Team Fortress 2: The Über Update

Tiny cute little Pyro.

I really hope the engy stuff is the Telsa set from the Polycount contest. That set had a great visual vibe to it, and I hope it happens.

Plus if the supposed leaked icons are any indication (if they're real), that's what we'll see... I hope.

The new flare gun can only mini-crit, which to me seems like a pretty big trade off. But that jumping thing just seem so much more fun.

Obviously the engineer is going to get something tomorrow.

I would think tomorrow would be all about the medic (last day of update + meet the medic). Maybe engi will get something small.

Nah, it becomes significantly harder to kill people with flares without crits, which is why the flare gun was buffed from granting minicrits to granting full critical hits on inflamed players.

As it is now, you have to land at least 2 to endanger the lives of most classes you meet with the Flare Gun (initial flare + 90 dmg for the 2nd), whereas you'll have to land 3 to achieve the same effect with the Detonator (initial flare + 45 dmg [2x]). Heavies tend to require no less than 3 with the Flare Gun (initial flare + 90 dmg [2x]), and accordingly will require 5 with the Detonator to match that damage (initial flare + 45 dmg [4x]). And you have to keep hitting that player while the afterburn is active in order to crit or minicrit.

Not impossible, but you're not going to be killing many Heavies this way, and most other classes have twice the chance at survival compared to if you were wielding the standard Flare Gun. I'm definitely excited to get my paws on the Detonator, but it isn't an upgrade in any meaningful sense of the word (assuming they go with the beta limitations, which seems likely). I'll definitely be breaking out the standard Flare Gun when I need stopping power more than the additional pathways and control the Detonator makes available to me.

It's a pretty sweet item.
Yeah it is, but I would have at least like a new flamethrower as well after seeing the numerous items the other classes are getting (except Engineer tee hee)

Yeah, the Detonator harkens back to the Flare Gun's original role of pure harassment, as it means you either harass now by sneaking to an alternate route (e.g. on top of their head), or you just set them on fire from afar and look sad as you probably can't kill them now.

The nice thing about the burst, though, is the fact that you can use it to set multiple people on fire. So now when I'm spamming flares because the other team is taking too long to get into my flame range, I can make more of them panic at once.

Oh crap, I just realized this update is again one that makes the Medic's life more of a living hell with all the people that will be crying because they're on fire. If the alt-fire causes any and everyone in its radius to take minicrits if they're on fire, the weapon effectively has the most damage potential given to it despite trading away the killing power.

This also encourages the use of the Backscratcher, for me.

I probably won't be on until just before or just after the update starts tonight (summer classes), but I wanted to mention one thing about the Quick Fix (assuming it gets in).

The heal speed of its uber is strong enough that it's difficult for most classes to take out either the healed person, or the Medic. Additionally, because it heals so much faster rather than just provide invincibility, it's much easier to keep multiple people alive in a multi-uber than it is with the regular invincibility uber (where you could not swap in time, or you're swapping too much to get even two people out of the red at once). That's what makes it so powerful to me.

Quicky > Uber > Kritz > Quicky. Unlike the Kritz, this is practically designed to beat the Uber, and at the same time gives the Kritz even more use (not like any medic on the GAF server needs an extra reason to use the Kritz).

OMG I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING....WE'RE GETTING A MEET THE MEDIC VIDEO TONIGHT!

or am I mistaken? =(

No, I think you're right. If Valve aren't lying about leaving the Engineer out of the update, the Medic is the only one left. I wouldn't put it past them to tease the shit out of it and update at a totally different time from the previous ones; but it'll most likely come tonight.

I'm assuming four or five simultaneous sticky bombs would still kill those charged with it though?

Super-excited for the Detonator.

It just amazes me that if you have the Degreaser/Detonator/Powerjack and the Attendant equipped, you have +10% speed (still slower then 3 head Demo and 80 HP Soldier) but you also have 10% bullet and 20% explosive vulnerability. :/

How are you going to launch yourself at a sentry? That seems like trying to rocketjump into a sentry. Even heavies, who presumably weigh 3,000 pounds, go FLYING if a sentry rocket touches them and they're in the air.

You're complaining about the pyro finally potentially getting a buff? Did you see they even PREEMPTIVELY buffed the new demo set because they felt pyros were too powerful against that particular optional set?

So relax, chances are that even a new pyro weapon might end up nerfed if it's good. :P

"Well my BLU brothers, we'll lose this Payload or A/D round but at least I'll manage to decloak some spies maybe."

Obviously it would be optional and situational. Also, if there were more than one engy it could be extremely useful if one opted for spy paper and the other a tele.

EDIT: Ah, I meant it would de-disguise spies. was late when typing.

The description on that youtube video says the Beta version of the Detonator adds more vulnerability to explosions--Never sure if that's only when you have it out, or just equipped though.
It used to be +25% vulnerability, but they changed it to 25% self-vulnerability. basically you take more damage from the flare that you use to jump and that's it.

Detonator uses the old flare gun crit attributes. It mini crits burning players at close range, but crits them at long range. So at long distance it's still just as good as the flare and at short distance you can use your flare jumping to get in close and use your flamethrower.

The nice thing about the burst, though, is the fact that you can use it to set multiple people on fire. So now when I'm spamming flares because the other team is taking too long to get into my flame range, I can make more of them panic at once.

The manual explosion damage doesn't do crits or minicrits. It does basically no damage (dealt like 5 damage last time I tried it), it's just useful for setting a group of people on fire at once from a distance. As far as I'm concerned the detonator is a straight upgrade to the flare gun, which is why I expected them to just change the flare gun's stats rather than making it a whole new weapon.

While a lot of the new weapons look like fun, I really only see two that I'm salivating over. The detonator is a must and the soda popper may be worth it, depending on charge time. I'm going to get that scout mask and paint it black along with some black essential accessories.

EmCeeGramr said:
Then they don't have the shoes for turning and if they charge you can just get out of the way and shoot them. If they don't charge then they're just a demoman with no stickies, i.e. a bad demoman.
That bullshit has some crazy reach. No way. This is why I airblast like crazy.

Oh man, the new flaregun looks awesome. Reinstalling TF2 today for sure. I haven't played in a long while, so this should be fun.
you mean you had the nerve to UNINSTALL Team Fortress 2?

Is this real life???

:)

Is anyone here pumped enough to buy one of the sets at the update's launch?
Depends on the new Engy items, because obviously the Pyro update about the engy was trollolololol.
Actually, I have a bunch of materials saved up, so if there's something I really want but can't craft, yeah, i'll probably buy it.
I feel terrible buying DLC sometimes, but, I think this would be a good time...
