BELLEVUE, Wash. - March 7, 2014 - In another industry first, T-Mobile US, Inc. (NYSE: TMUS) today announced the company is offering customers more 4G LTE data and tethering and unlimited international texting - at no extra charge. The updates reflect the latest stage in the evolution of T-Mobile's flagship Simple Choice plan, which launched the company's Un-carrier consumer movement last spring. All Simple Choice customers will automatically enjoy the added benefits of these updates without taking any action whatsoever - in another Un-carrier departure from industry norms.

First, in a move to stay out front of Americans' fast-growing demand for mobile data, the company announced it is sweetening the deal for Simple Choice customers already enjoying unlimited data, talk, and text on America's wicked-fast network - now doubling the amount of high-speed 4G LTE data and tethering to 1GB included in the $50 Simple Choice service plan.

"In the mobile age, wireless data caps and overage fees are just this side of extortion," said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. "Take the basic plans from the Big Two with ridiculously low data limits that hit you with fat overages each month. It's like getting your data from the neighborhood loan shark and paying 100 percent interest when the bill comes due. It's the classic shakedown."

The expansion of Simple Choice to include more of T-Mobile's fastest data and tethering comes as wireless data usage - and tethering laptops and tablets to the web via connected devices - continues to surge. T-Mobile customers use nearly 50 percent more data now than they did just a year ago when Simple Choice first launched, outpacing the industry's growth rate in mobile data usage. And monthly usage on unlimited 4G LTE plans has nearly doubled to over 5GB.

With these updates, Simple Choice customers still start with one line at $50 per month for unlimited data, talk and text on our nationwide network - but will now get a full 1GB of 4G LTE data and tethering - double the previous amounts. Customers can still add a second line for $30 per month and up to three additional lines for $10 per month. Those additional lines also get the extra 4G LTE data with these changes.

As before, Simple Choice customers can always add more 4G LTE data to each of their lines. They can opt for 3GB of 4G LTE data, including tethering, for an additional $10 a month per line (vs. 2.5 GB previously), or 5GB for an extra $20 a month per line. There is a new unlimited 4G LTE option, which now comes with a full 5 GB of tethering, double the previous amount, for an extra $30 per month (vs. an extra $20 previously).

Second, with the new global texting benefits from the U.S. now included in Simple Choice, T-Mobile is the only US wireless carrier to deliver unlimited international texting to virtually anywhere - now from the United States and over 120 countries and destinations around the world - at no extra charge. Unlike with competitors, there is no need to purchase an additional package or special plan to get unlimited global texting and data. It comes automatically with every Simple Choice plan.

And, customers can roam freely in more places. T-Mobile is adding seven additional countries and destinations where postpaid Simple Choice customers enjoy unlimited data and texting while traveling - and low, flat-rate calls for just 20 cents a minute, bringing the total to 122 countries and destinations.

The new benefits will begin immediately on March 23 for customers who choose to run credit and take the postpaid option. For those who prefer not to run credit and opt for prepaid service, unlimited international texting will start on April 26.

Simple Choice customers will automatically get the added benefits of these program updates, so there is no need for existing customers to change anything about their current services or plans. Customers currently with unlimited 4G LTE data will continue to get unlimited 4G LTE data with no change in price, or they can opt for the new unlimited 4G LTE option with twice the tethering.

"In a couple weeks, every single one of our millions of Simple Choice customers will wake up with more value without lifting a finger," said Mike Sievert, Chief Marketing Officer for T-Mobile. "Who does that? We do. Because that's what being the Un-carrier means - giving more to you without asking more from you. I'd love to see our competitors try to follow suit."

More at the link. Disconnect me if old.

Glad I switched from Sprint to T-mobile. The new $30 options seems interesting (unlimited 4G LTE w/e 5 GB Tethering).

Damn, I had the $50 +$20 unlimted plan. Under the new plans, I'll be charged $10 more if I want the unlimted 4g with 5GB tethering.

Edit: Reading the article and not just the bolded says that I can keep the current plan and not get charged, but I won't get the added tethering.

Yeah, rather unfortunate. Another source to clarify that:

If you want more 4G LTE data on any of your lines, you can opt for getting 3 GB of 4G LTE data including tethering for an extra $10 a month per line (thatÂ’s up from 2.5 GB before). Or you can get 5 GB of 4G LTE data including tethering for an extra $20 a month per line (a new offer). And you power users also still have the option to get totally unlimited 4G LTE data, now with 5 GB of 4G LTE tethering , double the previous amount for an extra $30 a month per line (unlimited 4G LTE plans with 2.5GB of tethering were previously an extra $20 per month).

Looks like unlimited data is getting more expensive, but the 5 GB tethering is tempting me still...

I'm post paid. Unlimited talk text and LTE.

I already get like 2gb of free tethering. I don't need 5gb. Is my bill going to go up?
It will not I believe.

As I said, Simple Choice customers will get all these added benefits added to their plans automatically, so thereÂ’s no need to change anything about your current services or rates. No calls. No forms. No hassle. It just works. Existing customers on the existing Unlimited 4G LTE plan (or who sign up before March 23 for it) will be able to choose to stay on that plan (by taking no action) or they can switch to the new version with more tethering for just a few dollars more per month.

We're offered 20GB here. Personally, I'm on 10GB and that's more than enough

I'm surprised people are cheering the need to pay to tether. Thankfully, just change a few things on your Android phone and you can get around it.

What exactly are you supposed to do with only 1 GB of data?

I rarely go over 1GB of data. The only time I ever really use my mobile data is when I'm in the car. Streaming music via Google Music or Pandora and listening to podcasts uses very little data.

Besides, this is 1GB of LTE data. If you go over, you can still use your mobile data at no extra charge, it just gets throttled down to 3G.

Free wifi calling from anywhere in the world to any u.s. number plus free texts and 3g data while roaming in Europe isa god ssend when I'm globe trotting. Excellent speed and coverage in my area when I'm home also.
Love you, T-mobile.

Really compelled to switch to them from Verizon as soon as my contract ends. Extremely tired of limited data plan.

im only still with verizon becuase of my unlimited data paln. if they cancel that. im out

Once t mobile starts improving significantly their network in the US, others are fucked. Not only that but t mobile gets the best variety of phones

That's literally all they have to do at this point. I wonder how AT&T and Verizon feel with T-Mobile breathing down their necks.

All TMobile needs is better 4G coverage and I will probably move over to their side since they get great phones.

So their cheapest plan is $50 a month, that's $25 cheaper than what I pay now after taxes.

I want to switch. I'm just worried about their LTE speeds.
AT&T LTE is so fast here.
Anyone have experience with their speeds in Dallas?

I was on Verizon's unlimited plan and I still bailed.

For the amount of data I was using, it just wasn't worth for the $90 I was paying them a month.

And I would have lost it anyways if I upgraded my phone and I wasn't about to be stuck with a 4S for a while.

Making the move to pre-paid was probably the best decision I've made. Got a Nexus 4, and I can use my (key word being my) phone damn near anywhere in the world (currently in the middle east with pre-paid service).

I'm not in Dallas but I regularly pull down 30Mbps on average on LTE.

I take it this offer doesn't include the people who have the $30 unlimited text, web, and 5GB plan?

The OP is all post paid plans I believe. The $30 is a prepaid plan so completely different. The $30 prepaid plan's limitation is the talk minutes being at 100, LTE data on it is already well above the post paid plans by default.

wish others would follow.

and that t-mobile would improve their coverage.

You gotta help spread the word first. The more people that know about these plans, the more will switch to T-mobile. Once other companies start losing business to T-mobile, they'll start to compete.

I don't think I can do better than what I have right now with Tmo:

50 for 1000 shared minutes
10 for unlimited family text
25 for unlimited data with 5 gb tethering
20 for unlimited data

105 per month with 15% discount from my work

I think if I changed it would be:

80 for simple choice
30 for my unlimited data with 5gb tethering
no data plan for my wife (1 gb free)

110 per month with 15% discount. So I would be paying 5 dollars more for much less...

I'll probably keep this plan until they lower the cost more (which it appears the way it's heading).

Or, I may go post paid with 2 30 dollar plans, but I don't think I can switch from prepaid to post paid like that?

I was very happy with the service I had with T-Mobile before this and now it's even better. I can't see going to any other provider at this point.

This is one thing I'll give carriers a pass on if they offer unlimited. Mobile bandwidth capacity is more limited and I can understand having a cap on tethering if the base plan has no cap.

If I'm wrong in my assumption of capacity I would be happy to be educated on it.

Hmmm... I just signed up with them and got the $20 unlimited data plan that came with 2.5GB of tethering.

I wonder if I can stay in this plan or if I'll have to jump up to the $30 plan to keep unlimited.

Then again, I don't think I even use 5GB per month.
