It's normal daily concurrent is actually much lower. Like around 16K.

Wow, really? I wonder how many of that 70k is new users versus people coming back into the fold for the update.

Understood. I just never heard of the Pyro referred to as a support class. Cool. My mind goes to Engie/Demo/Medic, but whatevs.

As for the other poster, you don't need to play as medic to learn maps. If following players around is the idea and core of your recommendation, you can do that with any class. Just stay around the other players and see how they play with their weapons.

I guess it's not really considered one, but when I started playing TF2, I played Pyro in a support type role, and I found it very rewarding.

Yea, getting spies, air blasting an uber, protecting guns, very important as support.

Agreed. It takes some time to get used to playing like that, but it's incredibly important for the team, and you don't have to be on the front lines getting kill after kill to be helpful.

Definitely, some of my most satisfying games have been denying a frustrated team as pyro. Great change of pace from my normal classes Spy/Soldier/Demo as well.

Wow it's gonna take me quite a while to catch up with all of these new weapons and stuff since I haven't played TF2 in about a year.

Can someone explain these "unremarkable" and "strange" weapons to me?

You can find "Strange" weapons in I think crates? You get a new title depending on how many kills you get.

http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/List_of_strange_weapon_ranks
"Those are the ranks that a Strange weapon can have. The rank of a Strange weapon changes after a certain number of kills were done with the weapon.
Ranks

Strange
Unremarkable - 10 kills
Scarcely Lethal - 30 kills
Mildly Menacing - 45 kills
Somewhat Threatening - 70 kills
Uncharitable - 100 kills
Notably Dangerous - 135 kills
Sufficiently Lethal
Truly Feared
Spectacularly Lethal
Gore-Spattered
Wicked Nasty
Positively Inhumane
Totally Ordinary
Face-Melting
Rage-Inducing
Server-Clearing
Epic
Legendary
Australian
Hale's Own "

Dang I want one now. Only a few can be strange right? Will have to wait for other crates to introduce more weapons?

They should make a blueprint to make your weapon strange. I like the kill counter/name changer idea.

It seems like #19 and beyond have Strange weapons in them, so far.
I think i'll buy keys for this as they are unobtainable any other way, so far.

Am I the only one who is against suggesting Medic for beginners? You'd be yelled whenever you don't heal someone so urgently. XD

IMO Soldier is the best beginner class.

Yes you can get all the new weapons through crafting or drops. Since you were away for such a long time you should also be getting 2-3 times the regular amount of drops, welcome back.

Sgt.Pepper said:
Of course. All the weapons are dropable, except for some few exceptions. Like the Headless Head Taker, Saxxy, Rocket/Sticky Jumper, and Golden Wrench.

Angry Fork said:
Almost all are available for free. The only ones that aren't are pre-order from other games stuff that don't affect gameplay, or a few cosmetic things here and there. There's also items that you can't get at all anymore and only certain people have like golden wrench.

demosthenes said:
Yes, you can also craft them.

Thanks for the replies...looking forward to getting back into it now...the last time I played heavily was during the Soldier/Demo update, and a little during the Engy update.

It's cool to see TF2 at the top of the Steam Stats page.

Another question...are items from certain game pre-orders not available in any form anymore? Liek the preorder items from Shogun or The Witcher 2?

I think a Scout would be a good first choice outside of flag matches. You'll die plenty but you're likely to get a grasp of the maps quicker and get a nice mix of close and mid range encounters.

IMO Scout is a little too twitch based for beginners. You also need to know where choke points and health packs are to be able to successfully flank/get behind the enemy and do damage without dying in 2 seconds.

If you come from fast paced games like Quake scout is a great option for a newbie. If you come from the much slower console fare soldier is my suggestion.

You're not wrong, but I played UT'99 for years and after 50 or 60 hours I'm still basically shit at scout, so I'm a little biased against it :3

Depends on the game. For the two you mentioned, I believe the hats can be crafted and drop, and I know the weapons can be crafted. The only promo weapons you can't get anymore are the Frying Pan (L4D2) and the Big Kill (Sam & Max). Hats are a bit more complicated, I'm not sure there. Since they introduced Genuine quality, promo items have been obtainable after the promo ends, I think in all cases but I'm not sure.

Scout has the speed and mobility but they're also fragile, so I dunno how effective they'd be with someone new to TF2. If you're coming from something like Quake your best bet when first starting is probably Soldier, Heavy or Sniper, since you can often just out-aim the opposition till you get used to the other aspects of TF2. If you're coming from Quake Live and have good railgun aim, you can wreck some shit with the Sniper.

So I have to say. The game kicks ass. Glad It went free to play. I always wanted to try it but just couldn't pull the trigger on it because I wasn't sure I'd like it.

Pyro is pretty dope for newbies if you play them smart.

:lol Given the numerous nerfs Pyro has gotten over the years + three methods (LOL PEE AND MILK AND WATER!) to extinguish flames to where "SURPRISE, ASSHOLES"/Pyro's main MO is nerfed? Not really.

Strange weapons are Valve's answer to regular weapon drops from crates. Getting a strange equalizer would certainly be less rage inducing than getting a regular equalizer from a crate.

Okay I'm out of weapons to craft, and I think I hit my drop cap, I only need

- New Spy Knife
- New Scout Pistol
- New Soldier Shovel
- Riding Crop
- Mantrads
- Booties
- Demosword
- Sniper sword
- Sniper rifle

Yeesh... looks like I'm stuck with what I have now until I can get some more stuff next week.
This is going to take forever to collect all the items (it took 100 items saved up for 4+ months to have enough to craft the items I have, and I got 3 in random drops)

Pyro still needs buff, but s/he's definitely much better than before.

Promo weapons are always available after the game they are promoting gets released.

Water has always been on the maps (and isn't on all of them), and pee and milk don't help much when you're a 125HP class getting a Backburner or Axetinguisher to the face. It's not as W+M1 as it was in the early days, but it's still easy to play.

I think people are misinterpreting "casual friendly" to mean "easy." It's not easy, it's still a competitive multiplayer shooter after all. Your experience wouldn't be any different in Call of Duty or Halo or anything else when you just jump in.
I never expected it to be easy, rarely any MP game is. But every time I have tried Team Fortress 2, now and before (have owned the game since Orange Box was released), it has felt like running headlong into a wall of lead and spikes with rattlesnakes entangled.

This is the game have made me felt like that, I have gotten along pretty well with other MP shooters like Halo, Brink, Rainbow Six and more, but this is the kicker one.

Right now I cant join a new servers because my game refuses to connect to Valves server, but I will hopefully soon give it a try once more.

It's now at 72,036, and it's still climbing. I wonder if it will keep these numbers up as the weeks pass by.
And a lot of people still aren't off work yet. It'll go up significantly tonight/this weekend.

Ok so I tried out coaching. The first time I volunteered to be a coach, it took about a minute and I was hooked up with a new player. The controls were confusing, but I helped him out and he seemed very grateful. However, all the other times have been horrible. Not because my students are bad, but because I either can't connect for some reason or they try to put me in a full server. I don't know if it's glitched because of the big update, but coaching seems kinda crummy.

To all the new people: best mode to start off in is Payload. Regardless of if you are attack or defense, you can head towards the outline of the cart (or follow the train tracks) so it's hard to get lost in the maps.
I would say the best mode for beginners would be King of the Hill since it's more or less just deathmatch on a static map with a singular objective in the middle.

With Payload you are constantly moving so learning the maps chokepoints while learning the characters will be a arduous task.
