Tembo the Badass Elephant (Sega/Game Freak Collab) - XB1/PS4/PC

This will save SEGA? :/

I mean, that's what's left in their basket now that they've announced focusing on online PC and mobile... Damn we never going to have Shenmue 3 do we?

"Badass elephant." Game Freak. And on a non-Nintendo console?

That's another discussion, but I can't see how Tembo's a bad idea for SEGA, given that it'll have a tail of sales on Steam for years to come and could benefit from PS+ and GWG patronage. I agree that austerity isn't a good long-term goal for the publisher, though.

The art looks pretty good as I would expect, with lots of color even in urban settings. Hopefully there's a modicum of challenge.

Could be they just wanted to keep it x86 and didn't have the budget for a PPC codebase. I dunno.

Maybe it's running on UE4. XD

I just watched the trailer, this looks like SO MUCH FUN

Fantastic art style, animation and effects.

And dat spin charge, ground pound and charge tackle.

Well that was completely unexpected I was sure it was going to be a mobile game!

But I'm excited, I hope this ushers in a new age of mid-budget SEGA titles and I'm really glad they've continued their PC push too :P

The "reason" for not releasing on Wii U is absurd. Honestly just sounds like they wanted to stick it to Nintendo.

But eh, looks fun, could be good, though I must admit that I thought Harmoknight was pretty shite.

Sega doesn't need saving.

This is just another product in their digital only strategy.

I like it BUT I will buy it only if they get rid of that awful pause after every hit the elephant does. Horrible decision.

I don't think so. If they have a target of PS4, Xbox One and PCs with a similar level of hardware, then it suddenly becomes a lot more difficult to port over to the Wii U, considering it's architecture and hardware are very different. It's hard to say how much work would be involved, of course, but it's hard to imagine they didn't consider the Wii U at some point before deciding not to go with it.
Given that many developers of kickstarted indie-games have the financial and human resources to port their games to all consoles and/or handhelds, i have a very hard time to believe that it would be too much. We are not talking about a full blown AAA game, but a downloadable game like ... lets say like Shovel Knight.

But yeah, you are right (nope, i dont think you are) and i conclude this dialog now.

More like awesome decision. The hit-pause gives the combat a sense of impact. I loved it in Wind Waker and from the looks of it I'll love it here.

Between this, Hotline Miami 2, and Shovel Knight (which I will be buying for the third time), my PS4 library is filling out nicely with quality "small titles."

From the UK press release:

“We’re delighted to be working with Game Freak to bring this heavyweight adventure to an audience we feel it will have relephants to,” said John Clark, the Senior Vice President of Commercial Publishing for SEGA Europe. “It’s a trunkful of fun and we think gamers are going to love it. Hopefully more than my rubbish elephant puns. ”

We have a game about a Turner-illustrated Rambo elephant spin-charging and ground-pounding through skyscrapers (AWESOME), yet the conversation still revolves around whether Game Freak jilted Nintendo. Politics, smh.

Yup, that is a badass elephant !

Loved Harmo Knight .... so come in my steam !

And LOL at the "we kinda forgot wiiu existed" xD

Why would you compare this to a Kickstarter project? Promising extra platforms is always a tactic used to get more people to pledge money.

We know that Wii U versions of almost all multiplatform games perform remarkably poorly. We also have no idea what kind of budget or time scope was allocated to this project. It could just be something they wanted to get out the door quickly as a test project. I don't think it's fair to compare it to something like Shovel Knight, which was a studio-defining game and all that that team had to work on.

Either way, it's unlikely that SEGA and Game Freak would happily leave easy money on the table. I find it hard to believe that they didn't evaluate the prospects of a Wii U version and, based on that evaluation, ultimately decide it wasn't worth it, at least for launch.

edit: by the way, the interview linked in the OP does have Turner mentioning that they are working with Unity:

How many elephants got hurt, burnt and crushed while developing this game?

Generally game development does not involve live animals. We are mostly working with Microsoft Excel, Unity, pens and paper, things like that. I can say with 100% certainty that we did not destroy an elephant while making this game. I would definitely remember something like that.

As long as Pokémon is still going strong, I'm cool with whatever GameFreak is doing. If it's on PC, even better.

But you better fucking leave Pokémon out of this.

Harmo Knight pretty much proved to me that James Turner (a.k.a. The One White Guy at Game Freak) is a genius.

The question is, is Tembo designed by Turner (in terms of gameplay), or just drawn by him?

I know with Harmo Knight, he did both the art and original design doc.

I don't get that excuse.

Maybe Sega is pissed off at Nintendo consoles after Sonic Boom's fiasco.

Sonic Boom's fiasco? Putting out a shit game is entirely on them...

All signs point to him being the director of this project if we are going by the interview in the OP.

Why is your new game not coming out for Wii U?

When I was writing the presentation documents for this game, I drew a
mockup poster, and I put the Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox logos at
the bottom. It seemed to fit, and it happened to stick that way. We thought about other hardware during development, but our hands were pretty full with those three platforms!

This is the best reason for anything ever

There will be a Wii U ver., why's everyone banging their heads at the lack of an announcement for it? Just be patient, y'all waited for Donkey Kong SNES to get on US eShop, you can wait for this.

I don't get that excuse.

Maybe Sega is pissed off at Nintendo consoles after Sonic Boom's fiasco.

Don't forget Ryu ga Gotoku 1+2 :P

They hold a grudge against the company that helped them make billions?

Ahahah what?

I don't know the exact details but I can assure you that Game Freak wants to make Pokemon multiplatform and Nintendo doesn't (of course).

The little grudge is my assumption of course but the excuse they gave is really lame. Maybe is Sega's doing because is their money but I don't think that is the case.

What an horrible pun and a terrible misconception...

Well is there at least some link giving some credit to what you are saying?

I love when people have to come up with reasons or conspiracy theories for why a game is not being ported to the poorest selling platform, as if "It's the poorest selling platform" isn't reason enough.

Game Freak insists that Pokémon stays on portables.

Mobile is not a good market compared to what the games do on 3DS. ($1bn revenue in 14 months. 5% of the entire smartphone industry revenue).

Going multiplatform is not something feasible. Games don't exactly do that well on the Vita, so what else will they put it on?

Please cite your source for Game Freak wanting Pokémon to be multiplatform.

Everyone seems to be reading too much into the Wii U thing. He's basically saying that there's no specific reason they decided to go with just those platforms, but it so happened. This is very much a side-project, and they wanted to make something multiplatform (against what they usually do).

It's a really small team, and that might have to do with why they don't launch the game on Wii U. Don't forget that Game Freak has never worked on Wii U (or Wii), so, there's no reason to expect them to be competent with developing for the platform. Also, the game seems to be in Unity, and there would be absolutely no surprise if a Director's Cut eventually made its way in Wii U.

After all, Turner does say they may have more plans for the character, like an Endless Runner spinoff.

So, instead of believing that Sega just didn't want to do a Wii U version after some big sales disappointments (albeit of their own doing), that somehow, Game Freak is making some big statement against Nintendo is the more likely reason?

It's Game Freak though. The company that, despite being independent, is so often confused as a Nintendo studio. No Wii U version is pretty odd if you ask me.
