If you haven't watched this series since it debuted in the early 90's, or you dismissed it at the time because of the Crypt-keeper, it's time to re-watch or watch this amazing show.

The beauty of the show's singular episode structure was the ability it gave it's rotating cast of directors to kill off famous names. The series' credits is littered with character actors who were famous at the time or would become famous later on. Names like Michael J. Fox, Christopher Reeve, Tim Curry, Jon Lovitz, Ed Begley Jr., Joe Pesci, Don Rickles, and tons of others recognizable names cameod during the show's 7-season run. Because the directors and actors were rarely every the same, each episode feels wholly unique: some are pulpy and over-the-top while others are just dark and haunting.

But one thing stayed the same: Tales from the Crypt always pushed a dark underlying theme of hoisting the begrudged on their own petard. It took no pity on the meek. Almost every episode contains some type of revenge fantasy gone-wrong. How the plot backfires is always the most twisted part of the show.

The showrunners were some of Hollywood's biggest moguls at the time. Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future), Joel Silver (Predator, Die Hard, and Lethal Weapon), and David Giler (Alien) were all executive producers for the show's entire run. This was a large reason why the show was able to attract famous actors and directors for one-off episodes.

It's the right time of year to give this show another shot. A ton of the full epsiodes are on Youtube. I recommend starting with this insane episode featuring Lance Henriksen in his prime:

I LOVE this series. My library back home has the entire series I believe, so any time I go back to visit my parents I borrow one or two DVDs. Sometimes the effects are meh but jesus, the stories are always so fun in a perfectly twisted way.

I used to actually impress people with my crypt keeper laugh, that shit was on point. Then I hit puberty :(

The two I remember the most clearly:

The one with Michelle Johnson trying to get one over on a logging camp
The the craziest poker game in the history of poker w/ Henriksen & Kevin Tighe.

edit: OH, and the one with Bobcat Goldthwait as the ventriloquist.

Most of these weren't very good or scary when they came out.

Episode with the criminal handcuffed tot he dead cop was pretty good, though. Also the one with the blind logger. Maybe they just needed to stay away from supernatural stuff.

That was awesome episode. It been over 15 years since I seen that episode.

Kinda agree, but some of them are equally amazing. Korman's Kalamity is one of these exceptions.

Don't remember that one. I have been tempted to buy these on DVD because I like the bad ones in a way. Entertaining badness is also what makes The Outer Limits and Tales from the Darkside good.

Edit: Just checked, I do remember Korman's Kalamity. It was definitely an episode of a television show.

I watched a number of these when I was younger, enjoyed it quite a bit from what I saw. Movies were great, too!

Is it worth it to go through the entire series, or are there only select episodes that should be checked out?

Can anybody recommend a good episode/season to dive into?

I vaguely remember some of the episodes. But i'm incredibly nostalgic about the opening sequence - scared me to death as a kid, but I couldn't wait for my Grandad to show me it every Sunday morning. I think he taped it, wherever it was on UK TV, and would show me it in the morning. I must have only been 8 or something.

This top 25 episode list is pretty good:

Just started watching, great recommend OP. Loved the first two seasons, third season doesn't seem as great but I will keep it up.

Oh, and Ventriloquists Dummy from season 2 gave me the chills and I'm 32 years old! Impressed!

I local comic book store recently went out of business and was selling their DVD and Bluray inventories for dirt cheap and I was able to get the first 4 seasons on DVD for $12 dollars. I plan on picking up seasons 5 and 6, but I want to know why season 7 tends to get crapped on by alot of the fans.

Also, why has HBO essentially ignored this series from their history? It's almost like it's become their Amos and Andy. Is it because of its cheesy lowbrow fare, or is it because it has aged out of relevance like Arliss? I kind of see the same happening with Oz. They were both groundbreaking shows at the time at a time where most people didn't yet associate HBO with original programming.

Who knows. I'm kind of surprised they haven't brought it back after shows like American Horror Story and Black Mirror are doing so well.

Would HBO even do it, or have they become too above it all at this point? I know that TNT is working on a reboot, but I'm not really interested. Has TNT managed to assert itself as a network on par with FX or AMC? Because I can't see the show being able to get away with doing what HBO was able to do so with their version.

My favorite one was the one with Christopher Reeves....when they turned Meatlaf into steaks. That episode always made me hungry lol.

And the zombie girl that had Aunt Viv in it still freaks me out.

Chris Reeves was hilarious in that one! I never thought he had it in him. I watched that episode recently on Youtube and it made me sad.

He left the world way too soon -- he and his wife:-(

Best one Is maniac ax killer dressed as Santa Claus 🎅.
Naughty... OR NICE!!

Also Everyone should check out Demon Knight. The only TFTC movie worth talking about.

If you saw 30 Days Of Night and thought that it was a clever premise, know that it was a ripoff of an episode of this show called Comes The Dawn. The episode was based on a story in Haunt of Fear #26, published in... I want to say 1954 but it might be 1953.

I've always had a weak spot for the first episode. William Sadler is so damn charming in it.

Cutting Cards is great too.

The one where the ventriloquist's puppet was controlled by his brother who made up his hand. For some reason that whole episode freaked me the fuck out.

I've really been wanting to rewatch this series but it isn't even on HBO GO. I guess DVD collections are the only way to go now?

Cryptobump

Good evening, boils and ghouls. Tonight's terror tale is about a thread that didn't stay dead! Will one of your ghost posts be included in tonight's de-composition? Don't hit that deadit button!

Crypt Keeper took pun slinging to an art form.

And he was always in such high spirits

Yeah. Has HBO whitewashed it from its history? It's almost as if it were ashamed that it once produced a horror anthology before kicking off their golden age period.

Cutting Cards is one of the few episodes i remember so vividly that even the name stuck with me, the ending was pretty humorous in a dark way.

Funny this thread popped up.
Bought seasons 3 and 4 for 10 dollars each at best buy. Just watched one episode tonight right before this.

Always loved this show but I'm sure I haven't seen all the episodes. I'll probably pick up the rest of the seasons. Is there a blu ray release?

So the last season is considered not so good?

The feels good times , I really enjoyed that show

They made tales from the hood too right ? Classic Movie
Nah tales from the hood was produced by spike lee. Directed by the lightskin dude with dreads who played the little boys teacher in the film. I'm pretty sure he wrote an directed this and Sprung another 90's Classic.
