Switch will not have an Internet browser (at least at launch)

Not if you're interested in games, it's not.

It's like when parents got those shitty 30 in 1 handhelds for kids that had asked for a GameBoy.
Times have changed. Parents know there are thousands of free games on the devices they already own and know. Kids know there are thousands of free games on the devices they already know. What you're describing is a parent that is willing to pay 400 at launch for a tablet-like device that doesn't offer any tablet functionality and that also asks for 60 per game. That's A LOT. You're overestimating people's interest in high quality games in that segment greatly.

I don't know about you guys, but this is an absolute deal breaker.

Why do they even try? They might as well go third party. I mean a console, launching without standard features!? Unheard of! Unprecedented!

You are aware that the Switch library will do nothing but grow from March 3rd onward, right?

Sure, if you're not that into Zelda then there's not much to play on day one, but Timmy and Andy's Mom/Dad are not the people buying this at launch.
Sure, but when the library grows of MP games and no way to use them outside your house...

This could be a great play MH in public with others but no, you can't.
Because I want to talk normally about video games, but sadly Nintendo threads rapidly get over run with trolls. It's honestly hard to make head or tail of who is on the wind up and who has a genuine concern.
Damage control?

I'm buying the Switch and even if this it's a low priority issue for me, I can acknowledge that this is a huge problem for those who use Wifi Hotspots (Hint: They can't connect to wifi w/o the browser).

They're advertising portable mode in their ads, so how are people going to connect to public Wifi?

Well, we still know practically nothing about the system and OS. Maybe they found a workaround that would enable the Switch to connect to hotspots.

So the wifi hotspot authentication argument could all be a non-issue?

What currently happens with a 3DS or Vita? Do they pop up with an HTML sheet for logging in?

yeah it could be. i hope it is.

Vita pops a selector dialog for the actual access point, but i think you need to try and navigate to a page in the browser before it re directs you to login. this caught me a few times when i tried to do a non-web-thing first (mail, netflix etc)

Man...People are so quick to claim anyone who criticizes Nintendo doesn't like them. Have you stepped outside a non-Nintendo thread and seen how people criticize other companies? It's going to surprise you.

Other companies don't get near the criticism and hypocrisy like Nintendo does. Don't even bring that in here. Why don't you wait and see how the online works? None of us work at Nintendo to have all the answers.

You know that you don't have to enter in every thread, don't you? If it's a subject that has no importance to you, you can just ignore it and focus on the subjects that matter to you.

I'm Switch sceptic, but I can't think of a single situation where I'd use a console browser, nor have I ever done it. Sounds completely pointless when it's easier to check your phone but who knows. I think the console got many problems aside from that.

Only Nintendo bring out this level of faux outrage. It's hilarious and yet embarrassing at the same time.

I guarantee that if any other system from someone else launched without a web browser that no one would bat an eye lid.

I'm sure one will come at a later date and it's just a case of them focusing on getting other more important things right first.

In the meantime, I'm sure people will use their phone, tablet, laptop, PC or other games console to connect to the internet.

And they can use those other devices to play games on. Why buy a switch? They can even play nintendo games on their phone.

it does seem silly though, the system being a tablet-like device but lacking basic tablet features isn't great regardless on how often you used them.

It does make me think that maybe they should have delayed the launch until later in the year when the line up was better and the features were ready.

Other companies don't live in a bubble. They're aware of what other devices consumers are using and don't use them as a crutch for theirs.

Ha! Someone still thinks mobile doesn't have any games.

I never said that, plz stop making shit up.

I currently have 8 games installed on my phone. I am aware that there are a million mobile games out there but I also think the great majority of them are of inferior quality and do not appeal to me.

Someone needs to make a "Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot. I'm not sure if you know anything about Japanese culture, I'm an expert, but....." parody thread about this.

Lol Nintendo but odds are if I'm using a Switch, I'll be less than 5 seconds away from a web browser anyway so it's not like it's a big deal.

I'd assume this is more to stop potential vulnerabilities than anything else.

besides the fact that you obviously haven't read the thread - who's bringing the outrage, again? check a mirror buddy.

I have checked thanks. There are people in the thread complaining about the lack of browser at launch and the same people have said in other threads previously they have no interest in Switch.

I just find that rather strange.

I have no interest in Xbox One, so I wouldn't go into an Xbox thread and start complaining about the Xbox missing a feature. You know why? Because that would be weird as hell.

So you go into a topic about a non existent web browser?

If it was a only stationary console, it wouldn't be nearly the same issue.

It's not however.

It's the second time you say this. Can you point out who those people are?

Awful awful argument.

Switch isn't a 3G or 4G device like a phone is. It's primary a games console and it's main purpose is not phone calls, text messages or web browsing.

Good luck playing Breath of the Wild on an iphone by the way.

I am not. If you had read my posts you've seen that I don't expect parents to buy Switches at launch. The value proposition is not good on day one unless you are really into Zelda.

it's not just "a feature". it's the ability to do anything on the internet, besides play a game. it's a big deal.

i do in fact think that they will add a browser later because it's so fucking insane to not have one. like the thing is supposed to have Share functions, is that all in a walled garden too?

also PS i don't believe you actually cross correlated all those users but w/e

M: Oh great, can they play together?

Nothing wrong with a tablet, if a mom wants to give the kids Netflix and (as per original quote) Facebook, then why is she buying a games console?

can you watch netflix on a ps4? or an xbox one? or 3ds? can you get on facebook on those devices?

Sony and Microsoft don't get the benefit of the doubt that Nintendo does. Their plans get picked apart and scrutinized as soon as they're announced. No one ever waits until the latest PlayStation or Xbox actually comes out to see how things go. Nintendo has always has the easiest time of the big three here.

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but web browsing and online are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by having timed exclusives. If you don't let someone browse in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Switch, nor will they purchase any of Nintendo's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Nintendo has alienated an entire market with this move.

Nintendo, publicly apologize and cancel Switch for 360 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

I have been on GAF for like a decade now. Your statement is completely false.

I mean, come on. All it takes is a simple search of threads from the last few months.

Sure, but when the library grows of MP games and no way to use them outside your house...

Yes, that would be absolutely disastrous. No disagreement there.

However, the fact that a browser is not included at launch does not exclude the possibility that it comes later and if it indeed never comes, we still don't know much about the Switch's online infrastructure. Maybe Nintendo devised a workaround to this problem.

Thank you :)

Since you are gonna use a mobilephone anyway in companion with the switch I dont see any problem.

and since web browsers have sucked on every gameconsole i've owned, I seriously dont see a huge market that will be put off by this in reality.

can you watch netflix on a ps4? or an xbox one? or 3ds? can you get on facebook on those devices?

I'm not being funny, monegames, but your ENTIRE posting history for the last 30 days is going into Nintendo threads and making negative comments.

Brilliant! haha

Edit - Your history confirms you're not getting a Switch at launch anyway so no need to be upset. I'm sure a browser will be a feature when you get one years down the line like your plans for Wii U. ;)

This is hilarious.

These are your words on a kid using mobile to play games.

Please stop trying to be clever and read properly.

Sure, some kids don't mind having only mobile games to play but I know that if I, as a kid, ask my parents for a VIDEOGAME SYSTEM and got a 'tablet the third of the price of a Switch' I would be extremely disillusioned.

Never said breath of the wild. More people are playing nintendo games on their phones than will probably ever buy a switch.

Didn't you know that suddenly no one has mobile phones? Before Nintendo went mobile everyone had them, but now Nintendo is removing features that phones so easily, people are incredibly ticked off at Nintendo because suddenly they don't have a good net browsing option.

i honestly have never seen so many people justify a lack of features on a device, by pointing out that other, more capable devices have said features.

every time someone Switches Away from a Switch to do something, because it can't handle a simple thing like a web page or Youtube, it's an invitation to stop using the device.

for my part i've been un-sold hard on Switch. i'll wait a year and see if it grows up or just ends up another smoking crater. it's a drag. i like the hardware.

KingSnake, maybe you'd know. What happens with a 3DS when it comes to wifi hotspot authentication when using public wifi?

Sorry, I have only a Wii U, not a 3ds, so I don't know.

Edit: there is this post about it:

Honestly this may prove to be cumbersome in my case simply because I often connect to wifi spots that require you to login at the webpage. With my phone, the page automatically shows up as soon as I connect to the spot, but I remember my 3DS attempting to do this in the most tedious process. I really hope they considered this when they implemented the wifi connectivity this time around..

But I don't know what exactly that means.

KingSnake, maybe you'd know. What happens with a 3DS when it comes to wifi hotspot authentication when using public wifi?

You need to open the browser and enter the URL of the authentication page. And then you better hope that network has a system in place which automatically redirects you to to the authentication page, otherwise you need to enter the URL by hand. At least that's what I had to do when I tried.

I am not. If you had read my posts you've seen that I don't expect parents to buy Switches at launch. The value proposition is not good on day one unless you are really into Zelda.

That I think goes without saying. That's every console launch, ever. Value can only go up, prices can only go down.

No one is justifying it. People who are excited for Switch and Zelda just aren't that bothered about a web browser being available day 1 or not.

I'm sure the Switch can 'handle' youtube tbf.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

I'm getting the Switch on day one and this 'no browser' issue doesn't really bother me at all but let's not kid ourselves and act as this is a plus. The less devices you have to use to achieve the same functionality the better.

Because I wanted to get a nintendo console. If you read my posting history you would have known that. Nintendo showed they don't want my business, I am posting my opinion on these issues, because I can and I am disapointed in the state of the device at launch. I had planed on getting a switch at launch, but the switch reveal and price of accessories stopped that.

It's a matter of convenience, especially if you're on the way. It's won't be necessarily pleasant to constantly juggle with the Switch and your phone.
