too buggy and umconfortable to navigate

On the one hand, console-based browsers are a somewhat pointless and almost always half-baked feature given the ubiquity of devices more dedicated to browsing. I would bet usage rates have almost always been quite low.

On the other hand, they have become a standard feature and it's a bit odd to see it missing from the first console where a browser seemed like an obvious and useful inclusion in light of the tablet interface. Even more so given the quality of the Wii U's browser.

All in all, it's a wash for me. I don't really care if it comes late, or not, or whatever.

The Switch is basically Shrodinger's game console. It's not a tablet, but it is. It's not a home console, but it's not a portable either. But it's also all of the above.

Really, the true meaning of the Switch is somewhere in our hearts, we get to decide what it is.

In reality it's Nintendo that decides what it is by how they support it. And so far they have shown me that it isn't much of anything.

A big Nintendo wifi partner McDonald's does this too. That's a valid concern but I'm sure they have a solution in the works.

I understand not using a web browser on Switch although the Wii U one was really dope and I think that having to get another device out of the pocket to do this basic task is not very convenient, but let's say it's not that big in the end.

But if you can't connect to most public hotspots that require browser authentification because of this, it's a damn big inconvenient as portable.

How did the 3DS handle this when it launched? I don't believe it had a web browser at launch either.

I definitely agree though that this is the bigger issue here.

Maybe we need to see the console for what it is, instead of trying to put it in an existing category and being (faux) outraged that it doesn't exactly fit that mold. Currently it's primarily for playing games, not for browsing. Don't buy one if that doesn't appeal to you and wait and see if they add it later I suppose?

I'm really unable to differentiate sarcasm from real comments on this thread, lol.

Sometimes using the browser on a console is useful, shame it won't be supported at launch.

Screenshots to Facebook and Twitter? Horf. I need image hosting sites, or at the very least internal storage to PC.

Still excited for BotW but gosh everything about Switch is barebones.

That's because you're thinking of it as a console and not as a portable device that is basically a tablet. With the capacitive touchscreen, it could be the same browsing experience as an iPhone or iPad.

Couldn't they still have some barebones coded browser for stuff like WiFi logins while not actually having a full featured useable browser?

The fact that the ability to share screenshots on FB and Twitter appears to be built in makes me believe there might be some sort of background web functionality which could take care of that. There's no way they actually wouldn't let you connect to wifi in a public airport like in the reveal trailer, right?

This is definitely a loss. The Vita browser has saved my ass more times than I can count when my phone battery was dead or I was travelling abroad. Like, it's literally saved me from starving to death.

Wow, even the 3DS and Vita have web browsers :l. I would this isn't a big deal.....but considering how lacking the launch line-up is, it would have been nice to use a web-browser in between playing Zelda.

At this point, the Switch is only worth getting at launch if you really want a portable 3D Zelda game or finally play a new Bomberman game. Otherwise it's best waiting to pick one up at least until MK8 Deluxe releases.

Coming in hot, with that said I hope that when they get around to it (hopefully not too long from now) that it's as good or better than the WiiU's browser. It's fucking great.

People complaining about the lack of a web browser on the Switch: Realistically, how often do you use your game consoles to browse web pages? Not taking about loading up Twitch, YouTube, Beam, or any other streaming service, but actual web pages. I'm super curious here.
