So does soccer pretty much go on year round between all the different leagues?

It's typically from August till May, though there's some differences between the national leagues.

In Europe, the biggest league is the English Premier League (EPL). After that, there's the Serie A (Italy) and La Liga (Spain) and then there's Ligue 1 (France) and the Bundesliga (Germany). Smaller leagues include the Eredivisie (the Netherlands) and the Liga (Portugal).

Anyway, that a look at our Official Football thread 2007/2008.

And is Liverpool crap then? I thought I always heard they were like the Patriots of soccer.

Liverpool are amazing. This forum is full of Arsenal and Manchester United fans, so excuse their ignorance.

If you're referring to the team that's just the most stacked, then Real Madrid would've easily qualified a few years ago when they had all the Galacticos playing together (well fuck, do we really have to consider Beckham a Galactico?). I guess now Chelsea could be considered stacked, since Abramovich can wipe his ass with thousand dollar bills.

I love playing soccer it's great exercise and you get such a rush when your team is making a push

But

it's horribly boring to watch on television unless it's the World Cup. Also, I love how 'english football enthusiasts' main line of defense in these threads is to talk shit about american football like that's still new to anyone in the past 50 years or so.

Liverpool's the crappiest of the four. They suck about as much as Tottenham Hotspur. They're pretty much equal, really.

Right, Lakitu?

Ypu should really stop calling this sport soccer. You fail at your first lesson.

Liverpool are a good team now, but there glory days were in the 80's. Now it's Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea which contend for top spot.

Half this statement is true.

(It's the second half of it.)

Arsenal are also really run by NAMBLA. True story.

Right, Lakitu?

You're just jealous we have Ryan Babel.

Do you take Adderall for your attention span? Or are commercials reminding you why you shop at Home Depot and why you drink Budweiser more effective for maintaining your interest in a game that's best described as a poor bastardization of football?

Don't drink, don't have ADD, and soccer makes me sleepy. Do you use a razor blade to cut yourself out of your panties when they get in a wad?

No, Liverpool are amazing.

There was an article by someone on ESPN trying to choose their Premier League side was pretty funny.

Basically, Manchester United are your Patriots/New York Yankees. Glory hunting fans due to their success in the "Premiership Years" but the team is very good.

Chelsea have more money than God and thus can buy anyone they feel like.

Arsenal are your "North London Invisibles" going an entire 32 game season undefeated. They don't spend money on players and instead breed them.

Liverpool are historically the biggest team in England with the most league wins and most European Cups of any English side. Passion beyond words with European nights scaring big name players (including our new American owners :lol)

I don't talk shit about American Football, I love College Football and the NFL. I love playing it. But football (soccer) is much more tactically acute than American Football, I don't know anyone can say its not.

Actually Arsenal have finished fourth more than we have.

And American football enthusiasts who have no clue how the game is even played shitting all over candid discussion of football is something entirely new? Believe it or not, millions of fans are just as or more passionate about their club than their country, which is presumably the reason you consider WC games more exciting than club games.

Oh surely you can do better than that. Standard retort #21 again relegated to the wastebasket.

You got me there. Almost as jealous as I'm about Liverpool having Dirk Kuijt.

Fernando Torres is too good for Liverpool. I wonder when he'll make the move to a English title contender.

nicely done.

Now somebody take the piss out of Spurs before I do it

Yes, I basically want to know all about the big clubs, the leagues they're in, and all the stuff that goes along with it. Like this premiership and FA Cup (which sounds cool with the amateur stuff), is there a playoff system, and if so, how does it work? Sounds like the premiership might be point-based from Gary Whitta's description (thanks for that!).

Well let's start at the top and work our way down.

The world governing body of soccer (from now on reffered to as Football so as I can keep my sanity) is called FIFA. They're the top dog so to speak, but they are mostly in charge of the international matches that are played such as friendlies or qualifying matches for the World Cup (more about that a bit later).

Each continent has their own governing body too. For North America it's CONCACAF, for Europe it's UEFA. Basically they oversee all the football in their respective zones to make sure everything is legit. They're also in charge of continental club and international competitions (For instance UEFA oversee the Champions League which is club based, and the European Championship where international teams compete).

Each nation also has their own governing body (starting to see all the red tape here yet are we?), England has the FA. Italy the FIGC and so on. These run all domestic competions the leagues and cups and so forth.

Ok hopefully you're still with me at this point (most of my future information will be based upon English and European football because that's what I know and love :D )

English football is seperated into a many, many leagues, with the Premiership being the highest league in the land. Traditionally the league runs between August of one year until April/May of the next (Clubs don't play during the summer due to international team commitments. Also for holidaying with their WAGs), and this is the same for most continental teams, I don't think they do it quite like this in Scandinavia, because it's cold up there and dark too. Good thing they have volvos.

The Premiership consists of 20 teams. Each team plays the other at home and also away during the calendar. Matches traditionally take place on a Saturday, but due to a media coverage boom in the last decade or so, we are now seeing more and more matches spread out to Sundays, Mondays and wouldn't you know it the rest of the week too (never Fridays though. Too much disco to do).

Aswell as competing in the league there are also two Domestic Cup competitions to compete for. The FA Cup and the League Cup. These competitions are done in a simple knockout formout; if you win, you're through to the next round. The League Cup is generally considered commercial fodder. It's not nearly as prestigious as the FA Cup, which is the oldest football competition in the world, and in England is traditionally the last game played at the end of the playing season in May. The FA Cup is great because you often get low ranking, local sides drawn again behemoth teams like the mighty Aston Villa.

Back to the league, the top 4 clubs at the end of a Premiership season (the number of clubs differs for different countries. For instance Greece only has 1 or 2 clubs eligible) enter next year's Champions League. In the past few years these clubs have been the big four; Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and ... oh yes, Arsenal.

They are drawn into groups with the other "league winners" from around the continent into groups of 4. They play this like a mini league with the top two going through to the next stage where it becomes like the FA Cup, a knockout tournament. Rinse and repeat until you are down to two clubs who take part in the Final.

If you're lucky your club will win it and you'll see scenes like this:

If you lose more like this:

LOL Liverpool you do make me laugh sometimes..

Oh now thats just below the belt. Almost makes me wish that a Dutch team was good enough to make it into the last 16 of the Champions Legue so we could thrash the hell out of them.

It's sad when a team only thrives in knock-out competitions. There's just not consistency at Liverpool. Then again, it is Rafael 'I have 30 players in my squad so by God I'm gonna rotate them no matter the form' Benitez.

Thanks to Liverpool fans this thread is now officially derailed.

;)

can't really blame them tho. If I was a Liverpool fan and I had to convince someone my team was the greatest in the world I would definitely start with someone who knew fuck all about football. Higher chances of them believing it and all that... :D

It's no problems (sorry for calling you an idiot, that was rather tasteless of me), alot of Utd fans try and post that image whenever they can. I just hate that rubbish rag, I've never bought a single Sun and never will.

It's alright. In fact I probably overreacted! I'm just a bit sour still about that whole Sun episode as you can see.

And Lakitu, everybody knows the best team in the world is Aston Vanilla.

For the most part, each country has it's own league of club teams and the champions of the league are based on points earned through the season. There is no post-season. Most of the prominent leagues run fall to spring, although many southern hemisphere leagues and the US's MLS run spring to fall. In addition to the league, most countries have a playoff-like competition that runs concurrently with the league's season. The reason the knockout competition takes so long is, that while soccer leagues tend to have fewer teams, there are many levels of leagues (like minor leagues) within each country, and the knockout competition is open to teams from all levels.

The difference between minor leagues and soccer league levels is that there is a system of promotion and regulation between soccer levels. Instead of players getting called up to the big leagues, entire teams do. For example, in the English Premier League, after the season, three teams will be sent down to the Football League Championship and three teams from the Championship will be promoted to the Premier League.

Also, the best teams in the leagues are entered into various competitions between club teams of different nearby countries (the FIFA confederations which are roughly based on continents.) Instead of preseason games, teams will play "friendlies" with other teams, usually with ones they won't encounter in league play.

So club teams typically have two to three competitions they play for each season: league, domestic cup, and, if they qualify, international cup. England actually has two domestic cups, although one is rated much more highly than the other.

Then, you've got national teams who play in friendlies, confederation cup competitions, and the World Cup. Confederation cups and the World Cup generally take place every four years and are alternated kind of like the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Oh, and soccer is an English shorthand for "Association Football" that dates back to the earliest days of soccer. Unless you want to sound like a pretentious idiot (or want to impress a chick who always calls it "football"), you'd be best off tailoring your usage of "football," "soccer," and "American football" to your audience.

haleon, if you want to start following football, start following a team. Dont try to concentrate on all the league's straight away. Just find a team to support, find out which league they play in and you'll gradually pick things up.

Now I'm guessing you obviously want to suuport a big side. The best clubs in the world are in europe. Here are the best clubs around at the moment.

In England:
Manchester United
Arsenal
Chelsea
Liverpool

In Italy:
Inter
AC Milan
Juve (they've had some really big problems over the last couple of years, so they're not as big as they used to be)
Roma (not as big as the other three, but still big enough)

In Spain:
Real Madrid
Barcelona

Other big clubs:
Lyon (from france)
Bayern Munich (from germany)
PSV (from holland)

Those are the biggest clubs in europe right now. Most people will probably say that barca is the best club in the world; they've got a great squad with some really big stars. Now if you're serious about wanting to follow football, then the guys in the football thread will help you out. You could support anyone and get to know stuff about the club because there's atleast one person who posts in that thread that supports one of the teams that I mentioned above.

THANK YOU. The only folks that think it's blasphemous to say "soccer" must not be informed on the origins of the word.
