TCL P607 P Series ( the new mid range/budget 4k/HDR recommendation)

Just picked up my set last night and it's well worth $600! Horizon Zero Dawn looks mind blowing, the Forza 7 HDR videos from gamersyde look amazing, and the OS and built in apps aren't too bad...surprisingly.

One game that shows off 4K HDR really well is Resogun. I knew Horizon and Wipeout would look great but I didn't expect Resogun to look as good as it does.

I could also see now why so many have said the addition of HDR is a bigger deal than the jump in pixels alone. I'm a huge fan of this technology.

While talking about HDR, it's extremely annoying that MS is unable or unwilling to update the OG XBO to support HDR. Sony did the right thing by updating all of their systems.

Wait is this accurate? 4k HDR Local Dimming without Game Mode is still 31ms of input lag? That's not that bad at all, sure not as good as 15ms but still solid

I tried it on my set and while it's noticeable, the latency is not bad outside of game mode. Though after a bunch of tests, I still prefer the more snappy response in game mode and most of the IQ differences in and out of game mode are negligible.

Oh I've already done that.

Is there a reason why Netflix Dolby vision content looks so dark? It looks good but I like a brighter picture, but when I brighten it it screws up the black levels.

Have you tried adjusting the gamma setting in the Roku app? It's likely set to 2.2,i would try changing it to 2.0 or 1.8 when using Netflix.

I guess I am confused. I thought you could output HDR with the OG PS4? Do they not come together in some fashion?

HDR and 4K are separate technologies and aren't dependent on each other. The OG PS4 will display HDR content at 1080p.

My 2010 Panasonic Tv is displaying bars across the screen. So this would be a good tv for Xbox one,PS4 and maybe hooking a VR PC to it? Never heard of the TCL brand until now,but ratings are high. Amazon has it for $649 but ships in 1-2 months.

The best buy version (P605) is $50 cheaper since it's missing the headphone jack on the Roku controller and you can pick it up within days.

After checking amazon dozens of times a day waiting for it to come back in stock, i saw it pop up on early saturday morning. Put my order in. They just e-mailed me that they don't have it to ship to me..pretty bummed. Wish they could have let me know sooner than a day before delivery. Would nab the best buy version but have the thing paid off in amazon gift cards. Don't know what direction to take now. Wait for 2 months? pick another tv?

Another great review? This TV really seems to be killing it! Will have to check it out in store. My Mitsubishi DLP bulb is starting to go dim again and I'm thinking it may finally be time to upgrade. Wish the 65" was out though. Any ideas what the price for that size will be?

Assuming it's priced below its closest competitors it sounds like it'll be around $1000

This seems pretty good huh? How would it compare to the much more expensive Sony X900E? Obviously this is a budget TV and the Sony is a mid-range, but if this is even close to as good it's clearly a better value. Input lag is the one thing I can see is objectively better, and that's of course very nice for gaming.

Not sure you can get this TV here in Sweden though. The closest match I can find to the model number is U55P6046. Would that be this one, or something different? Gah, it's so annoying that TV manufacturers always have to use different model numbers for the same TV in the US and Europe.

their tvs outside the us seem to be completely different. in the us they use roku. specs aside, in other regions they seem to be using android or other operating system. :\

Man this TV is killing in the reviews. I have really enjoyed it so far myself.

Has anyone hooked up their PC to it? I was going to give it a try and was wondering if it was worth it. I do not think it will be a permanent thing, but I wanted to test some PC games on it.

I hooked up my PC game and after trying and failing at getting Mass Effect to display in HDR, the signal bugged out and displayed everything in pinks and greens when I tried to load up shadow of Mordor. I think I need a higher quality HDMI cable.

The latest review posted a few posts up puts the X900E as 2nd to this TV.

I got to check it out at my local BB today, even though the sales guy swore up and down that they don't display TCLs. I found it way over in the corner.

I was really surprised how goo d it looked, and that the motion was so smooth. I nearly broke down and got it, but I am determined to wait for the 65", seeing's how I don't even have a 4K source to feed it yet.

The 55P6046 is a totally different TV.
The 55P607 is only available in the US, there is no equivalent model elsewhere and it sucks..

Oh shit, my local bestbuy finally got these in. I'm trying so hard to hold out for the 50" but I don't know if I can wait until the end of the year.

fyi the 50incher is probably only going to be $100 less judging by how pricing goes for other sets and preliminary pricing.

One week later, and I'm still loving this TV. The picture is absolutely amazing, and the added Roku functionality makes it even better. I have no idea why Best Buy never seemed to have this TV on display.

Because it would outsell more expensive sets that they probably have more margin in ;)

I don't know about "hands down" but yeah the value is what pushed it to the top.

The sony tv beats the tcl tv hands down for sure. The dirty screen effect on the tcl is enough to knock it down a peg or two imo. I'm trading out my tcl for a different tv on Saturday hoping for a better screen. I will keep it even of the screen isn't better but as of now it knocks the tv down from a 10/10 to an 8/10. The dse can be super distracting in certain games, the witness is a good example of this. Something about the slow movement speed and the large splotches of color in the witness really makes the dse super obvious.

Yeah if you're going to have areas of uniform color it's going to be a lot more noticeable. Why slow panning around a clear blue sky is often used as a test.

I actually noticed it a lot on the "Downtown" level of The Last of Us. The black levels in that section are messed up so all the blacks look grey.

Can you show me a picture of what you mean during gameplay? Really want to decide if this is something that would bother me or if it's just something that certain people are picky with.

Pictures don't really show it. For me it's like wearing glasses that are all smugged up and covered with dust so everywhere you look you see the same darker areas. I don't notice it at all when playing rocket league but it sticks out like crazy in the witness. Horizon zero dawn is good unless I'm doing a slow pan over the landscape, which is something I do often in games. You might just want to buy it and see for yourself, best buy will let you return a tv for any reason within 14 days. I'm getting a different tv delivered on Saturday and they didn't hassle my at all about the exchange.

Scratch that went to Bestbuy and picked up the version with the basic remote. This TV is legit. Horizon looked amazing on the Pro, and even my standard blurays look great. Im a believer. Awesome TV.

Got mine today!

Why the shit would they do that? We (Australia) have the X2, C2 and P20 2017 models. I was hoping it was the P20 :(

Don't know! I read in this somewhere it might have to do with the Roku software that's on the tv.

I don't even give a damn about tv software, I got enough tv devices that can access Netflix and YouTube already

Maybe they'll release it here (and over on your end) someday soon with a different model number. Let's hope!

The roku function is pretty great though. Not having to turn on my ps4 to watch Netflix or YouTube is great. The twitch app is really bad though. As far as I can tell you can't even look at the channels your subscribed to, you just have to search for everything or hope that what you want to see is something they decided to push to the front page for you.

It shows what you followed but it doesn't show chat which sucks

Are YouTube, Netflix, Vudu, and Amazon Prime the only apps that support 4K HDR? Was really impressed to see both Vudu and Netflix support Dolby vision.

I got this TV two days ago, and it's perfect for me. I was content to wait it out with my existing FALD 1080p LED until OLEDs dropped in price and VRR was available over HDMI, but this TV came along with a great price/performance and I decided it was a great "tide me over" candidate.

This thing rocks. Inky blacks, bright crispness. Horizon: Zero Dawn looks downright stunning. The 4K HDR videos on YouTube sold me on HDR, just beautiful. I already had two Rokus and really like their UI. It's awesome having that built into the TV. Now I'm thinking about getting an Xbone just to have a UHD Blu Ray player...

So I've had my set for about a week now and overall I am very happy with it.

I can notice some DSE (dirt screen effect) if I pull up a full-screen single color page, but when watching movies/playing games it's not really noticeable.

The FALD works pretty well, even though I can see the flashlighting with it off it pretty much takes care of that issue when you have the fald (which is local contrast in the picture settings).

Playing games I actually play with the game mode set to off (since on = no FALD) but I don't really notice any input lag with it off so it's fine for me.

Horizon looks amazing on the tv, as do the 4k movies I've watched so far (Hacksaw ridge, John Wick, La La Land).

Coming from a KS8000 this tv solved most of my issues with that tv (IE flashlighting/pillar of light issues).

The only downside is that the TCL can't quite get as bright in smaller areas with bright on dark screens, so the colors don't "pop" quite as much as the KS8000 tv did.

Overall for 600 bucks you can't really complain, it's a decent 4k/hdr tv that works pretty damn well.

On another note, I REALLY wish nvidia/windows would get their act together and fix HDR support on windows 10. It's still broke and nvidia is blaming microsoft as it seems to be an issue with how windows handles hdr, at least from what I read.

Not to mention HDR set to "on" in windows desktop makes the colors TERRIBLE, everything is dull and washed out, the complete opposite effect you want, so just have to leave it off when I use it on my pc, which is a shame.

I don't think that one is FALD, just plain local dimming (which edge lit lcd's can have).

Also it doesn't support Dolby Vision, only HDR10.

I'd say for an extra $100 the bigger size + FALD + Dolby Vision would be worth it over that one.

While talking about HDR, it's extremely annoying that MS is unable or unwilling to update the OG XBO to support HDR. Sony did the right thing by updating all of their systems.

It's not that they are unwilling to. It's that the OG Xbox One does not have the power to do proper HDR. That's why the Xbox One S has the small bump in power to handle HDR without compromise. They could probably enable it, but some of the games would take a performance hit or would refuse to run with HDR enabled. You would then have complaints about "Why enable it if I can't use it on half the games that support HDR?" from gamers.

I'm not sure I understand the need for both HDR and the Dolby Vision thing. Are both needed to make the 4K purchase worth it? Because I'm interested in getting one of the smaller TV's, like the 43". I see the TCLS405 offers the 4k and HDR, but not the Dolby Vision. In order to get the most out of the TV do I have to get the P-Series? Does anyone have any input before I decide to take the plunge?

Thanks.

I liked this review. He confirmed what most of us suspected, that the TV will drop to a 48Hz refresh rate when detecting 24Hz content. That's how it displays it without judder. Good review. So far the small amount of pixel blur when playing fast paced games, even when in game mode, is my only negative, but then again it really is not that bad or a deal breaker. Well, for me at least.

My understanding is that they are different ways of displaying "hdr content" which essentially means more dimanic colors. horizon: zero dawn uses hdr but Netflix shows use dolby vision.

If you don't have dolby vision you will not experience more dynamic colors in things that use dolby vision.

Keep in mind in an extreme novice when it comes to this stuff.

The HDR stuff is fluid so its hard to say if you're missing out if you don't have dolby vision. Its usually just best to try and future proof as much as possible if you plan on holding on to the set for a long time.
