Society is a big enabler in letting things like this happen. We've very much committed ourselves to "slut shaming" where women using birth control, having sex before marriage etc. are whores and deserve what's coming to them, while the men get off scot-free even though they were the ones committing the sexual act. This also extends to rape, where no amount of clothing isn't "asking for it." (Funny how this doesn't apply to douchebag men sagging their pants showing off their boxers or walking around in their wife beaters or even shirtless, but hey, that's male-dominated society for you)
The boys in these instances also usually (not always, but usually) are on the sports teams or something that earns them high standing with their peers, which America gives an absurd amount of importance in the school system, mainly due to parents who try and live vicariously through their children and aren't any more mature than their children mentally.
However, this is something you can only really say looking at the broader issue. These fuckers deserve the worst. No amount of bad parenting should tell you that raping a drunk girl at a party is okay, not to mention the follow up bullying (another thing that's swept under the rug) and harassment she endured. It's sort of like that CNN story that focused entirely on two boys who were tried and convicted for raping a girl, and how "oh no, their lives have been ruined!" Yeah, it's sad in its own way, but what about the girl? She's going to have to carry that baggage with her for the rest of her life. She is the victim of a very personal crime. And for the usual concern trolls who come in and complain about people saying the victim was pretty or whatever, the girl in the CNN story wasn't named or photographed and it still caused a ruckus from people who actually have, you know, perspective.

Holy crap. I had friends that went to Saratoga High just a few years ago. It's just a few minutes away from my high school (graduated in '08). This isn't even a bad part of town; it's in the Silicon Valley suburbs.
From wikipedia: "In 2008 CNN/Money ranked Saratoga number 4 in its listing of top-earning towns. Saratoga also was ranked by Forbes in 2009 as one of America's top 20 most-educated small towns. In 2010 Bloomberg Businessweek named Saratoga the most expensive suburb in California."
What the hell is wrong with these kids? How can you live in such a nice area and become so morally fucked-up? Are their parents too career-focused to notice?
Kids who grow up in wealthy neighborhoods turn out to be entitled little shits. Speaking from experience here.
