Teacher drops the n-word during a class assembly

Then you'd be wrong. I care about racism. I just don't understand why language has that much importance to some.

Language is extremely important in defining and structuring many things about a culture.
To say or imply otherwise indicates a fundamental lack of awareness on the importance that language serves.

You don't understand the strength of the n-word to blacks and how it's impacted them, but you care about racism?

Damn this is some 10/10 quality shit right here.

It's a racial slur, arguably one of the worst ones. Se might as well have just yelled "dirty jews" or something similar. You don't just drop the n-word like it's nothing.

You care about racism and don't understand how language could be problematic?

Problematic? Of course. But that's not the point. Americans make too much drama about these things, it's not related to racism. 'Fuck' is the same (or almost). That doesn't happen in Europe, we don't have these "prohibited words". That's why I don't get it.

Why would I? I'm not American. Do you know racist words used in Spanish? Of course not.

I guess you would have to experience how much bite a racial slur has to understand. I remember when I was a kid and being called "spic" and "wetback" damn it really cuts at you. Now I just see people using them as morons and don't really care but still, not fun to remember that shit when I was a kid.

Oh, and they're using "illegals" now instead of "wetback."

Edit: actually I would probably laugh if I heard it randomly shouted now. Just for the absurdity of it. But I can understand that some people don't find funny at all.

You know what? That word association game was strong.

Black student gets up and the racist teacher dropped both Blood and Nigger in the span of 6 seconds?

:\

If those are some of the first words to come to your mind when seeing a minority then you just might be a racist.

We get it Europe is a utopia, but here in America black people are dying in the streets left and right, black children are getting shitted on by the education system, and the media bends over backwards to find reasons why this shit doesn't matter.

I don't mean no harm but educate yourself before speaking on such subjects instead of speaking from a place of privilege and ignorance.

Germany also doesn't have a history that extended from the inception of it's nation (1776) until 1968 in which during that time blacks weren't treated as people, but rather as property, in which they were raped, hung, burned, fed to dogs, shot, tortured for "science" and all kinds of fucked up shit.

This would be the equivalent in your country of a German teacher and a Jewish teacher whose grandparents were holocaust victims and the German teacher shouting out "concentration camp" to the Jewish teacher as her reaction word.

I'd be pretty pissed if I were Jewish and in the vicinity of such statements. To say Black Americans overreact to racism is just a stupid thing to say especially when you're not from the country and clearly don't really know anything about it. It just makes you seem ignorant and not enlightened as I imagine the lot of you folks who makes these kind of statements in these kind of threads think you are.

You don't get what I mean. But whatever, I have no intention to derail this thread even more.

But this is telling...what? What message does it conveys that some people don't find it worthy of making it in the news? Their insensivity on the matter?Or just that they disagree with you?

Some people are just not Millennial enough. We *need* to be in a *constant* state of being *offended* damnit.

That particular issue isn't isn't about "where you're from."
It's about language.

Holy Shit is this wrong. Fuck is a harmless expletive, "nigger" is a racial slur use to degrade African Americans ever sense slavery. Let me explain a bit of American history to you.

African Americans have only had equal rights in this country for 50 years. Nigger is the word used to degrade african americans threw the entire civil rights movement, slavery, and life in between. Only black people would be called niggers, except if a white person sympathized and tried to help black people, in which case they'd be white niggers.

They say nigger means a stupid person, but it only means that because black people were poorly educated so obviously they were stupid. The only reason why you would say it is if you were a racist.

What's more millennial? This faux state of constant offendedness, or you being offended at this supposed constant state of offendedness?

I don't see this as derailment, actually I'd say it's very in line with the thread topic. I direct you to my earlier post for a quick and dirty summary, but if you actually want to discuss this further and don't want to do it here feel free to PM me.

If she had said fuck everyone would have laughed and she would have been embarrassed for a few seconds before the game continued.

No one here is saying those words in Spanish aren't impactful, like you are now.

Final post (I'm going to get banned anyway so might as well explain myself).

What you are implying here is that I believe someone who says that word is not racist, or it is not a bad thing to say. Which is wrong, I've never said that. The only thing I've said is that I don't understand why it is such a big deal that it even shows up in the news, because where I live this never happens. Seriously, that's the only thing I've said. That in Europe this doesn't happen. That's it. Everything else it's just you assuming I'm a racist or that I don't care about racism just because I've said that.

If she had said fuck everyone would have laughed and she would have been embarrassed for a few seconds before the game continued.

I meant mostly American television, not common day-life stuff which you are probably right. This include religious stuff too.

So you were just wondering why it was bleeped on TV? You should have just said that sense you posts look a lot worse. Or is it because she's just supposed to blurt out words? You can't just drop the N-word, it shouldn't be something you say enough that you'd randomly blurt out in a game like this.

Yeah dude, why give a shit about using a racial slur with heavy racial attachment in front of a crowd filled with said race?

Damn new age crowd trying to be all equal and shit. lol social media.

/s

Everyone please watch this.

I can't handle all this cringe on my own.

EDIT: "Unintelligible"? Teacher on the left clearly says "Loyalty" there.

EDIT 2: "You heard right!" No, I didn't, because you bleeped it.

They also spelled it "Repect". What kind of a news station is this!?

Dude what. I live in Sweden and if you used the equivilent N-Word term here casually like that you get called the fuck out.

You literally said it isn't related to racism

You sure are posting like you're offended, and you not being a millennial makes it even worse (or more hilarious).

It was a direct, satirical response to the post in I quoted, from observing the situation. You are the one calling it "faux-offendedness" btw.

I guess the thing is we (now I'm talking about Spain, not Europe) don't have a racist word as "strong" as that. We do have racist words, mostly against arabs and a race I don't remember the name in English. But we don't have a past as... complicated as yours. When arabs came here centuries ago they made out with the people here so we are mixed, which I think helps.

When you are on TV you can say anything you want, literally. It won't be bleeped, it won't be a big deal no matter what it is: religion, royalty, racism, whatever. That's why I see it in a different way than you, it's a cultural thing.

We used to beep out brand names on the public channels tho.

I'm always amused when a presenter on radio or TV interviews an American, and the presenter uses a casual "fuck" in a sentence or something and the guest is like "WHAT?"

the video is kinda confusing and the OP is as well
can someone clear it up

the news video shows the young black woman cover her mouth and walking away did she say the word?

Most here agree the censorship is silly. They should just let us hear it if they wanted to do a news story on it. That said american race relations need help big time. It's a country founded on colonialism and slavery. Racism basically founded the country and it gets ugly a lot.

America has a different history since the majority of their slavery happened in domestically, while European countries kept most of their darker chapters in racial relations abroad in their colonies. If American society appear more sensitive about it, it's because they were confronted by the whole ordeal more directly. From their perspective, European countries are a bit callous on the matter, which I think isn't unreasonable considering the subject matter and how relatively recent it happened.

Either way, slurs are not really worth reclaiming when a large number of people who were directly oppressed by them are still alive. Trying to trivialise it as "drama" sounds a bit disrespectful to them. We can re-evaluate if we should de-Voldemort certain words in a couple more generations, and try to better society itself in the mean time.

It's not being associated with Honesty.
Guts is associated with Honesty.

The next word is the start of a new pair.
Hm, you're right. I wonder what the associated word is then.

Have we determined that the word was, in fact, not "Niggard"?

I'm not saying that's not a stupid word, but it does make this entire thread kind of redundant.

Dude what. I live in Sweden and if you used the equivilent N-Word term here casually like that you get called the fuck out.

Yeah, I don't get how someone from a country in Europe can assume that this valid for the entire continent. Something like this would probably end up on the news if someone was pushing for it in Norway as well (though it would probably be more likely in regards to a different minority).

That being said, parading such incidents on the news is something I find problematic. On one hand it sends the message that this type of language is not acceptable in modern society, on the other hand it often leads to major harassment campaigns against single individuals that can have consequences that far exceed any damage done. And circumstances also tend to get lost in the outrage (though I am not claiming that the person uttering the word had some good reason to do so, just as a general thing for these types of stories.)

It's strange for us Europeans because it's not common for the media to report on such issues unless some minorities get murdered. I'm part of the biggest minority here in Germany and even for me it's strange sometimes, because I'm not used to it. There is a similar word for my kind of people here (Kanake, it's not as bad as the n word though) and no one in the media would care if a teacher would have used that word and he wouldn't get fired too. So it seems unusual for us but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I mean it's good that the media cares at least a little bit about minorities over there and it shows that we Europeans have to work on our mentality. I would be glad if we had such media reports.

No one was upset that they censored it on television, so that clearly wasn't what you were talking about. Keep back pedaling though

On the other hand the n-word seems to be far more prevalent in US culture than the k-word ever was.
I cannot really see a teacher using the k-word in Germany. Or have you had that experience.
It's certainly a word I haven't heard being used since middle school...

We used to beep out brand names on the public channels tho.

Oh wait, that's true. You can piss off the Pope if you want, but don't you dare say a brand name on TV lol

Apparently you know more than I do what I was talking about, so please enlighten me.

My first comment here is me literally making fun of the TV program censoring the word.

Oh yeah, totally. As long as the school handles the situation in an appropriate manner it doesn't really have to be news.

How racist do you have to be that it only takes about 5 seconds of free-association before "nigger" pops out?

Now, how SUPER RACIST do you have to be to do that as a teacher in front of an auditorium full of people, where dropping that word is a death knell for your career?

Even David Duke was like "Damn lady chill out."
