Tactics Ogre on PS Store this Tuesday (Jeff Rubenstein)

Speaking of SE's PSP remakes, I know Tactics Ogre is much better than the original with all the added content and whatnot, but how does the War of the Lions compare to the PS1 original? I've heard it's both better in some ways and worse in others.

Great thing about downloading is that the game isn't shackled to any piece of media. I can delete/download as many times as I want, as well as install the game on any compatible device (e.g. NGP and maybe even PS3 if Sony ports over the emulator) and have it on multiple systems. I honestly feel like I have more ownership over my downloaded games than my retail bought games.

Except it's tied to an account. If you have multiple PSN accounts (for different regions) then you are actually better off with the UMD version, as you can always play it

Better localization, and nice cutscenes, but the PSP version has slow down.

Hope that when they eventually put it on PSN they'll fix it.

I'm under the impression that it's better in every way but performance. Slowdown during spells, mostly.

I'd probably buy that too if it ever hit PSN.

Does that ever happen? I doubt the slowdown has anything to do with the UMD. Shitty coding won't be fixed by a PSN release.

I can't believe I'm actually double dipping, I'll get the US PSN version for on my PSP, seeing I have most PSP games from that one and will buy the PAL UMD Premium Edition later this month when it releases here in Europe for my collection.

Slowdown during spells (some spells basically take 2x as long as they did on the PSX version), and some people prefer the old translation, but most of that is just nostalgia. There are some reasonable complaints about the translation, but most prefer it for a whole bunch of reasons.

Better translation (though some dislike it)
CG cutscenes with voice acting
Some new events, dungeons, 2 new recruitable chars, and a new class

BUT everytime you use an ability or spell theres some slowdown. Some say it ruins the game, others say its tolerable.

I, for one, think everything else outweighs the slowdown.

Gamespot tackles those fears in the Tactics Ogre review actually and none of those problems are evident in this remake: Gamespot review

PSP version has more slowdown.

What makes it nutty, is that the PSP already has a full speed running Playstation emulator built, it can run the original game rip just fine, yet when porting a game that is essential the original with nicer cut-scenes it runs worse! Simply sloppy.

So War of the Lions is the version to get. That's what I was hoping to hear, and I'll probably track it down sometime soon so I can have it alongside Tactics Ogre, which I'm getting Tuesday.

War of the Lions sucks in every way that matters in comparison to the original Final Fantasy Tactics: it has slowdown, a flavorless retranslation, tinnier music, and it's more expensive. Do yourself a favor and save yourself $10-20 ... just buy the PSX version off of the PlayStation Network.

Also note: Matsuno had nothing to do with the PSP port. When in doubt, buy the version that He touched with his magical hands!

Apparently those who've ripped the game have had the slowdown vanish. Even if that didn't happen, there isn't anything stopping SE from doing that, as a few PSP games on PSN have had changes from their UMD releases (some for the better, others for the worse).

I thought you could play any PSN game on your memory regardless of which account you are signed into? At least that's how it works on the PS3. In any case just sign into the account that bought the game when you want to play.

There was a thread asking that last week you should check out. It isn't as unanimous as you make it out to be, and there are legitimate complaints, but a coherent translation goes a long way, even if it is a bit too over the top at times.

The PSP and PS3 differ in that regard. The PSP has a system wide PSN account (it won't delete other accounts material between setups though).
PSN has never fully been integrated into the PSP unfortunately (which the NGP thankfully is all about, always on connectivity and the full feature set).

On FF Tactics, I think I remember reading an EGM or 1up review saying that the slowdowns were the same on the PS1 version and that they were disappointed that SE didn't fix it on the PSP one.

I think the isometric view for Tactics Ogre makes it faster paced. The 3D battlefield for FF Tactics can get tiring and jarring. And I think the FF Tactics games, on GBA and DS, also is pretty sluggish.

I wouldn't yet bet on NGP allowing multiple simultaneous PSN accounts though. Sony may well adopt the attitude that while PS3 is a shared box in the living room, everyone should have their own personal NGP.

This. I highly doubt Sony wants multiple accounts on the NGP.

Ripping it does nothing to alleviate the slowdown.

Amazon order for the UMD version cancelled.

This is great news; now my PSP can dual wield Peace Walker in the UMD drive and TO on the memory stick.

What you need is FFT in the UMD, with TO and VS on the memory stick.

I could've swore I was looking at FF Tactics looking at those screenshots in the OP.

... I liked the battle system in FFT but story was batshit insane. I take it this is much in the same vein?

Less magic, more politics.

Wow at that Euro boxart. The NA version is pretty weird, with people falling/flying all over the place. Nothing about it says "war" or "politics" except that some of them are wearing armor.

The Euro version is all understated strength. I love games that are confident enough to look classy.

Thank Christ. Why did it that this long to confirm? As long as it shows up around the time of the Aus release on Feb 24 then I'm happy. I can't wait to be playing this one on my Go.

Just cancelled my amazon preorder so I can buy from PSN. I would love to play this on NGP, not to mention I don't have to wait for shipping now, so I can play as soon as possible!

The Euro version boxart is the same as the US version but with less censorship and a different, prettier background.

The thing in the OP is a placeholder(also the box for the collectors edition).

Maybe all these UMD pre-order cancellations will send S-E a fucking hint.

Naturally they'll take it the wrong way and wait until the day the game ships to announce the PSN version, so people can't cancel their pre-orders.

can you guys clear something up for me? so if this is going to be downloadable on PSN, does that mean i'd potentially be able to play it on my TV? or is it a PSP only thing?

No, PSP only. You can download it from the PS3 and then transfer it to the PSP via USB. You could play it on the TV if you had a 2000 or later model PSP and the proper cable though.

Did anyone ever confirm that 3rd Birthday won't be on? There was that thread about the joystick article but I don't know if we ever got confirmation

I need a new Psp for tactics ogre and want a go because of the sweet size but I do want to play 3rd Birthday too...

I wanna get this game, but I'm turned off by the brown everything next gen color scheme. Do some of the environments look different?

Also, how's the story?

This isn't brown everything.
