Steam said:
Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Team Fortress 2

Fixed Ambassador not using hitboxes to trace against players. It now works like all other bullet-firing weapons in the game

Fixed Ambassador shooting through gates

Fixed Ambassador not critting during the round win period

Fixed control point not being named correctly on Arena Sawmill

Fixed cloaked Spies being able to taunt attack

Fixed Spy feign death not being reflected in scoreboard

Fixed Jarate effect on DX8 machines

Fixed rare crash in Spy "A Cut Above" achievement

Fixed the backpack icon appearing over the "Could not connect to Steam" message in the client inventory

Fixed German localization string for respawning players showing %1

Sad, no more overpowered ambassador. :( Good to see they fixed the jarate problem and spy taunt attacking.

That explains the near-empty server list when I hopped on just now... yea, glad they fixed the most egregious bugs right out of the gate.

I actually want my money back now, Valve.
You didn't say you were gonna turn this game into a menu based spreadsheet nightmare of RPG grind and trade, yet already I have to plow through menu upon menu to select a new gun. That's even before you'll put in a trading system. Great, I wonder how many more crappy menus that will make me constantly browse.

You don't have the right to just completely change a game you already sold to me.

BMW can't replace the engine in my car because the designer says that's more fitting
There's also a guy who made a thread accusing Valve of turning TF2 in a "Socialist state" where "everybody shares the wealth" and that Valve is contributing to the lack of people working hard in society.

i must say it is kinda demoralizing to play for an hour and not unlock anything if the main reason you are playing is to unlock stuff. Active players is always highest around these sort of patch releases because people want to try out the new content. Having to rely entirely on luck just to have the experiences (aka the only reason they are playing) seems illadvised.

I'm getting "Server is enforcing consistency for this file: water_dx80.pcf" all the time and haven't been able to play it yet. Any tips?

Same thing is going on with me. WTF? Consistency check did nothing. I'm dying over here.

the cloak and dagger can lead to some nice things.

For example badwater 18-0 on defence, by standing cloaked on the ledge above the tunnel and following people up the ramp, backstab, back to the ledge cloaked and wait. :lol

Well switching to a wired network fixed the problem.

I'd rather just run a cable back and forth between my laptop and 360 than deal with trying to figure out why vista fucks up my ping times every 30 seconds.

Screw acheivement unlocking. Just started playing the PC version for the first time and already have some unlocks. I would rather not waste my time going through a list of acheivements and rather just play to enjoy it.

Awesome change

Has anyone unlocked/seen the hats worn in game?

Someone a few pages earlier got a football helmate for their Heavy. I forget how the poster was. Fireblend maybe?

As I said while with my friends reading the latest blog post:

"I knew it! I knew it was based on time! There were just bugs!"

Sorry, I don't get to be right often.

I gotta say, I'm becoming more and more supportive of this change. Sure, there's been a bump in spies and snipers, but there's still a lot of other classes running around as well. I'm not worrying about achievements as nearly as much. Tweak the drops and get the weapon trading in, and I think this will be a big positive.

The Cloak and Dagger watch is seriously fucking awesome, it's made playing Spy a lot more enjoyable for me. I really enjoy sneaking into the enemy base slowly and using every spot to my advantage, observing the enemy team and giving no hint of my existence before I take an opportunistic backstab or sapper deploy. Making it deep into enemy territory without anybody knowing anything is half the fun!

Now that I know the item drop rate is bugged (Valve said so themselves, it's not meant to be this low), I feel more at ease with the new system since it did indeed stop achievement farming and it IS successful at making the game entertaining for newer players.

And yes, the Clock & Dagger is awesome. You made me want to go online and use it some more.

As much as I"m bitching about this, I'll admit this is a better system for gameplay. System does need to be tweaked and fixed though, and quickly.

I would rather some logic to it besides "Logged in to TF2." Actual drops would make sense to me. I think that's probably what they first intended to do, but they didn't have it ready for this update.

Besides the Cloak and Dagger, the only new item I've gotten is the Huntsman, which I love. I'm not much of a match for other Snipers, but it's just way too much fun.

The new cloaking tools were nice, and they made a lot of fixes to the current disguise system, but it feels like the Spy kind of got shafted for his update. Here we were wondering what sort of new and clever things they were going to do with the knife, or the disguise kit, or the sappers... and they didn't. Maybe they're saving those back for a Spy vs. Engineer update, but other than the two watches, the Spy just got a better revolver, that had an awful lot of glitches for a fairly basic gun. Maybe they're going to sneak out more weapons later on, the Sniper didn't get a Melee replacement either after all, but the Dead Ringer is probably the only thing unique about the Spy's update, and that's kind of a shame.

I would -not- complain about the spy updates. The gun got fixed because it was too powerful, but everything else (including all the disguise boosts) made the spy a LOT better than it already was, and it was already good. The sniper didn't get much of a boost, but that's probably for the best since it was already decent.

I think they still haven't made anything overpowered now that the ambassador is better (though it could still be made less accurate I imagine), so that's a good thing. I want some crazy overpowered engineer boosts eventually though...it's one of the most important but most boring jobs to do, and everybody hates you and tries to break your stuff all game. :lol Plus I'm an engineer in real life...

I disagree. Spy got some tools that changes the way he plays, or at least Clock & Dagger does. 'Sides, Spy got a bunch of significant buffs that aren't unlockable weapon related as well, such as having disguises that show unlocked weapons, names, and spy masks, and being able to take enemy teleporters, and consider that he got buffed before, it's icing on the cake that he is much better than he used to be.

At this point they should just accept that their system is screwed up and unlock all the new weapons for everyone to use.

They can work on their drop system until the next class update and make sure it fucking works before implementing it.

I'd be perfectly ok with that. I don't mind the idea of the drop system, I have a problem with playing for 6 hours and getting nothing. I'm also interested in what they're going to do in order to "Give players a method to influence the system so they can work directly toward getting specific items."

The drop system is pretty stupid. I'm just walking along and randomly it says "Slavik found: Bonk Energy Drink"...

Did I? I didn't see anything except that message that would give me any reason to think I'd found something. There wasn't anything that I actually found or did that had anything to do with what happened.

They should just unlock everything for everyone from the get go. I can't see any good fix for this system.

A good fix would be to actually make the item obtaining rates REASONABLE, which Valve admits they are not, and they consider it a bug.

I don't mind playing normally to get items and weapons. That's how the game should be played. I mind the fact that the drop rate is bugged and that it takes far too long (and you're not even guaranteed something you want).

A buttload of content and a trading system is the only legitimate way to salvage it.

I think it can work, but this was an insanely retarded and broken way to roll it out. Hyping new content for two weeks only to distribute it to people by dice roll was bound to piss people off. Once there are a legitimately large number of potential drops and we can trade what we don't want for what we do it could be a very fun little side-system to keep people playing. In the mean time, I'm stuck with two backburners and two KGBs until the dice roll my way and I get something I can actually use.

I will say, that while it's not overpowered and you'll almost certainly lose against a sniper with the regular rifle, the bow is probably my favorite part of the entire update. I'm still bad at using the dead ringer, and I'll probably think the cloak and dagger is fun to play around with if I ever get it. But the bow is just plain fun. :D Now if I only get the hang of shooting and running down...

Huntsman arrows on a Heavy are really funny.

On plr_pipeline: I really like it. It's really hectic on all maps all the time, and I like that since I normally play scout a lot. The maps are well designed and while I still have to learn the layout of some areas for when I play a Spy, they seem pretty easy to remember.

On droprates: I hate my luck. Only 1 drop (Sandman) in over 10 hours of playing.

is there any pattern to unlocks yet?

I got the other healing gun for medic and the jar of pee, both random in the 3 hours I played since it updated.

Got Cloak and Dagger, some new kinda heavy gloves, Backburner and Huntsman in that order after about 4 hours. Dunno how I got them, but I did. Huntsman is a lot of fun to use, really satisfying to get a kill with it, really powerful. Arrows fly too slowly and with too much of a curve if you're ever in close combat, or at medium range and the attacker notices you, they can dodge the arrow very easily. And I'm starting to think Jarate's blckout effect lasts a bit too long.

I'm not going to read through the last many pages of this thread from the last day, but I'll say this:

The new unlocking system is fucking awesome, and :lol @ all the people just now coming out of the woodwork trying to pretend that "no one was complaining about the achievements before!!!"

You unlock shit by playing the game normally. No weird goals, no weird techniques. Just play Team Fortress 2, and you get new shit. Perfect. Awesome. Yes, there's obviously a glitch right now where it takes too long to get things, but that's a side-effect, not intentional.

Kudos to Valve for once again doing things right and ignoring the incredibly loud (and extremely annoying) tiny minority.

Managed to unlock the Ambassador and a second Axtinguisher. You have to be really accurate to make good use of the Ambassador, and make your first shot count - I almost prefer the normal revolver at this point since I'm not THAT great at aiming. :lol

It feels like the ambassador is great for ranged sneak attacks and long range fighting, while the revolver seems better suited to defending yourself after being found out. I gotta get more practice in with the new weapon...

They didn't do things right. The right way is to just give the new weapons, but they want to restrict them in some way and reward players, of which this system is close to the worst way to do it.

Then...how would you know?

And I read the last blog post as they fixed the bug, and now it's operating as it is supposed to.

The entire point of gradual unlocks is to not overwhelm people. Especially the incredibly likely vast majority of people who don't have many unlocks at all thanks to the old achievement system.

Gradual unlocks = people try things out, one at a time, instead of switching between all the new stuff and quickly ignoring it because it might not seem helpful at first.

Gradual unlocks + randomization + ability for an average player to easily unlock everything in a couple weeks = great combination to avoid overwhelming more casual players while still giving the stuff to hardcore players quickly.

Then...how would you know?
Because I've read the same type of bitching everywhere else so was referring to them, and the inevitable people who were doing the same here.

I really wish they'd included both options and had milestones for classes. I got 13 spy achievements, so under the old system, that would be a new item. With the drop system instead I've gotten absolute shit I don't want.

So I'm thinking of picking up The Orange Box for PS3 (my PC sucks). Is TF2 maintained at all on PS3? Are all of these updates on the PS3 version?

None of these updates are in the PS3 version. In fact, I don't believe it has been patched since the game's release. I don't know what the community is like there either.

Orange Box is fantastic regardless, but I wouldn't expect much from PS3 TF2.

No, it's not perfect, and you just ignored the legitimate, clearly-reasoned responses from people on here who have issuess with the way it works. But I guess it's your right to ignore logic and declare by fiat. :P
