Ten Reasons To Love The Xbox One Operating System

(Sony patent)

Man, the dude standing up and putting his arms in the air makes this 10x funnier.

Powerful, Universal IR Blaster
The trick to the Xbox One’s ability to control other devices lies in a powerful infrared signal blaster position atop the Kinect. Much like a universal remote, it comes preloaded with the proper codes for remote controllable devices from a wide range of manufacturers, and don’t be surprised if you can manually configure new devices that aren’t supported out of the box. When it comes to the power of the IR blaster, note that it was placed beneath the TV during the demo, yet it was still able to adjust the volume on the TV. Unlike a common remote control, it doesn’t have to point directly at the device due to the strength and breadth of its IR broadcast.

How does this work if it's not directly pointed at it? My Harmony is awesome, but I need to have it pointed at the devices and it is somewhat limited regarding powering on/off certain devices, I wish it was more customizable. I don't get how it would send receive the signal without being pointed at it.

I really hope they keep it like the UI I just saw where it looks like the game I have in my Tray is the biggest thing on the screen. The way the 360 is laid out now is obnoxious with giving me 1/4 of the screen for actual utility.

I'm also really excited about the potential of achievements 2.0 with the ability to just add new achievements and the possibility for daily challenges etc. I couldn't care less about my overall score, but I do get a great deal of enjoyment unlocking those things.

It is still 5 minutes. It just lets you choose which 5 minutes you want to upload from the past 30 minutes.

That is a weird limitation. Also it is saying all recording are in 1080p 60fps but only upload 720p 30fps. These sound like a bunch of facts that don't really mean anything. Can people get the full 30 min recording as high quality or is it just able to be a bunch of 5 min blocks.

Metro? No thanks.

I definitely disagree with that as a selling point for me, since Metro is precisely the reason I don't want Windows 8 or Windows Phone.

Yeah I think it is just going to be one of those things we need to see to understand.

Cool, the last time I saw the operating system in motion was during that interview after E3 where the lag was very pronounced. I hope everything is all fixed up and works at launch. The system isn't for me
yet
, but I hope it's a positive experience for all that choose it as their system of choice.

The question is can you "snap" live TV while playing a game? As a person that only really watches live sporting events this would be HUGE!

I don't think you can, but I don't think this is a limitation of the XB1, it's a limitation of the tuners in TV's.

It's doing things right. So far its supposedly silent, functions well in my living room and has a snappy OS, which is huge.

I really don't need any more consoles trying to pretend they are powerhouse machines when they clearly aren't, sounding like airplanes like the Ps3 and 360 launch units.

Do we have any details on how the Ps4 runs in terms of noise and OS speed?

I really want to see the interface actually running smoothly. All these write ups are fine, but I want to see video.

It looks like basically an extension of Windows 8/Mobile, with the apps and panes/squares.

I still haven't decided how I feel about the Windows 8 UI overall, since sometimes it feels like I'm just wading through nested menus like a Matryoshka doll. If the actual experience is more direct-to-app and less navigating through endless menus, then I would say it's an improvement.

Yes, that's what they've shown at the reveal.

you can play any game and snap TV, or any other app (Netflix, YouTube, IE, etc). You just can't snap two games, which makes sense because why would you want to?

Its too bad we don't get to see it in action, there will still be ads, most of the features are rather pointless when everyone has access to a personal screen and camera for Skyping and web browsing without having to sacrifice screen space on the television, and most of these features have nothing to do with better video games.

I look forward to a snappier OS. If that's all next-gen buys us, it's still better than what we have.

I was pleased to note in the article that they confirmed that the new Kinect will allow you to enter text, as well as just use commands.

I can't wait to put this OS through it's paces on launch date. Also, looking at how we've come since the blades till now, I'm sure we will see some awesome stuff from Microsoft here.

Custom soundtracks has nothing to do with better video games but it is still awesome. Also why would I want to use a 2nd device to videochat with a friend if we are both on XBL?

Yeah but the reveal was staged. I want to see it running on the actual console to believe it.

Edit: And I believe wizman is right, they never showed snapped live tv/game.

I'd like to see it in action just out of curiosity, hated every Xbox dash. This OS sounds faster and less cluttered which is very much a good thing.

I don't think they showed that. All I remember was something kind of like fantasy football stats and what looked like a twitter feed in the "snap" area.

No, Sony's PR/marketing team is frustratingly quiet when it comes to talking about the hardware/OS.

The fact that 80% of all Sony news outside of E3 and Gamescom come from @yosp's twitter is extremely telling.

I mean, they obviously said nothing because they wanted the OS-demo on-stage to be a big deal, but it's frustrating knowing so little.

I like that you can follow people. It would be cool to compare leader board, trophies, watch videos and etc of a game developer like Kojima or even a random celebrity.

Yep. And derailed after 3 posts. Same shit every day. After the OP I pretty much stop reading the "positive" x1 threads as they degenerate with all the crap posts which follows.

Learn to ignore derailment, and focus on getting the thread back in-order. Complaining about it changes little.

This isn't exclusive to XB1 threads, PS4 threads has similar issues, though it is less.

It is a legit question to ask if this is an advertorial. People who cry wolf are just being reactionary to anything slightly negative about their preferred plastic box.

Yes, that's what they've shown at the reveal.

Are you sure? I've only seen the type of snapping like on this MS event. Skype was snapped in the frame but not TV.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqvd06mrIrM

TV was input 'switched' full screen with games and music.

4'20" - snaps browser based charms with movie.
6'00" - snaps Skype to movie
7'00" - snaps NFL Fantasy stats to Live TV

Note: If you, or anyone, has seen a demo or confirmation that you can snap Live TV with games please fire me a link as that feature would be game changing for me.

Nice to hear about the video streaming but I wonder if there will be any options to load the full 30minutes on your computer or something.
