Team Fortress 2 debunks myths about Xbox Live

No, I know some dedicated servers exist but I'm sure that's because the publisher has set them up. Although aren't EA publishing orange box for 360?

However for PC dedicated server its just as simple as getting the software on it and running it.

The horrendous reliability of the EA servers saw me dismiss them. It's hard enough here in Australia just to log into the EA servers, let alone get a game happening.

The game with FF would be pretty fucked up for a lot of classes. Demoman, soldier, HWG (especially), Pyro (also especially).

Game just wasn't designed with FF in mind. (devs words)

I don't think FF is a problem with the lack of accuracy on defult weapons causing a bunch of team kills - it's more being able to rocket jump other classes into places where it would be impossible to dislodge them from.

If you think of something like the building with the capture point at B in Gravelpit, where demomen and soldiers can get above the capture point and be tough to take out, imagine how that would play with a rocketboosted engineer putting a teleporter up there and letting the whole team get up to defend...

I didn't knew these myths existed. Thread should be called: My own personal misconceptions of XBL corrected.

You obviously don't read the right threads. This stuff has been spouted repeatedly, and not by me, so they aren't personal misconceptions.

I'm assuming you're pointing out the fact that all XBL is P2P?

That's not true. Some run a player-hosted server, whoever creates the room is actually running the host. This requires an asymmetrical connection with substantially more upload than download and the upload requirements actually grow exponentially as each player is added.

Halo 2 and 3 take it a step further by automatically (and transparently) choosing this host based on whoever has the best upload speed in the room.

As far as the low numbers of players right now, you have to consider all of the single player greatness that also comes with Orange Box. It's quite possible that loads of people own the game, but are playing through the hours and hours of single player nirvana that is also included.

Team Fortress will be the longevity part of the title. Most people are probably burning through the story and portal right now.

If the lag though is as bad as is stated, I'll still end up getting TF2 on Steam for PC. Is it available alone yet or do you have to get it in the bundle?

I have no problem getting the single player stuff on the 360 (especially since I don't have to connect online to Steam just to play it), then get the online game on PC.

My second multiplayer match in Halo 3, I was jumped by a 12 year old who decided to let me know:

1. My gamertag is faggy.
2. My uniform colors, faggy.
3. My playing ability, you guessed it, faggy.

He never stopped until the match was over. It was pretty awe inspiring to have someone be so dedicated to letting me have it for no reason.

And who says games aren't art.

This is the part that every single gaming company coming out with a multiplayer game needs to do.

Myth #2. You can't play games against the public on Live without putting up with assholes.

False. I've played several public games and everybody has been polite and cooperative. All the assholes must be playing Halo 3.

Great stuff! Long live Valve!

Um....yeah, they are.

I'll never forget the FANTASTIC last couple of days i had in CoD4 beta when all the retards were playing Halo 3.

It felt like first wave beta.

How do you let these guys get past the lobby screen without muting them? I haven't had a crappy experience yet. The voice of any douche never makes it past the first shot fired.

As for Team Fortress, the community so far seems pretty darn good. Unfortunately the game seems a little too spastic for my tastes. Love the style, but it's just hyper-fast. I'll probably pick it up again and try a support role instead. I was doing the best yesterday playing the noob-friendly spy.

Muting in Halo 3 doesn't even need you to stop gameplay or open the guide. When you die, scroll down, tap X

bye bye

Yeah, it's good. I've only had to mute three or four people for being intentionally annoying (and only maybe one or two for being legitimate assholes).

Most of the people I mute are because of annoying background noise (music, dysfunctional family), because even though they talk they're incomprehensible, or because they're mouth-breathers and I don't want to listen to them wheeze their way through a whole round.

you can also set voice to only your team or party AND you can't hear the other team in team games, downplaying the trash talking. that combined with insta-muting makes it pretty much a nonissue.

my theory is that alot of people who complain about xbl don't look back at themselves and see that they do the same thing everyone else does. you know who you are

LIVE lag is redicilous. I was playing some Halo 3 with my neighbour and it was vertualy unplayable. Havn't tried TF2, so should I get it for PS3 instead? (my PC sux ass.)

Why read threads when I played hundreds of Gears matches online and only encountered lame people a few times.

It's nothing compared to CS, only with voice instead of text.

To be honest, it was kind of funny at first. I was curious to see if he would tire himself out. By the end, I did mute him, and of course, reported him.

Sounds like you need a new ISP, Halo 3 is relatively lag free for me.

So, in (A), you state that there are no people playing anything else. In (B), you state that even fewer people will play TF2 in a month than the nigh-zero that do now. In (C), you state that people still play games for that are several months old.

Each one manages to tidily contradict the other. What exactly are you trying to say?

I might be late, but I will respond. What I mean is that most people are playing Halo, and it will be that way for a long time. You can find games in other online games, but it is hard. TF2 I see as something people will play waiting for CoD4 or GHIII.

I've found that the Halo community (probably thanks to its size) is far better than the Gears of War community it replaces.

Not saying there aren't any idiots, but:

1) Fewer racial slurs
2) Fewer whiners (people still get upset after they're killed, but they bitch less).
3) Much less aggressive taunting

...to name a few of the improvements. After Gears I was prepared for the worst (hadn't played Halo online outside of the beta), and I've been pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, but teabaggers are still a dime a dozen. I do it anyway.

Third-party PS3 games aren't coded any differently for networking than third-party 360 games.

How about you press X in matchmaking and select "prefer good connection"

i posted this in the official thread but ill post it here too. just played my first game on Live with 12 players and there was no lag. awesome game.... and i haven't even played half life 2 y et!

this talk of extreme lag in TF2 360 is worrying me. : (

It is actually pretty severe more oft than not... Which is a shame, because it's so much fun to disguise yourself as a heavy, have their medic heal you while watching you walk behind another of their teammates and knife them in the back :lol... It's the freeze you on the spot or teleport you around kinda... Not the stop and go either, which is even worse... Or, the host disconnects :(

I have severe worries for CoD4 as well... I know they said they did drastic changes to the code from the beta, I really hope so... I'd be very very upset if that game doesn't run well... I may consider picking up the PS3 version if I hear it runs better... It's a kick-ass game that deserves it...

Yea, this is as laggy as Saints Row if anyone has played that.

But when you do get a host who knows they can host a 16 player game... its PURE BLISS. This games multiplayer is way more fun than halo's. You can go in, have a team that actually does crap and not fuck around.

I bought it on steam too, but my darn iMac isn't letting me play it, keeps locking up my machine so hopefully that gets fixed soon. 16 players really shows when you play on the 24 or modded 32 player servers on pc.

Has the patch fixed the online freezing, goddarn it have reports of players freezing after a game is over. Plus people keep dropping out of games makes me a sad panda.

Are you saying that a certain upcoming shooter is using a different network gameplay model on the PS3 than the 360?

I don't suppose you could tell us anything...

Isn't the entire base of XBL peer to peer, whereas Sony's is more geared toward dedicated servers? I get that impression anyways.

The PS3 only uses dedicated servers if the dev/publisher feels like paying for them. You'd be surprised how many games on PS3 are using P2P.

XBL has 'peer to peer', player hosted (requires host to have high upload bandwidth), and dedicated publisher-hosted servers, though the only example I know of the latter is Battlefield 2.

Sony has the same, but they do have more dedicated publisher-hosted servers (see Sony-published titles i.e. Resistance, Motorstorm, Warhawk for examples).

If you are curious about any specific title and how it networks, use a good router and an app like WallWatcher or Link Logger, it isn't that hard to figure out which gaming network model a title is using. :)

When I get it ill host GAF games from my UofM t1 connection
