Microsoft shrinks Kinect into a $399 cloud-powered PC peripheral

It’s for developers to build AI algorithms

Kinect originally debuted as an Xbox 360 accessory for motion sensing so you could control games with your hands or body. While it was a successful console accessory initially, its bundling and lack of games with the Xbox One forced Microsoft to rethink its entire approach to Kinect. Microsoft is now packaging up all of its impressive work with Kinect into a tiny sensor that it’s hoping businesses will now pick up and use.

Dubbed the Azure Kinect Developer Kit (DK), the PC peripheral includes Microsoft’s latest AI sensors like the time-of-flight depth sensor in the HoloLens 2, and a 7-microphone array for computer vision and speech purposes. It also includes a 12-megapixel RGB camera and a 1-megapixel depth camera. Developers were already using Kinect sensors for research, apps, and many other alternative uses, and this smaller sensor should open Kinect up to even more uses.

KINECT WILL NOW BE POWERED BY AZURE CLOUD COMPUTE
Microsoft’s big push here is that Kinect will be powered by the power of the cloud, and used for AI purposes. That will allow developers to use less power in potential applications, and use AI on depth images to deploy AI algorithms on smaller networks. The sensor itself can be used on its own, or paired with other Azure Kinect sensors to create a 3D map of a room.

It’s early days for this cloud-powered Kinect sensor, but Microsoft already has a partner using it in healthcare. Ocuvera is using the Azure Kinect sensor to stop patients from falling in hospitals. With a combination of AI algorithms, the sensor can determine if a patient is about to fall and alert a nurse before the fall takes place.

Microsoft is making the Azure Kinect DK available for preorder today for $399, and it will be available in the US and China initially.

Honestly, the bigger news is that Unreal Engine will support HoloLens. Not that you're about to play Fortnite on a HoloLens 2, but Epic is clearly thinking about the long haul.

Why did I come in here expecting intelligent conversation. Hopefully theres a Reset Era thread sheesh

This place is becoming shameful lately I'm starting to think people have a goal of just bringing it down more & more everyday until it's nothing left.

Seriously, there is like 5 hardcore MS fanboys spamming this site lately, all the while claiming GAF is Sony biased and out to trash Xbox.

Its not just this site, its the whole interwebs. Way past the paid astro turfing and paid advertising disguised as opinion articles back in the 2013 days.

I wouldn't take this thread as an example of how GAF is as a whole.

If you want to have this thread to be more searchable by search bots and other users, consider changing the OP to Azure Kinect and then some subtitle to denote what this in particular is for.

Amazon also has a deep learning camera powered by the cloud.

I wonder how they compare, considering Microsoft has extensive experience with this kind of tech.

Also, it could be speculated that this kinect might work with Next Box. Not saying it's a good idea but who knows.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
The Kinect is one of the worst disappointments. I bought one for the Xbox 360 hoping Microsoft would launch Crimson Dragon for it. Then I owned one automatically for the Xbox One. Crimson Dragon turned out being awful when played with Kinect controls on the XB1 and the cost of material of including one with every XB1 hampered the GPU of that machine.

Microsoft failed with motion controls. No other way to put it.

Yet original XB360 Kinect was one of the best selling devices of all time(at the time), so hardly a failure. Also this device is next generation for developers, not a gaming peripheral. Where do you get off slagging it?

Well, I understand that the Kinect now is a research tool that perhaps is advancing humanity. However, as a gaming device it has not pushed a game to make it a must buy and like I mentioned, it resulted in a worse console for XB1 owners.

I still have hope for them to figure out Kinect. They gave up way too early on it and may have released it too early honestly. Under a more powerful machine and processor Kinect with the right tweaks could actually work if they can make it affordable.

This is for deep / machine learning - just like Amazons AWS deep lense camera. These things are gonna be very common to spy on all of you and do image profiling.
