OK, the scans helped it quite a bit. Looks lower-res than expected, but nice nonetheless. It's just Symphonia looks better and the people have not this strange faces.

This looks so nice. Please tell me this is not some kind of JRPG with random encounters and other 'goodies' that come with the genre.

If it's like Tales of Symphonia, enemies will be randomly created, but you can dodge 'em.

If its like the others, enemies will be displayed on screen and when you touch them you go into battles which are real time.

Looks nice but also looks like they really couldn't handle HQ 3d. I'm guessing after the experiment of ToS PS2 (60fps -> 30fps, slowdown, rougher look) they decided to go with low-detail smaller characters which should let them achieve a smooth 60fps.

Now we just gotta see how the battle system looks. Since unlike Eternia/Symphonia/DestinyII/Rebirth the characters in battle are gonna look extremely different than the outside of battle version.

On a side note I think the cast art looks awesome and it's easily the best looking Tales of... cast to date IMO. It reminds me a little of the Stelladeus style with the kinda shiny reflecting skin-tight clothes. I look forward to 2000 screen chats with these designs :D

I can't stop looking at these screens. I can imagine that in motion it must looks like a moving picture book. Good news about the avoidable enemy encounters btw. I'll give it a chance for that fact alone (and for how much I like how it looks)

Avoidable encounters are likely but until we see pictures you can't be sure.

DestinyII/Rebirth - random encounters
Symphonia - avoidable enemies on map

Yeah, that doesn't mean anything. Given how early the game is I'd imagine these dungeon shots are just raw dumps of yet-to-be-populated areas.

Isn't the release set for spring 2005...??

No, what made you think that? The magazine articles just say "2005." Going by previous Tales games, I'd say sometime in December is a safe bet.

I think I read that somewhere... but it does sound unlikely

Wow, that looks very nice. I thought they were using 2D backgrounds initially (when I saw the first couple shots), but that's clearly not the case.

Actually, I imagine what's his face at Tales Studio will probably generalize the designs for the ingame portraits. Like the difference between the inomata portraits in ToD2. It's almost more apparent in ToS/ToR.

Jackfrost: well, early ToR shots/trailers were shown like this too :/ So it could be possibly random encounters again, not that I mind personally :D Tales battling = win.

Looks more high-poly than Symphonia, but textures are blurrier. And the on-screen characters don't look so hot (kind of pixlated).

Game should have been developed on the GameCube hardware.

I hope it gets a NA release.
After Symphonia's western success, I'm sure it will. Hopefully that market still holds in the platform jump, it'd be a real shame to see the Tales brand suddenly drop back to it's PSone level obscurity here.

I am picking this baby up then. I wanted a GC version since ToS is GC, but the PS2 version will do also.

Hopefully Namco smarten up and realise that the huge success of Symphonia could actually be capitalised upon. It really is throwing money away to not release a GC version.

Yeah... I'm sort of surprised there's no GC version actually given how close Nintendo and Namco are becoming plus Symphonia's amazing western sales. I mean, just because it missed JP targets by 150k, it seems a bit extreme to drop the platform, especially when something like Xenosaga missed targets too. Who knows though, maybe GC will get a quick "plus" port like Symphonia got on PS2...

Symphonia sold 350K on GC which is very profitable. Add on the 400K+ the eventual ps2 version sold and you have a game that altogether sold 750K. Fine that is less than Destiny 2, but add on the 450K and counting sold in the west and Symphonia is easily the biggest Tales game ever. Oh well, I suppose this could be used as another example of Nintendo not even trying to compete eh?

ToS GC also sold 184K in Europe which isn't bad at all since the game came out in November.
