Telltale is now shipping feature uncomplete disc based games.

I think its weird and it would also make it a hard gift for people. But if its just a download kind of like a day one patch then its not too bad.

disc shipment for those games, should be until seasons are over, so the disc can be sold as a complete game

telltale games are actually based over a digital based distribution, so of it takes time to complete a game, that time has ppl to wait to get the disc release

How big is that notice on the game box?
If it's clearly visible I don't see the issue.

If it's printed in really small text and hidden away in the back of the box then that's pretty bad and they should be forced to change it

What a weird thing to get angry about. You're acting like they're trying to pull a fast one on you or something.
It should really display clearly what you're getting on the front of the box and 'internet connection required'

Season 1, Episodes 1-5. Internet Connection Required for Episode 6.
Season 1, Episode 1. Internet Connection Required for Episodes 2-6.

I think there's a pretty clear difference between steam and consoles, the latter of which being what this conversation revolves around. The majority of gamers buying physical do so for:

A. Collecting purposes

or

B. Not wanting to deal with the hassle of downloading

Why the hell would I go to the store and grab a physical copy otherwise? That's why it's odd that they want to release an incomplete game and then have you download the climax. Can you imagine if a Zelda or Halo game released 5/6th's of the completed game on disc but made you download the ending? That's stupid.

Also, if you can't see the difference between free post release content that doesn't impact the main story and being forced to download the climax/ending of a game, I don't know what to tell you.

Not everyone has credit card. I used to buy expansions that were just a code all the time when i didn't have one.

I get it for a new start of a series, but why is Got disc a season pass when it's coming out when all episodes are done? That's my only concern.

Seems like a holiday rush thing, with the episodes being delivered by a patch rather than through something that would require printing codes

IIRC back when they made Back to the Future, Telltale did offer a disc-based release with all episodes upfront, but released them episodically digitally. I bought that DVD release and seem to remember it that way, although I could be wrong.

If they have done this before then it is poor form to do otherwise now. I just don't think it unreasonable to allow people to buy a physical season pass before all the episodes are out, as it were, though I can see this would be a nightmare for collectors.

What do physical buyers feel about bullshit like this? Season pass on disc.

How do i feel? What you said.
Bullshit.

Felt like an "online pass" to me.
Especially if the full episodes are already out and they do this.
Didnt follow the series so i am not sure.

But definitely affect resale/rental market.

I saw this when it was announced last month, and it made very little sense.
But then again, I am averse to all episodic games and their season passes asking money in advance. I am perfectly comfortable just waiting for them to finish the whole game, and even take advantage of inevitable discounts along the way.
Season passes are the biggest ripoff companies managed to pull off, no point in loaning money to large corporations, with them collecting interest as well.

Does anyone know if the disc just gets an "update" or if there's a redeemable code in the box?

To me, that's the difference between "no big deal" and "crap."

If the downloads come as title updates, that means the disc is resellable... if they're code redemptions, you're buying a coaster.

This christmas cash grab with Minecraft seems like a huge gamble that could really backfire on Telltale. I pity the staff that have to put up with thousands of angry parents demanding refunds.

As long as it is tied to disc and not a code fine by me. I preordered it along with Minecraft story mode just so I can share it with my family. So as long as game is not locked to one Xbl profile I am happy.

We used to play these games on iPad so I only had to buy one copy but with these discs I can now buy and install on 2 different Xbox ones and share that way.

Don't mind dling eps, just don't like game locked to one account. Hope they release a boxed version of tales from boarder lands too.

I always wonder how many people in threads like this actually are inconvenienced by the "issue" and how many are doing their part to speak up for those with no voice.

Don`t release the disc before all episodes are out?

This isn`t PC.

Because then you will have people complaining why not release the available episodes on disc and allow the downloading of remaining episodes?

Your argument is only half of the opinion. Many people would prefer this method and their opinions are just as valid. But as with most mass decisions, someone has to get the short end.

The physical Minecraft story mode will be released as a physical season pass this month, so now we have to scan each box for stuff like season pass and online required. Imagine if you buy a boxed copy of Minecraft from Telltale later this month, and all you are getting is one episode. With their pace, people will have the last episode somewhere around christmas 2016.

IIRC back when they made Back to the Future, Telltale did offer a disc-based release with all episodes upfront, but released them episodically digitally. I bought that DVD release and seem to remember it that way, although I could be wrong.

Didn't they also have a similar release schedule with Jurassic Park? I don't remember waiting for releases for that either. The only Telltale games I remember waiting for releases were TWD and onwards, and of course Bone which famously took years between episodes.

Not quite.

BttF was definitely an episodic release, although there was a complete-season retail version later. Jurassic Park was originally announced as an episodic series, but was heavily delayed after bad impressions (though it still got crappy reviews) and released as one package.

And Bone was only two episodes - the second one came out 7 months after the first, so I think your memory's a little off there.

Pretty soon discs won't even hold game data, they'll just unlock a code to download the game from the store.

I don't see the big deal:

1) These are episodic games. By nature, they come out episodically
2) Some people want to play the game immediately
3) These people would also prefer a physical copy of the game, maybe for collection purposes
4) They buy the disc

I wonder if the benefit of releasing this now as opposed to when it's complete is that significant. I assume they will release a complete edition after it's all done too. I wonder if it will confuse a lot of consumers

sounds like it's basically the equivalent of buying download cards, it just happens to have a disc for the first episode. Sort of a hybrid approach.

Obviously if you're the type of person that primarily is focused on "disc=game, nothing more needed", this isn't a good idea (episodic games in general aren't a good idea for those folks, at least maybe until the season is completed).

But if you're someone that cares primarily about the episodic game itself, and you don't have a credit card, or you want to get a potential discount from buying it in-store, or you want a nice case for display purposes or gifting reasons, or you want to save a little bit on bandwith, or it's just an impulse buy, then I imagine this works fine.

Sounds like there are different pros/cons for these approaches, depending on an individual customer's needs.

This is pretty strange, especially since the disc for Game of Thrones releases the same day that the final episode comes out (Nov. 17). My guess is that episode 6 wasn't finished before they went to make the discs, and they produced the discs early to make sure that they had a good amount of copies on the shelf for Black Friday.

Basically, DLC like today only you have "entitlement" to the season pass. Compared to EA/Ubisoft, it's ship the game and no entitlement to season pass.

Sounds like lost sales to me.

If you care so much, don't buy it? Looking at it from the company's perspective, it makes a ton of sense with little to no downside.
What's next, shipping half a movie and then download the ending? Release content digitally if you want it episodic like a TV series. They don't ship one episode and then expect everyone to download the rest.

Dumb as fuck. Completely defeats the purpose of physical media.

What's next, shipping half a movie and then download the ending? Release content digitally if you want it episodic like a TV series. They don't ship one episode and then expect everyone to download the rest.

But it's not episodic if you purchase the physical version...you are just downloading the last episode of it. This is no different than a day one patch.

Completely Bullshit.

I will not purchase anything from Telltale if this is how they are going to do business. It honestly makes me sick.

Wait, so it lets you download the other episodes straight from the disc? Not give out a code.

Cause I usually just redbox telltale games and buy them. But this can be ways of combating renting the games?
