Team Ninja head fancies a Dead or Alive X Virtua Fighter crossover

VF is too complicated. DOA isn't complicated enough.

Someone should make a 3D fighter that hits the middle ground. It'd be better than either of those two games and it would outsell them both as a result.

we could call it... "Tekken"

There's a difference between complicated and complex, and Tekken lies more with the former than VF. VF has a bunch of special moves and button combinations that require practice and memorization to pull off with ease—but the game's have a simple 3-button config that makes it simple and easy to learn, so long as you have the patience and concentration to learn. Tekken requires a lot more control dexterity and improvisation, and things can get tangled quite quickly. And DOA is something of a joke these days, though it wasn't ever as good as either of the last two heavyweights.

Would DOA V VF work out well? Countering and brand image are two big roadblocks of note, but their similar levels of kung-fu panache, defensive play, and button configuration make things quite easy to switch. I could see this working quite well, better and more practical than VF V T from a certain position.

Eww, why the fuck would anyone want this? VF has a unique, complex system, so a crossover with DOA would mean either a. DOA characters being adapted to the VF system, or b. watering down VF. Might as well make a Primal Rage/Virtua Fighter crossover.

Agreed with The Take Out Bandit. Who gives a shit about stories in fighting games? Just let us fight. Might as well be talking about stories in porn.

The only good thing this thread is making me wonder is whether or not Beach Spikers was any good.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=227482 - Just answered my own question. Time to buy.

Option A wouldn't be too bad. DOA has some characters that could be fun in VF's system.

Option B seems a lot more likely though :/

Fighters Megamix managed to marry the Virtua Fighter style with the much faster Fighting Vipers characters in a way that was entertaining.

I don't think I like all these cross overs though, even if Virtua Fighter and DOA are my two favourite fighters. It'd have to be done by both Itagaki and Yu Suzuki for me to feel comfortable with the idea.

(which will obviously never happen now)

So who would be the end boss? Dural? Alpha? Omega? Raidou? Tengu?

Come to think of it Dural and Alpha are the same character. The VF influence shows pretty clear in that nod from 4.

VF done by Team Ninja would be a trick from what I'm seeing. Just check out the move list and combo mechanics listed here for VF.
Its pretty enormous and intricate on both the system and the per character move lists. This could be a pretty monumental task. A whole new combat system middle ground would need to be adapted for these two to square off.

I can't say that these two series are IMO big enough names or have the nostalgia factor or rivalry between them to work like other recently discussed potential fighting crossovers.

But that may just be me not liking 3D fighting games.

I want to see this the more I think about it. Heres the roster you'd be looking at for something like this.

Has me hyped.

Of all the fighting game franchises DOA can crossover with, Virtua Fighter seems like kind of a boring choice. At the same time it's actually not a bad fit, in regards to mechanics and power level and stuff.

And yeah, we're way overdue on a Fighters Megamix 2. I was real surprised when we didn't get one that had the the VF3, Last Bronx and Fighting Vipers 2 characters. Wasted opportunity I think.

Truth. Even so, I just think that Sega needs to invest in a "Sega All Stars" fighting game, made by AM2.

Virtua Fighter may never crack the mainstream, but a new fighter that compiles all that is good about Sega's past and present? I would love to see that happen. Plus, I would love to see AM2 experiment and try different fighting games again.

I would like to see this happen... VF with a more over the top style.

could be the thing to give the virtua fighter series a shot in the arm in the arcades.

but a sega all stars fighting game would be dope to see... i'd prefer that over a doa vs. vf

A "Sega All Stars" fighter would depend on the actual direction. The only thing I'd demand that VF5 be the base for both games. I'm also in the camp that would love the split of a Fighters Megamix 2 and a Sonic and Sega the Fighters 2. FM2 would be more like VF in execution and the other would be a light version of that. A split like this would make sure that more representatives from more games make it. Have a couple of characters be in both games but have lots of roster exclusives for each game too. The idea of Axel Stone and Sketch Turner playable in a fighter makes me feel good.

No we couldn't.

I'm no longer paying the Microsoft online gaming tax for my 360. I'm just not stupid enough to believe in that placebo effect. LOL

PS3 version I'm going to need to brush up on. Barely touched 5 due to the crap training mode.

I think your case of not paying for Live is more of a foreveralone.gif than the (agreed upon) placebo of Live being better than PSN for online play.

But... come VF5FS... we WILL throw down.

Ha!

More like forever stingy.

I have friends on live, but I have friends on PSN too and I don't need to pay an online play tax to interact with them. That's another Live meme I don't get "its where my friends are".

Okay then Facebook generation.

One good IRL friend is better than 100 random jagoffs.

I was going to post this in the VF5 FS history thread, but I think one of the problems Sega have had with VF is that the way they maintain and update the game for the arcades hasn't been compatible with the nature of releasing retail products for a home console.

If somebody walks into an arcade and sees VF5FS when last week they only had VF5R they pump their money in same as always and the competition in that arcade is on the same playing field, there's little difference to the player. But it's harder to justify continually buying updates in a home console port, even as DLC and it risks fracturing the userbase and turning away the havenots.

With no arcade scene in the west to speak of, I think Sega does need to find a way to keep VF in the news, so to speak. I was going to suggest another Fighter's Megamix, but a crossover with DoA could be a way for them to keep VF in the spotlight and experiment with new ideas, without risking the integrity of the core series.

How do you it, simple:

Mandatory free patching+ DLC items. It works.

Yeah, weren't Tekken and VF going to do a thing like 10 years ago?

Not sure if you got an answer, but I think circa 2005 or something people from within Namco mentioned wanting to do a crossover with Virtua Fighter and I don't think Sega ever publicly responded. Doubt they will with this either.

VF GAF better be majority PSN once FS hits. I sold my 360 two years ago.

I suspect many of the better players will be on 360 due to VF5, but PS3 will be well represented. Besides, VF5 sold so terribly that it may not matter much- this will sell much better (VF5 was a VF4Evo-esque tutorial on how to make your game not sell or make a profit)

It was never a cross over game deal. They just agreed to share the advertisement on the newspaper:

Nah, at one point the Harada said he wanted to do it:

“The truth is that I have been working to fulfill this dream from over ten years ago,” Harada replied, when asked if such a game could happen. “There were several occasions on which it came close to realization. Opinions may vary, but I have wanted to do this for a long time. Therefore, the chance is not zero. It is possible. However, there would be many difficulties during actual development. First off, which team would develop it? I have some ideas for the controls and fighting system. Some parts have even been tested. It’s really up to the fans and whether they want it. If you have opinions about this, please send them to me!”

He was talking about a crossover game with VF, I couldn't find much coverage on the story since it was around 2005-2006, I found these two stories with a quick google search, the Seganerds archive (here) and here's a google translated interview where he lets on the same thing.

Suzaki mentions it in a 2007 interview with IGN too:

IGN: On a totally unrelated note, Katsuhiro Harada and yourself acknowledged several years ago that a "Tekken vs. Virtua Fighter" game was something you'd like to do one day. What are the chances of us ever seeing that?

Suzaki: I had the opportunity to speak with the director of Virtual Fighter on many occasions in the past and actually talk of collaboration came up again recently. Being from the same industry, this is something we definitely would like to try at least once. Looking at it from another perspective, we began to realize that it would actually be more difficult to make this happen than we first thought. More than anything, we believe this decision greatly lies in our fans. So, we would actually like to ask for our fans' opinion on this.

I'd be so down for this.

From Virtua Fighter:
-Gameplay engine
-Customization suite

From Dead or Alive:
-Environment interaction
-Universal parry similar to DOA1 (tighter window)
-Universal advanced holds (lower damage and tighter window)
-Ground hit system
-Presentation
