G4 was amazing pre-merger at the time. Had zero interest in any of the non-gaming Techtv shows. The merger ruined G4.
Both networks were better off seperate. Too bad Comcast wanted to off TechTV. I'm not sure I have any proof, but I'm pretty certain they bought TechTV up just to kill it. Of course they consistently said "Hey look, it'll be better together guys!" Meanwhile, on the first day, they immediately fired the vast majority of TechTV's staff and those who remained (mostly just X-play) they demanded they move with them to G4's LA offices (TechTV was San Francisco based).
Once they merged, they got rid of a lot of the good shows until eventually they just got rid of any remnants of TechTV. Then, for whatever reason, they just turned it into a repository for COPS, movies nobody else wanted and other crappy reality programs. To this day, I'm continuously confused as to what possibly happened at those executive board meetings. Then again, I'm confused similarly about what's happening to Cartoon Network. It feels like it is just going down the same path (look at what they did to Boomerang and then subsequently are now doing to the main channel).
There was a delightful golden era of time around 2002-2007ish that I will never forget and I just hope someday we could get back. With broadband, our area in Maryland started getting digital cable. With that, we got (amongst others) TechTV, G4, Toon Disney, Boomerang, Nick GAS (Games and Sports for Kids. Don't let the name fool you though, it was a repository for them to air constant reruns of their old game shows and some assorted Nicktoons), etc. It was brilliant and I miss it constantly. Late nights in summer I could watch Anime on TechTV and Adult Swim, tech shows, Robot Wars, Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, old gameshows like Double Dare, Nick Arcade and Legends of the Hidden temple, Darkwing Duck. It was incredible.
I know this post has gone long but I was incredibly upset when G4 and TechTV merged, and thus most of the channels I mentioned are defunct, gone or being mishandled (see: Boomerang). TV now just doesn't feel nearly as varied as some of the experimental stuff we were seeing at that time.
