Taiwan teen dies after playing Diablo 3 for 40 hours.

Maybe he died from orthostatic hypotension?
Seems like being in one position for so long and suddenly standing could lead to crazy blood pressure fluctuations, which can kill you (though usually you would feel lightheaded/dizzy, but some people can pass out). Maybe it lead to an aneurysm or something.

Really sad. I would think he probably dozed off a couple of times in that room and got SOME sleep, but staying in one position for so long probably did him in.

I've had my fair share of gaming marathons where I don't move for extended periods of time or notice that I'm getting hungry, etc. But I do eventually notice I'm hungry or have to use the bathroom, or my joints are stiff from not moving. Pretty much forced to get up occasionally to take care of basic needs, and eventually tired enough to go to sleep. I obviously had a fucked up schedule where I would be awake for 20 hours at a time (or more) and sleep for around 12, but I did sleep/eat/piss even at my most hardcore gaming.

I simply cannot fathom how anyone could get caught up in something for that long and not at least get up to stretch.

Had a 28 hours straight Baldur's Gate 2 session. Good for bragging rights now but I honestly felt like I was about to die afterwards.

The longest I've played a game straight is 20 hours, which just happened recently with Persona 3 FES (awesome game...) for me.
I probably ate at least once during that time, though, and moved around, of course

Without eating or moving around at all, I've probably gone about 12 hours straight

40 hours is crazy

Gaf makes fun of dead people. It's an unfortunate truth. Almost as sickening as the Darwin Awards to me, but hey, that's the internet.

It's unusual though and not acceptable behavior in the real world unless you're truly a total jerk-off.
A person died and to think sadists go for 'I'll be cool and go for a laugh' coupled with so many ignorant other comments it's surprising.

As it's kept being mentioned 'why did no one check on him'... It's possible they checked on him and he was happily playing up until something went wrong.
'40hours without food and sleep can kill you?' which had to be addressed by other posters...Really people, really? If you can't think outside the box at least think inside it ffs :|

Try not moving and using the bathroom for 40 hours and let me know how that goes. It would suck if he had an unknown health issue that caused this, but it is just as likely this person got themselves killed by having fucked up priorities. It wouldn't be the first time.

Right, because he didn't completely do it to himself. A kitten thrown in a dumpster. An abused child. I have all the sympathy in the world. This guy? No.
Nice flawed logic... This person could possibly have been an abused child, traumatized, suffered from mental illness & or drug abuse. Have you met people in reality? Seriously wow, it's just mind boggling seeing such ignorance.

what caused it in your case? i hope your recovery is a swift one, i'm sure its not a good time.

Had a cardiac catheterisation the day before because of chest pains - the
blood clot is probably a complication of the artery being damaged during
the procedure.
They didnt find any major blockages during the catheterization.

I can't feel sorry in the slightest for people like this. You have every opportunity to leave the computer for a few minutes to stretch, have a glass of water, and even a small bite to eat. It was an internet cafe for fuck's sake.

lol having sustained permanent spinal damage 11months ago you make that out to be a challenge? Seriously, I don't like to argue or call people ignorant but some people just have this tiny bubble of reality and lack any form of outside understanding to the most simplest concepts that face people and their concept of others realities is non-existent.

Sure, the guy isn't a land mine victim with nothing but a rag as a bandage to treat the problem. That's not to say he wasn't mentally unstable, trauma victim, drug addict etc and thus his judgement and actions were not that of someone who is stable. Even if he was perfectly 'stable' the outcome is still tragic and to 'lol' about it is poor in any form.

I'm ignorant because I don't assume everybody has been beaten as a child or has down syndrome? Blow me. I read it as a guy who didn't at all take care of himself because he'd rather play video games for 2 days straight. I'll try to fight the tears back.

A sad story :( I guess that maybe some drugs were involved since he managed to play for that long. Pity that his body/heart couldnt take it.

I wonder why the staff at the cafe didnt notice this. If i'd worked at a cafe, i'd think i'd noticed if a guy had been there for 40 hours straight. Unless the cafe is huge and there is pretty much always crowded there.

Drugs had to be involved here. How could a person focus on the game if they haven't eaten or gone to the bathroom for nearly two days? I'd be dancing around after about 3 or 4 hours if I didn't get to take a pee break. And while I did spend almost every waking moment for the better part of a week playing Vice City when it came out back in 2002, I had the foresight to buy a couple of big jars of peanut butter. Something doesn't add up in this story.

Thanks for the answers guys.

I can't imagine 40 hours without food. But I've gone long stretches without eating and not feeling too hungry because I was really into a game at the time. My family would sometimes look at me and say "does playing that also fill you up" because I would sometimes skip meals because I was playing and I didn't really feel the hunger much. I guess when you're really into something, your hunger and thirst can be suppressed just because you don't want to drop what you're doing. I know that sounds nuts but I'm sure some of you guys can understand.

This is exactly how I get. I don't get hungry at all if I'm into a game. I eventually stop when I get tired though. After I'm done, the hunger kicks in. The longest I've played a game nonstop was 11 hours in MGS4. I thought that was ridiculous, but 40? That's insane.

Shit, you beat me. My record was 10 hours straight with MGS4.

40 hours is not that insane. At least to me. I played for 26 hours straight before and I'm sure I could've done more, but I was starting to get tired and I decided to take a nap. However, I really think they should make it so you can't play more than a certain number of hours at an internet cafe, maybe around 24 hours. Then again, it's not stopping people from going into another internet cafe.

I can understand how he can play for this long without eating or drinking though. There was a time when I used to play MapleStory - terrible game, but very addicting. I would nearly forget about hunger and thirst in 16 hour long grinding sessions.

Well, two things.

One of the ways people deal with things that frighten them / sadden them / traumatize them is humor. I'm in a wheelchair, I make jokes about it constantly. It's hilarious. My favorite one currently is telling people I hate handicapped people and watching their reaction.

Second thing is not everyone shares the same valuation of life, especially when it's over half a world away. It's actually normal.

It's one of those realities people refuse to see because "we should be better!". Yeah, we should be.

But, we're not.

And yes, jokes immediately came to mind from me, too, but I resisted posting due to the nature of NeoGAF.

Why is this only ever reported out of Asia? You've gotta imagine stuff like this happens all over the world. Why do we only ever hear of it happening in Asian countries?

Because in Asia a lot of gaming is done in internet cafes, where you pay by the hour so there is a tendency to sit there and never move because you don't want to waste your money.

In the west most people are gaming from home, so taking a break, a trip to the fridge, etc, are not that big a deal.

Probably blood clots killed him. After sitting in one spot for so long he developed them, stood up, and the change in blood pressure sent a clot to his heart or brain.

The longest I was up for (not playing games) was like three days straight during finals week one year in college, but of course I was moving around to places and still eating and drinking. I can't imagine sitting in one place, let alone playing one game for 40 hours straight. I usually start to see tracers and my mind turns to mush any time I've been up for more than 24 hours.

Why would you even go two days without eating?
Playing for two days straight with both food and bathroom breaks, fair enough, if you have nothing better to do with your time, but without eating? That's just not even an enjoyable experience at all
