Team Fortress 2 is now free to play forever

Is it boosting you for only a second ? What's the point ?
One soldier can help mobilize his team a lot faster than they would be able to proceed otherwise. It's not a huge bonus, but every second counts when you're trying to capture that first point and move your heavier classes up.

It's actually four seconds, the description is wrong (had to look this up on the wiki... it certainly FELT like more than 1 second). It helps more than you'd think. You can keep extending it, of course, if you're running in a pack with other teammates. And the buff extends to the person you hit, too, which makes for happy heavies and pyros.

But the best part? Bonus spy checking!

That seems way more usefull than the description made me believe. I understand why it can be usefull for Heavies

New player here.
This is really the first game I'd be playing on Steam where friends are necessary.
Screen name: RT_Boston

So I got the game and it seemed pretty fun in basic training, but whenever I click 'Start Playing' it just tells me that it's 'retrieving server information' and nothing happens. Clicking 'Browse Servers' brings me to a list of absolutely nothing.

Anybody know what the problem is?

I'm having the same problem. I don't think it's working for anybody right now.

There's been some bug with retrieving server information since the patch; I saw it on my own computer on Thursday and a friend's on Friday, in both cases it resolved itself over time. Try shutting TF2 down and restarting; if that doesn't help, restart Steam.

Boo. Guess I'll just go do something else in the meantime and see if it gets resolved.

I do this too. Flare Gun is my main weapon, Degreaser is used just to light people up and throw them back so I can get a good shot with the FG. I can often kill people before they even land from the compression blast.
This is exactly my strategy. Works so fucking well :D

You definitely haven't been on the GAF server while Borgnine or I were playing Soldier.

It boosts the speed of yourself and a teammate for 3-4 seconds, you can keep reapplying it, Heavies and Soldiers move around normal speed, everyone else starts to approach Scout speed, and Scouts and Heavies with GRU fly. (Note: GRU Heavies might actually just move at Scout speed. And Scouts can't actually fly (yet.))

I didn't pick up TF2 because at the time, my POS computer more than likely couldn't run it (I couldn't even run Portal very well).

I just bought a laptop over the weekend, and while it's mostly going to be used for my artwork and writing, I may just have to bite on this TF2 thing.

I've never played it, and heard awesome stuff about it.

I have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GS which came with my computer. I know it's not great in any way, but the website www.systemrequirementslab.com seems to think TF2 should run absolutely fine,http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1188395/lab.PNG .

I tried running the game again today and it did the same thing - ran beautifully for about half an hour and then suddenly died. I hope I can get this fixed, because I'm having a hell of a lot of fun with this when it works.

Oh, and the settings are all on high, but that's what's recommended for my system. I tried turning them all down but the same thing happened. When I first start the game, it runs perfectly, which is what I find so strange.

This is a bug that was introduced a couple of patches ago. I know because I have the same problem as you do and I only get those same hiccups within the last month. But for me, it doesn't crash the game, it recovers itself after ~10 seconds.

You can try turning multicore rendering off to see if that helps.

Helped me run it on my "netbook"...AMD e-350 with 1.6 GB RAM. I'm wondering if the amount of ram, or my processor speed (1.6ghz dual core) is the real bottleneck on this game. I'd like to increase the graphics if I can...
You are the MAN for ginving this site. I had some issue getting steam goign again after all this time but I got it downloaded. and it seems (seems) to run fine. I was only doing the training but it ran WAY better than I thought. I know online play will be different but I'm ready for it

HELP - I'm having a weird issue with my laptop touchpad and it's the same issue I had with minecraft. When I try to use my touchpad as the 'look' or right stick, it only moves for just a second then locks and I can't look anymore until I re-touch it. It makes it impossible to play and it's hard enough to use a touchpad to play a FPS. I'm having to map the controls to my DS3. It's fine but it's taking me so long to dial in the sensitivety.

Anyays, I'm primed and ready to FIGHT I haven't played TF since I had my grappling hook. EVERY SINGLE GAME SHOULD HAVE A GRAPPLING HOOK.

edit: I'm geting a tiny BT dongle tonight, has anyone ever tried to use a Ds3 with one?

So, I played it once more, got some serious Pyro action going. And finally, for the first time in over a year I unlocked my first item, adding to a total of 39 (half must be pre-order or achievment unlocks from other games, can't even remember me having so much when I quit).

Guess what I got?
A fucking code to unlock a hat in Rift....

Sure, this was a achievments related unlock, but still can't deny I felt a bit hurt.

The code is useless, but it is a pretty snazy gold ticket.

To those having problems with an empty server browser... you may be having problems with the server list flooding your router's NAT table. There's really no solution other than to try to restrict the rate of TF2's network traffic (there are tutorials on this somewhere on Steam Support's website) or to upgrade your router. What I do is just join people's games through the Steam friends list, then you never have to load the master server list.

lol.
Still, don't PA sell merchandise? So aren't they already doing the free to play (read) with cosmetic premium content (T-shirts/prints/whatnot)?

Where can I see how many kills I need to unlock something?

There are a few ways to get weapons:

1. Achievement milestones. At 10, 16, and 22 achievements as part of a class pack (including the milestone achievements, so it's really 10, 15, 20) you will get a specific weapon. These are the first three unlocks for each class.

2. Item drop. Every 30-70 minutes, you will receive an item drop, up to a maximum of about 10 hours per week. Unused hours of one week carry over to the next, for a total of 20 hours. You just have to be online and connected to a server for this to happen.

3. Crafting system. Most weapons not available through the achievement system are available through crafting. For example, a Scrap Metal and a Sandman can give you a Pain Train. See http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Crafting/ for the list of recipes. Basically every weapon with it's own stats except achievement milestone weapons and the two Jumper weapons are craftable.

4. Buy them! Using real dollars.

5. Trade for them! With other users.

6. Specific achievement/bonuses. Preorders of other games, gaining specific achievements in other games, etc, can unlock weapons/hats/misc items in TF2. Ones that have different stats are also available to craft (such as the two Rift weapons, Sun-On-A-Stick and Sharpened Volcano Fragment) but ones that are just reskins are only available through their promotion (such as the Iron Kurtain and the Frying Pan)

Note that other items have their own drop timers (crates are gained in addition to other drops, as are hats, and hats are super-rare).

Anybody notice a rise in bad players on their fav servers yet? I haven't really. Heard some people say it has gotten bad though. Thank god match making came out the same time this game went f2p. Really nice way of making it user friendly and keeping the nubs off all the good servers.

What game type lends itself to the most open style of play? By open style of play, I mean not having the majority of the fighting taking place at one location.

I've noticed it on some.

Almost all maps have major chokepoints that are sure to be full of people, though attack/defend maps like Gravelpit can spread things out a little bit by giving the attackers two separate goals, at least initially.
CTF can be that way behind enemy lines, but you usually have a band of pretty intense fighting between the bases.

Arena. If you like having more than one life per match, I'd say Payload Race is the next best bet.

Ok, so I'm probably one of many people that got TF2 because it was free. I've been playing a little to get the feel of all the classes. However, all the games I've been in are just a bunch of people running around not working together. Is there a GAF server or any specific server that people play on to work more as a team? I'm no where near good at this game yet, but after a little playing I'll get the hang of it. I imagine there's a lot of gaffers like me that just got TF2 and want to play with some other new players.

What game modes are you playing? I've jumped into matchmaking a few times and most of the new guys were doing a decent job of working together, especially on Payload maps.

Try payload maps. The level design and goals lead themselves to keeping the action around particular points in the map so teamwork tends to occur more naturally.

It varies. One server I was on had the usual gang of idiots (including me) playing, so it was business as usual. On another I was topping the charts as a Medic and doing much better than usual on my huntsman Sniper.

Best part is hearing the domination quotes in-game.
"Gotcha, ya spastic little gremlin!"

Penny Arcade hates TF2 (Tycho explicitly says so in the news post to that comic)?

When did this happen? When the game came out they wrote favorably about it and I don't recall them saying anything negative about the game at the time.

Risk Breaker said:
I'm sorry but... how do you do that exactly?

Bring down your console with tilda (the '~' button) and type:

Code:
rate XXXXX

Where XXXXX is the rate you want. I believe the default is 10,000 (without the comma) but servers that make heavy use of voice chat, custom sounds and soundtracks, etc recommend 90,000. Be careful when setting the rate, though - too low and your system will lag up, too high and your network connection has a hard time accepting that much data.

If you just want to see what the current rate is set to, simply type 'rate' in the console with no following number and hit enter.

They probably don't play on PC/OSX.

Well, I only play on the Gaf server, so only slightly. Use the normal matchmaking though, and the teams are horrible.

I think Tycho has said that he hates shooting people in shooting games, and thus gravitated towards the Medic. TF2 is probably the best game if you want to help your team win rather than just shoot people to win, so I dunno why he would use the phrase "hate."
