Ted Cruz on Monday pledged to make the presidential election a “referendum” on the U.S. Supreme Court, ramping up efforts to make that issue one more increasingly personal point of contention with Donald Trump, his biggest rival here ahead of the South Carolina primary.

“The one person Donald has pointed to as a potential Supreme Court nominee is his sister,” Cruz told reporters here Monday, though Trump opened Saturday night’s debate by name-checking federal judges Bill Pryor and Diane Sykes. “Now, it’s good to stand with your sister. But Donald’s sister was a Bill Clinton-appointed federal appellate judge who’s a radical pro-abortion extremist.”

He continued: “Donald said his extreme, abortion-supporting sister would make a terrific Supreme Court Justice. If the people of South Carolina care about their constitutional rights, we’re one justice away from the Supreme Court writing the Second Amendment out of the Bill of Rights.”

Trump’s sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, is a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Trump said Sunday that he was kidding when he last year mentioned her as a possible Supreme Court Justice.

But that didn’t keep Cruz from casting doubts on Trump’s judgment when it comes to picking Supreme Court justices, both when speaking to reporters and during a Monday rally during Cruz’s first full day of campaign events following the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

“A candidate who has spent 60 years of his life being very, very pro-choice and defending partial-birth abortion is not the candidate you can trust to appoint principled constitutionalists,” Cruz said, taking aim at Trump as part of his broader efforts to paint Trump as a longtime liberal out-of-step with the deeply conservative and religious electorate here.

"If the people of South Carolina care about their constitutional rights, we’re one justice away from the Supreme Court writing the Second Amendment out of the Bill of Rights.”

Man, he makes this sound like a bad thing.

Trump calls out Cruz for constant lies.

Cruz responds with a lie that is not only trivially easy to check, but that he 100% knows is a lie because he was literally standing right next to him when Trump talked about two potential nominees.

When did Trump actually say this?

This is just more Cruz lies, no?

Trump never mentioned his sister for the position. He was asked after the debate about her getting the job if he were president and he basically tried to get away from that question as quickly as possible. Cruz is a liar.

Such a ridiculous statement. Because yes, SCOTUS justices rewrite the constitution erryday.

What's the relation between being a "radical pro-abortion extremist" and the second amendment? I frankly don't get it.

I cannot wait for Trump's response. Especially if he goes after the fact she was actually a Reagan appointee and the fact he forcefully opened with the two judges he did during the debate.

radical pro abortion extremist lmao, what do you do? Run around forcefully aborting babies or something? What a clown.

Ted Cruz is pretty much at the bottom of my GOP power rankings so I guess the fact that he continues to run a sleazy campaign doesn't really change much for me. Although it is interesting to see how low he will go.

Cruz keeps lying because, why the hell not? It's gotten him this far.

Trump actually did name check his sister for SCOTUS in the past, before Saturday. Google it.

Trump has said all kinds of liberal things in the past and his "conversion" from 100% pro-choice came only in the last few years. Cruz isn't wrong in suggesting that trump may do an about face on these issues if he somehow managed to get into office. I don't think anyone can really be confident in what Trump actually believes in, besides the Great Wall of Mexico.

Somehow jumps from extreme abortion-supporting to getting rid of the 2nd amendment. these people always sound like they are playing mad libs with same old, disconnected talking points.

And no one is anti-abortion, just pro-life. It's used for "shock-value" here but I find pro/anti-abortion much more accurate and descriptive than "pro-choice" and "pro-life". I'm not "pro-life" so I guess I'm "anti-life".

What are you talking about? Pro-Life peopl would absolutely describe themselves as anti-abortion. This is in contrast to pro-choice people, who would never or rarely describe themselves as pro-abortion.

What is a radical pro abortion extremist?

Ah, I was only going by what happened since the spot became open.

Trump has said his sister would make a "terrific" SCOUTS justice, but then said a day or two ago it was just a joke and named two conservative picks during the debate instead.

(I don't know if he actually said "terrific" but you can imagine he did, can't you?)

I like the strange connection here. Extreme abortion supporting means you'd be in favor of writing the second amendment out of the bill of rights... for some reason.

That's not a nice thing to say.

You're right. It's not nice to get our hopes up like that.

I want Trump to come in on Cruz so hard that it destroys him completely. Every political aspiration squashed. Immolate any prospect Cruz holds for any role in the public sphere. Relegate this cutworm to chasing ambulances in buttfuck wherever. When it comes to Cruz, I want primeval justice. If that vector is Trump, so be it.

The whole apparatus of destroying the second amendment he describes is nonsense, and Cruz knows it's nonsense given his profession. He's just stringing emotionally charged conservative fears together in a desperate bid to get votes. It's so blatant that I fear it's some sort of next-level strategy I cannot comprehend.

i can hardly wait for this moment.

I still can't wrap my head around Ted Cruz being the 'Republican voice.'
I'm fucking flummoxed.
Have you been paying attention to the current Republican Party? He's the perfect voice. I'm actually grateful, because he doesn't try to hide what a horrible human being he is. Let everyone see the "true conservative" the Tea Party has been demanding.

Ted Cruz is such an unbelievable piece of shit in just about every way imaginable.

While this has been an absolutely hilarious and amazing campaign season, I for one will be glad when its over simply because we won't be hearing from this jack-ass every single day anymore.

I'm saying "pro-abortion" is a way more descriptive and accurate term than "pro-choice".

I think Wikipedia explains my stance pretty well:
Many of the terms used in the debate are seen as political framing: terms used to validate one's own stance while invalidating the opposition's. For example, the labels "pro-choice" and "pro-life" imply endorsement of widely held values such as liberty and freedom, while suggesting that the opposition must be "anti-choice" or "anti-life" (alternatively "pro-coercion" or "pro-death").[1] These views do not always fall along a binary; in one Public Religion Research Institute poll, seven in ten Americans described themselves as "pro-choice" while almost two-thirds described themselves as "pro-life."[2] The Associated Press favors the more neutral terms "abortion rights" and "anti-abortion" instead.[3]

I would personally describe myself as pro-abortion, certainly not as pro-choice. The main debate I've been in has never been about whether abortions should be made illegal but whether doctors should have a choice in whether they perform abortions. It'd be weird to use the "pro-choice" label to describe my stance against doctors' choices (my answer is "if you don't want to perform an important part of your job, don't become a gynecologist").

I got the impression most anti-abortion people (as in, those who don't want abortions to be legal at all (possible exception for rape)) call themselves pro-life, but I haven't met any IRL.
