Ted Price on 1UP Yours

I've only started to listen to 1UP yours recently, heard the last 4-5 podcasts and they're great, Lukes rants are hilarious. This Ted Price interview was pretty good has my stocked for Resistance, I'm not a big console FPS fan but damn the guns sound like so much fun.

:lol at Luke's rant. Good stuff...

Ted's input was interesting, though you could tell he was holding back.
Don't be afraid to name names!

luke's a good looking chap under all that fuzz. not to say he's ugly now. more like a stuffed toy at the top of an 8 year old's bed. obscure pedobear references aside, this was a great podcast.

And the ****er laughs when I tell him to go shave his beard off.

And another 1up dude comes in to defend his beard!

Do you remember what you looked like before those long nights of WoW?!

All that talk about nuclear weapons on the official site better not be just random back story babble. I've had it up to here with FPS developers being conservative (wussy) about this shit, and I'm really counting on Insomniac to step it up a notch with some real explosive devices. **** realism, I want a nuke gun damn it.

"He works for Naughty Dog or something, right?" :lol

Was it Ted himself who said that? Hilarious.

Wow, the resistance dual-wielding sounds quite interesting..

I think he was talking about it when they took this picture:

Shouldn't be too hard to spot, right? We'll hear your sister screaming at you in the background through your headset to turn the TV off because it's too bright.

hey don't worry! We can teamkill together on non ranked servers :D

BTW I had a lot of fun killing mates in BF1942 today. I really pissed of this guy called "a bad oyster" :lol too much fun XD
on purpose team killing is fun? wow, remind me to put your playstation nick on block/ignore when the time comes.

how many multiplayer games have you played? Its a lot of fun in BF1942 (Driving the carrier off map, stabbing people, suicide jeeps etc)

Yah dev interviews are a bit dry and long. The show has a personality, but devs just aren't 'personality' people.

And yes that makes sense.

As in, dev interviews are interesting to one section of an audience, those interested in the game, while the rest of the show is entertaining even if they are not talking about anything you are interested in.

Fun for you, at the expense of everyone who's trying to play the game the way it's actually meant to be played. It's like a bunch of guys getting together to play baseball, then having one person decide to run around tripping his own teammates, throwing the ball out into the street, and doing anything else he possibly can to be disruptive because it's 'fun'. I think most of us would agree that anyone who gets his kicks that way is just being an asshole.

Sorry, man. TK'ers suck. :p

Resistance will be a good launch game, but once the "launch-window" is shut, I don't think anyone will play it too much.

Exactly. Except if you did it in a street ball game you'd get beat down or worse.

People think the internet gives them a license to be a jerk, because they don't fear going to the hospital for being an asshat.

Hmmm, Ted was a bit too nice and stayed too much on the surface for my taste. I would have really liked to hear the actual games, movies and books he drew inspiration from (or did I miss that?) when it came to Resistance. He seemed to dodge that question by talking about Ratchet.

I really liked the dynamic battles bit, that's what annoys me in COD2 and some other fps's. It needs to be dynamic and change. I hope Resistance really gets there.

What I didn't get is if the weapons in Resistance are more tuned to different situations or just the different enemies?

I liked Luke's rant on microtransactions. I downloaded the Lumines demo and really really loved it, I could see it becoming my new Geometry Wars....if only. I'm not gonna buy it though. Which sucks actually, but I'm staying strong...making a difference!

Great show, Luke's microstransactions rant was classic, must have been building up to it all week.

The discussion on rumble was interesting because I think Ted Price was following the company line, he made it sound like it was a waste of time in Ratchet even though I bet he didn't think that at the time. Interesting discussion with him, they've really got their shit together at Insomniac, the way they planned out and designed a stellar premium original launch title is extremely impressive, especially when you consider nobody has really done it at all for PS3. Can't wait for Resistance, and Ratchet PS3 for that matter.

On a side note, I know very few people care about this probably, but John continues to say that NFS Carbon 360 runs nice and smooth, I pray he's right that game will be way better with a nice smooth framerate.

The FPS crowd would at least for 2007, I think, given there's no SOCOM at launch, and frankly I don't see any real reason why people would rather hang around COD3 online if Resistance is indeed a much better game.

I like Ted totally waffling on any hard question regarding Sony or microtransactions. Actually, Ted hardly said anything at all...

I'm listening to it more, and Ted's justification for not having rumble is really, really pathetic. "Oh, well a lot of people turned it off"...come ****ing on

The impromptu Microtransaction rant was golden. Theres so much opportunity in the online space for game longevity, and these publishers (and boneheaded consumers) are killing it.
Seriously, don't buy Lumines Live :(

..and I hate to be a smug bastard, but I ****ing called 40 player Resistance on dedicated servers.

Yeah. I can understand not mentioning the "bad games" out of respect for those companies/people... but there's nothing wrong with talking about other great games in the genre. I'm sure we could guess most of the big influences, but ALL devs take reference and copy ideas from other successful games. That's just the nature of the business, and it's fine. But a lot of companies seem embarassed to admit they didn't reinvent the wheel.

good podcast.

i think nintendo will make the gc version of twilight princess available to buy at retail in na. i decided i was going to buy both versions a while ago, so i can find out for myself which version is the best.

not an insomniac fan, so i didn't think i'd find the ted price interview interesting, but it was, though it did become vague towards the end. in fact, all the podcasts with industry guests have been interesting, on 1up, next-gen, gamasutra and other sites. listening to journalists/fans is decent, but i prefer listening to developers.

i think microtransactions are evil. i believe the worst case, nightmare scenario, presented by the guys on the show, will happen because developers will prey on the weakness of consumers. publishers will sell those things they know people will buy, like cars and tracks in gt, episodes in ff, stadiums in madden, dungeons in zelda, etc. i think it's coming and it's going to be ****ing horrendous. games will end up costing $100+, easily, and most likely far more.

even though the idea of some of these things can sound appealing, the system will be abused and there's just something about it which feels like being held to ransom. i dislike the fact games will be, and are, released incomplete. it results in gimped versions of games being sold with the option to purchase the full, finished experience for additional fees.

however, imo, this strategy will result in biting publishers and developers in the ass because if they think consumers don't take risks now, the way franchises and genres are declining in sales, they will be taking even less in this microtransacted future.

publishers/developers are hoping online business models will make consumers spend more money overall on videogames, but i don't think they will. consumers will be buying far less games. keeping the fans of a franchise tied to single game for a long period will have consequences.

Is that so hard to believe? Even luke said he turned rumble off in halo mp. its really personal preference, some people turn it off.

Pretty good interview, but the rumble rationalization was laughable, and ditto that good SPE coding contributing to 40 player online. Old Pentium 1 games say 'hi!', as does Black Hawk Down lastgen; it's the servers and servers alone that make it possible or not possible. Sure, design considerations regarding other game elements and implementation will always have to be made when adding more players online, but every platform, not just PS3, can do forty online.

We definitely need to see more dedicated servers, but I expect them to be very rare outside of key first/second party titles. And MS, get in the game.

He was just explaining that is was not missed. It was not a justification. As he said, imagine rumble in this game, it would be shaking for a whole level in some parts of the game.

I dunno if I would say he waffled on Microtransactions issue. We'll see what Resistance offers, but he drew comparisons to Half Life 2 when talking about doing microtransactions...so that is a big benefit right there. He also said they wouldn't be charging money for weapons.

As for rumble, what do you want him to say? No offense but you are a fool if you thinik he is going to put the smack down on PS3 having no rumble when he is the face of the biggest PS3 launch game. Besides, he doesn't work for Sony's internal hardware team that decided to take rumble out. He is head of a company that makes games for the system.

Actually, I'm playing CoD2 on 360 right now and I kind of agree with him. Now granted some of the uses with rumble are awesome in the game. Things like enviromental effects when you are in the trenches, and a tank goes rumbling above you. However if you get shot the control rumbles and it makes me miss when I'm trying to fire! I realize that if you get shot you shouldn't be able to return fire, but it is so damn hard to aim with analog sticks it makes things a bit frutrated to try and reposition your shot. Especially in a game like CoD2 where there are like 10 enemies shooting at YOU the entire time. Or even when you fire your weapon it rumbles, depending on the rumble density you have to readjust your aim and it sometimes makes me miss. I've also spent years playing PC FPS with keyboard and mouse so the lack of rumble doesn't make a huge deal to me though..in fact with the lack of rumble I think the PS3 pad will end up being a better FPS pad because you don't have any reactionary motors to mess up your aim anymore.
