Highly recommend all of his collaborations with Masaki Kobayashi and Akira Kurosawa, as well as Sword of Doom.

That's an incredible list of cinematic masterpieces. Very few actors have such a resume.

Arthouse cinema in Ikebukuro

Article:
Tatsuya Nakadai has passed away.
Mr. Nakadai graced our talk shows on multiple occasions, sharing with us his own sense of pride and the brilliance of Japan's golden age of cinema through that powerful voice of his.
Even when there were no talks scheduled, he would frequently visit whenever his films were being screened, taking a seat in the very back row and enjoying the movie alongside the other audience members. He would always greet us staff with a smile, and we felt a profound happiness in being able to share the same space with a legendary actor of his caliber.
Mr. Nakadai's achievements are etched into film. We intend to continue screening those films for as long as possible. From all of us on staff, we sincerely pray for his soul's eternal peace.

I've only seen 11 of his pictures but every one was a masterpiece or close!

RAN 1985 is arguably the greatest Samurai/Middle Ages/Shakespeare adaptation of all time.
The Human Condition is better than Schindler's List, and one of the most poetic Trilogies of cinematic history.

And I have YET to see Harakiri which has an incredible reputation on it's own topping so many best of all time lists.

Dang this guy was a legend, and great movies. I actually didn't realize he was still around and would have guessed he had passed awhile ago like Mifune.

I only saw Ran for the first time fairly recently. I loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone. He was incredible in it. So much of that film rests on that performance and he delivered it so well, naturally flitting back and forth between the frail, bewildered old man and the warlord who forged an empire through force of will.

Thanks for the Harikiri and Goyokin reminder, gotta get on those. And damn, what a legend. RIP boss.

Time to search for these Criterion masterpieces to honor this man's work.

RIP.

I haven't seen many of his films, but his performance in Harakiri is incredible and the film itself is a masterpiece.
