Tekken 5 vs Virtua Figther 4 Evolution

So I'm looking to get my first fighting game for the PS2, and it's between these two. First and foremost, I enjoyed Virtua Figther 1 and 2 on the Saturn and 3tb on the Dreamcast I just got into a bit more recently. Tekken is a series I have never played.....so I'm not real familliar with the fighting style nor any of the characters.

Right now, I'm leaning towards Tekken 5 mostly because it's newer and more importantly supports true 16:9 widescreen and 480p. VF4 has neither of those features which makes me think it is going too look like crap on a big lcd tv. Should I just get Tekken 5? I guess I can just skip VF4 and get Virtua Figther 5 whenever I decide to pick up a ps3/xbox 360.

Am I missing a lot by not having played Tekken?
 
I prefer VF, but Tekken 5 is the best Tekken, looks amazing on the PS2 and is definitely worth checking out. I'd get that then VF5 later on.
 
If you're going to get VF5 you can...probably...skip VF4 Evo, but do it knowing you're missing one of the best and balanced fighters ever created.
 
You're not missing particularly much by not playing Tekken. VF4: Evo however, is absolutely superb. With a great single player mode, too.
 
If you will eventually get VF5, grab Tekken instead. If not, though, get VF4: Evo. It's probably my favorite fighting game.
 
All things being equal, get Virtua Fighter 4 if you want deep gameplay and want to exercise your technical prowess. The only reason to get Tekken 5 over VF4 would be because it looks...slightly prettier, I guess.

I like them both, but Tekken 5 is more newbie friendly and has better options and extras. Plus, if you have an HDTV it's definitely the flashier of the two.

they're both good but go with Tekken 5
 
Eiji post is full of truth I was gonna say that but you asked for T5 not TTT. In truth unless it's DR or you like casual play stay away from regular T5 it's broke. VF4 is definetly my pick.
 
Tekken is a fun game ... for what it wants to do, however, if you want a FIGHTING game, Virtua Fighter has no equal (unless punching Bears and kangaroos does something for you)
 
I personally can't really enjoy Tekken after VF, loved Tekken 3, disliked 4, loved VF4, couldn't enjoy T: DR.

VF just feels more... diverse in the characters, and I had to spend a lot more time to become proficient with a char (mashing will only take you so far), something I never had to do in Tekken where it was more of a "find a move and stick to it" ordeal.

I say if you're planning to spend a lot of time with the game, go with Evo (for the depth and near unlimited amount of extras), otherwise, go with Tekken 5 (for easy access).
 
Why not just get both? Each should be sub $20 now, and both are worth the price on their own merits (which have already been discussed). Personally though, I would skip both and get either of the Soul Calibur titles.
 
Get vf and sc. Namco and Sega's best fighters. I would rate vf as the far superior game and sc is more forgiving and very pretty (wide-screen too)
 
If you want fun get Tekken 5.

If you want an overrated generic fighting game that will bore you to tears get VF4.
 
I've had Mishima blood running through my veins since I was a little girl. I recently bought VF4 for $10 at Best Buy. While I don't regret it because it was $10, I just wish it was easier to get into. I really wanted to love it, but I don't know. I guess I have to give it another chance. I love tekken. It's more responsive and the graphics are way better, not just slightly, as someone put it. I have to give VF4 another chance.
 
Tekken 5 PS2 is value packed. I'd say get that one if you have to limit yourself to just one...

Both are excellent games though. Just buy both. Used copies are super cheap. :D
 
If you're not trying to prove your "hardcoreness" and actually want to enjoy your game, pick up Tekken 5. You'll be able to get more out of it and so will those around you.

If you're just desperately trying to sound like you know something -- anything -- about fighting games, or actually live in Japan where they (used to) play it, get VF4. You'll be bored to tears you'll never even register a scratch on the surface of it ... but hey, the kids on the Internet will think you're cool.

Edit: Not actually saying which is better, I'm just being realistic here.
 
Both great games (OMG - you can like TWO different fighting series???!!!). If you like all the other VFs, you're probably "safer" in getting VF4 as you're pretty much guaranteed to love it and it's a pretty big jump over 3, which was good already (I think the VF3 -> VF4 jump is much bigger than the 4->5 jump, personally).

Tekken plays quite different and you'll have to be open-minded and not try play it like it's vf. If you can do this, you should find some enjoyment with it.
 
Going through the tutorials and quest mode of VF4:E will have you feeling like a better player- and a better person.*


*Results may vary. Consult your doctor before playing VF4:E. Women who are nursing or are pregnant should not play VF4:E.
 
Get both but if you can only get one go with VF4 EVO first, it's simply the best 3D fighting game. Some say even better than VF5 and since you liked the past VF games you'll love this one.
Although you should still get either Tekken Tag or 5.
 
I'd get Tag over 5, but since he's NEVER played a Tekken game, I would have to recommend T5 if he also wants to try T1-3 which are included.

Honestly, this is like asking if you should get SF3 or Garou. They're different takes. Both will treat you right if you put the time in, both are quality games.

If you've played VF 1-3, VF4 offers a nice familiar environment for you to pop back into. Tekken will take some adjustment, but it will also be rewarding if you can get into it.
 
Flame me all you want : there is no more rewarding,deep and (just plain) fun fighting franchise than VF.This is not up for dispute either :D
 
Tekken does everything that VF can and vice versa. I don't know what people are smoking that makes them think that one game has more "depth" than the other one. Fun is subjective, depth isn't. Tekken has the advantage of having more characters to deal with when it comes to specialization and balancing. This is painfully obvious with Tekken 6 which has over 30 original characters and all appear to be balanced well, as compared to VF5 which has less than 20. VF4 on the other hand has more content in the single player campaign, which gives you more stuff to do if you aren't playing competitively with others. Tekken 5 on the other hand doesn't look like crap on a big LCD, supporting 480P and widescreen. It comes down to what you personally want really.

The true answer to this thread is to get both, they are sub $20 each. Also get Tekken DR + online on PS3 and VF5 on 360 (for the online), and wait for Tekken 6.
 
VF is the Bières de Chimay of fighting games, superbly crafted in everyway and a delight to play. Tekken is the Bud Light, consumed by the masses.
