Tembo the Badass Elephant (Sega/Game Freak Collab) - XB1/PS4/PC

Why is your new game not coming out for Wii U?

When I was writing the presentation documents for this game, I drew a
mockup poster, and I put the Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox logos at
the bottom. It seemed to fit, and it happened to stick that way. We thought about other hardware during development, but our hands were pretty full with those three platforms!

Someone must make a thread with all the bullshit excuses, they are hilarious at this point.

You know ... not being on all consoles as a multiplatform game is sad, especially if the game, like possibly in this case, does not run on an engine which has no official Wii U support.
But ok, most likely a decision made by Sega, they should do as they want.

But that brainfart-excuse i really pissing me off, either say "Not decided by us/Decided by Sega" or "Not enough manpower/budget" or say nothing.

If Gamefreak was not tied in with the pokemon rights, i would love to see Nintendo approaching another studio for the next pokemon game or even develop it in-house...

So this is the Harmoknight team, more or less?

You can think Game Freak as having three teams: Team A, that does the main (read: new generation) Pokémon games, Team B, that does remakes and complementary versions, and Team C, which is essentially Game Freak's version of Google's '20 percent time'. That is to say, it's not as much a team as it is employees being able to freely pitch and develop prototypes for game ideas they might have. The best ideas (HarmoKnight, Solitiba and Tembo so far) move forward to becoming actual games.

Team A and B aren't exactly set either (the majority of the studio probably puts their hands in 'Team A' projects) but you can think of Game Freak as generally having three workforces of different sizes and scopes.

I just don't see the PS4/XB1 audience eating this up like a Nintendo audience would.

Maybe they're targeting a PS+/GWG strategy with this game that would be profitable. Wii U doesn't have that kind of program and if it's being given away on PS4/XB1 it's even less likely anyone on Wii U would purchase it.

Is there trouble in paradise? Even though GameFreak is an independent studio, they worked nearly exclusive with Nintendo for the last 15 years, so it obviously raises questions when such a studio is not only partnering up with another publisher, but develops its new game for everything but Nintendo platforms.

It makes me actually wonders what's going on behind the scenes regarding Pokémon. It'll obviously stay Nintendo exclusive, but I'm curious if Game Freak is unsatisfied that Nintendo is against embracing the mobile space even one bit.

You can be 100% sure that "No WiiU version" is Sega's doing.

Cue posts from Wii U owners about "stealing our games!!"

Anyway this looks neat. I loved Drill Dozer. Harmonknight was meh. Always good to see Game Freak doing something non-Pokemon.

I know the whole Game Freak deal, but not even on a Nintendo system really is shocking. Damn. Feels kinda bad, like they betrayed Nintendo or something lol.

Anywayz: Now to watch the trailer as soon as I can find it on my other device because this one flat out doesn't work on YT. >_>

It makes perfect sense if this is a deal with SEGA. They could aim for pretty much the same spec target on PS4/XBO/PC, but they would have to do a lot to accommodate a Wii U version that would probably not even see 10% of the total sales. Not that the game looks particularly demanding from a technical perspective, but I bet SEGA just felt it wasn't worth it.

Pokemon is fine. Ain't no fully-fledged Pokemon games appearing on mobile due to the contracts in place.

Whatever the reason listed it's very interesting that there will be no Wii U/3DS version. It goes to show the sad state of the Wii U, IMO.

I guess Game Freak wants to start building other IP so maybe they have more freedom and possibly even break some ties with Nintendo. I don't know, it all just seems really strange and like there is far more to it than what we know.

This coming from a Wii U owner who thoroughly enjoys the Wii U.

Edit: To be clear, also a PS/MS owner :)

I kind of got viewtiful joe vibes... weird.

Also the no go for wiiu reasoning sounds like, eh we didnt feel like it. Might as well have said that lol.

Hell, I doubt that mobile is even an issue. Considering since October 2013, the games developed by Game Freak have resulted in just under $1bn in revenue. That's like 5% of the smartphone industry in FY2014, just to themselves.

Nobody with any business sense can honestly suggest shifting Pokémon over to iOS is a good idea.

But, this is a discussion for another topic.

You're overthinking it. They have total freedom and aren't wanting to "break ties" (why on Earth would that even be something anyone would want to do?). This is one of their side projects, being published by another company. That's all. This has very little impact on Game Freak as an overall company, or their relationship with Nintendo.

There are several Pokémon things on mobile. Pokédex 3D, the style app, Pokémon TV, Camp Pokémon, maybe others I've forgotten..

Or, they could make this possibly not very demanding game on an engine like Unity, which runs on pretty much everything without having to do much accommodation for any platform.
If the game bombs on the platforms, a mobile version would also be possible with Unity, amazing, right?

Wow, how... odd. I guess I assumed Game Freak and Nintendo had some sort of agreement to make titles exclusively for their consoles since there hasn't been a non-Nintendo GF title in so long.

It looks alright, I guess. We were all expecting an elephant game anyway, so I wasn't surprised at all with how it looks.

No there isn't trouble in paradise. This has no impact on Pokémon or Game Freak's relationship with Nintendo. They don't have to develop everything for Nintendo platforms when they're independent.

Yup, they're just expanding. It's good for the company and it creates a safety net for them on the VERY off chance that Nintendo goes under.

Considering the money they've made from Pokémon, there hasn't been a financially compelling reason for them to do, and arguably, there still isn't.

I see GameFreak tapped their crazy platformer side for this. Getting slight Drill Dozer X Donkey Kong vibes. The concept as a whole is fucking hilarious.

Mobile is not an issue unless Nintendo relinquish their publishing rights, trademarks pertaining to the franchise, and ownership in TPC - It ain't happening lol :p

Also, I think it's a good idea that a segment be written on your website about TPC & Nintendo :)

Pokemon Trading Card Game :)

How do you know it's not being made with Unity?

You're kidding yourself if you think it's as simple as pressing a Wii U export button and calling it a day.

As I've said several times before if it was a Game Freak's decision they would make Pokemon multiplatform. I don't believe the "no Wii U version" excuse for a second and I think they hold a little grudge with Nintendo.

Anyway the game looks cool! Hoping it is a good game (will buy the Steam version)

At the same time, they can't really say: "Sega won't let us because their Sonic games on Wii U sold like crap, especially Sonic Boom because it's the worst game they ever published."

They hold a grudge against the company that helped them make billions?

And i think that you are grossly overestimating said required amount of work. Oh, btw. i know very well that there is no "I win"-button in development, since i work as a developer (not games!) and i sometimes would love to have such a button.

Haha. That excuse is funny. I'm not really digging the Rambo elephant crossover (surprised anyone here is) but I'll toss them a couple bucks on steam to check it out.

Ahahah what?

I'm assuming it's just a polite answer since they don't want to say "We aren't as sure about if it will sell well on the Wii U." given their partnership with Nintendo.

Maybe that seems polite, but it really reads quite dumb. This is not how one should make platform decisions or even just say this is the way you make platform decisions. However, if the game ends up well, I'll play on my Bone, it looks fun, but I don't like the jumping curve, the elephant seems to be quite heavy.

I don't think so. If they have a target of PS4, Xbox One and PCs with a similar level of hardware, then it suddenly becomes a lot more difficult to port over to the Wii U, considering it's architecture and hardware are very different. It's hard to say how much work would be involved, of course, but it's hard to imagine they didn't consider the Wii U at some point before deciding not to go with it.

I doubt it's any kind of grudge at all. Probably just Game Freak testing out other platforms to prepare for a hypothetical future in which Nintendo's troubles continue (or get worse).

What a lovely aesthetic this game has. Reminds me of Alien Hominid (minus the bloodshed) with its thick outlines on characters.

There is always room in my collection for a side scrolling action game.
