So for someone who really isn't that versed with Aphex Twin's back catelogue and only knows him for Windowlicker and Syro where would I begin with his discography? Recommendations?

rdj has a ridiculously huge library, but to start with:

Richard D James Album
I Care Because You Do
Select Ambient Works 1
Selected Ambient Works 2 (VASTLY different to 1)
Drukqs
Chosen Lords/Analord
Come to Daddy

in that order, imo

This feels like a greatest hits album or something, it must be effortless for this guy. XMAS_EVET10 [120] (thanaton3 mix) is the one. Also, aisatsana [102] to close is absolutely beautiful.

I have a feeling this WAS a collection of his best from the last ten years, and from what he says the next albums will be newer stuff.

agreed, the whole thing is just amazing

It's interesting this is one of the most break heavy aphex works yet, tons of jungle breaks. But it's all pushed back into a style closer to hardcore break beat and rave hardcore. Yet it's at a much lower 140 bpm and has all of his ambient synths on top. Truly some of his most unique blendings yet. The piano wind down is just perfect in every way.

On first listen album seems solid but not amazing. Too many "acid" style tracks for my tastes, but I've never been the biggest afx fan so that's just me.

My British Literature teacher in my Senior year in Highschool kind of put me on Aphex Twin. The first album that I ever purchased from an online vendor was a copy of the Richard D James Album, one of the most nostalgic albums for me, bought it when I was 18, but I was 6 years old when the damn album first dropped.

I absolutely love PAPAT4. If there was a new Hangable Auto Bulb or Analogue Bubblebath EP, it would fit right in.

XMAS_EVET10 is seriously sublime. As beautiful as the best of his ambient stuff, yet energetic and danceable. Masterpiece of a track.

Thanks, gents.

Selected Ambient Works Vol. II is still one of my favorite collections of music.
It was pretty much the soundtrack for my summer of 1997.

Maybe one day he'll release a Vol. III.

Nice list! I do rate I Care Because You Do a little bit higher. Also his Analogue Bubblebath ep's as AFX are pretty up high in my list.

Also, people should really listen to Aphex' amazing track on Nine Inch Nails' Further Down The Spiral, At The Heart Of It All.

Caustic Window LP was great, but Syro is really getting at me. It's the RDJ that has been missing. Glad to hear he is horny again.

I hate to be hyperbolic BUT HOLY SHIT.

How the fuck. This might be his best.

Also, Produk 29 is straight out of Toe Jam and Earl.

The breakdown 4+ mins into CIRCLONTO6A. Wow.

This might be the best RDJ release since SAW I/II.

Does the triple vinyl have two songs per side, I guess? I'm gonna be getting up and down a lot listening to that. Does spreading it out mean the best quality?

Just bought it on vinyl. God this albums incredible. I really wasn't expecting all that much from it, but it just feels so, I don't know.. Aphex I guess. He has such a distinctive touch that sounds like the past done in the 90s for the future. Incredible. His melodic & rhythmic instincts are mindblowing

I really enjoyed ambient works 1 and drukqs so this sounds like its going to be awesome.

So is Syro anything like Selected Ambient Works 85-92? I've never dug more into Aphex Twin than that record.

And when I got to see him live in 2011 he did a weird DJ set with things that don't resemble his ambient music in the slightest. I had fun though :P

Compared to SAW 1, less ambiance, more beats. But still very, very good, and this is coming from someone who loves SAW 1.

It's a fusion of both, to be honest. It's way more ambient than what you probably heard in the 2011 set.

After having listened to the album for a few days, I have to say it's fucking brilliant. As someone mentioned earlier, it almost sounds like a greatest hits album of his work post Drukqs. It's an instant classic Aphex Twin album, through and through.

Is this the part where we rate Aphex Twin's work?

1. Richard D James Album
2. SAW 85 - 92
3. SAW II
4. Come To Daddy
5. ...I Care Because You Do
6. Drukqs

Barely listened to the rest.

1 and 2 are switched for me, but otherwise I'm the same.

It's not quite like the Ambient Works record, but it is surprisingly relaxed (which is my favourite kinda Aphex Twin). I think you'd probably enjoy it.

Really digging this so far. Amazing change of pace when going in to 180db. I was drifting off and then the beat kicks in all of a sudden.

First time listening since the listening party. Awesome album. Produk 29 sounds like a dark Sirisumo song but still distinctly Aphex.

This album really is a journey. The tracks really blend into each other really well, half the time you don't even realise you're already listening to another track.

'180db' is the only blemish on the album, that track is straight up garbage.

Pretty remarkable considering most of these songs were supposedly made over the past 10ish years at different points in time. And yeah, 180db isn't great. The rest of the album is incredible though, and I think it's now my favorite of his. I can't stop listening to it... I feel like I discover new sounds every single time.

That's what make his music unique to me. Layers upon layers of sounds and always exciting to discover new sounds. Also another reason i love this music because in this day and age between all the commercial music this is refreshing.
