Tencent is becoming majority shareholder of Techland

The difference is you haven't lived in both places in order to make a proper comparison. And that is not saying the US is without its problems. But the difference is an order of magnitude apart. It's the difference between occasionally finding dog poop in your front yard and living next to a cesspit.

Living in a country does not make you knowledgeable about said country.

But Microsofts acquisition of ABK wasn't going to start a consolidation trend! /s
Only the hardest of fanboys believed that. As I said in the MS thread, I hope that the people gloating about the acquisition keep that same industry when the rest of the market starts rapidly moving.

Tencent has been buying publishers and developers for over a decade now. This has got nothing to do with ABK.
There is no doubt this move has been in place for a while, these kind of things don't happen in a week.

But you are fooling yourself if you don't believe MS acquisition of Acti won't set off a monsoon of moves within the overall industry. It has been waiting with tinder to ignite since MS acquired Bethesda. Their acquisition of ACTI sends a MASSIVE message not only to the potential buyers, but also to studios who are in an ever volatile industry.

There will be massive repercussions from their major, record breaking deals.

I'm pretty confident within 15 years Microsoft, Tencent, Epic and Amazon will own every publisher and developer on the planet. Tencent will also own Nintendo and Amazon will own the PlayStation brand.

Not even indy developers will be safe. All four of these companies will make so much money from their gaming revenue that they'll buy out whole countries and have their own personal military forces.

Scary times ahead.

It's been going on well before with Tencent, the fact people are trying to "connect the dots" between ABK and anything new now is rent free marketing. Seriously, Microsoft didn't invent acquisitions or mergers for the industry, they just happen to be the biggest so far.

Is it good? Can't tell, probably not but seems like Joe blow doesn't give a shit. But this ain't some new rodeo that Microsoft domino effected.

I am assuming you didn't see my follow up post:

Grabbing up devs like spider man....Sony and insomniac next lol

Chinese companies just roll in and buy into western developers and publishers.

Meanwhile you can't even launch a game in China unless you're doing so with a Chinese company.
They're just exploiting the rules of the western capitalist market. Maybe it's time for the EU and US to renegotiate their trade deals with China.

i dont like how western game companies cant buy chinese game companies. But chinese companies can own western game companies. The west must move the same way. Must be fair

People are quick to talk this down but has Tencent ever shut down anyone? IIRC they have always just let studios do whatever they want.

Also Techland is a private company so this was something their leadership wanted.
its just the hate for the ccp

Oh come now. You're not new here. We both know you've seen some real doozies worse than this. Shit, I probably said some.
Oh, we've both seen some whoppers - the next speculation thread was better than any sit-com I've ever seen. But, supporting foreign acquisitions by an entity backed by a Totalitarian Communist State - one who is literally perpetrating genocide as we type - who pushes mass censorship as public policy and who is making explicit moves - such as this very acquisition - to influence western acceptance of said censorship all in the name of "console wars"? I don't know mate, at least the bat-shit "SSD!" non-sense was based on the soothing voice of Mark Cerny.

I cannot argue with you, sir.

Jesus man...

It's like a rock and a hard place. Don't like Tencent, so naturally would applaud Microsoft, but I don't want Microsoft to buy up everything either. Amazon will just kill games. Google...should stick to mobile. Sony doesn't have the buying power but they can purchase some good studios that make sense.

This is where we are at...consolidation is the future...hell, it's the present. We'll be swimmin in it for a while...then we'll drown.

You'd probably be surprised how much buying power Sony actually has and what options they have beyond their own cash reserves. I have no idea what they will ultimately do, but don't count them out of an acquisition war.

Just enough shareholdings to put their CCP military spyware into the games.

In all seriousness, this seems to be their jam. They don't follow the path of MS and buy to own, but have these minority shareholdings (Yes this one is majority) in a shit ton of different studios.
Sony seems to have a hybrid approach where they buy most studios to own, but have bought minority shareholdings in others Like Epic and FromSoftware.

Microsoft = good
Everyone else= bad

Whatever you do, don't look where your TV or the rest of your stuff was built.
Yes, that's exactly what I said - everyone other than Microsoft is bad. Which is why those words appear in my post that you quoted. Excellent contribution.

"Durr" - guy's response to learning that a major corporation can kill a bunch of people and get away with no consequences in the US.
Even better: Tech companies in the US participate in NSA's spying on every single electronic communication in the world. Even better that they got the press to say it ended in 2015 when that actually marked the beginning of their outsourcing to these companies.

Rather, just hate for China in general.

What does this means for Dying Light, does Techland own the IP, can Tencent publish the games from now on, or does it belong to WB?

Doing some quick research, wb only published the first one, probably only for North America. The ip I believe belongs to techland/tencent.

Dying Light 2 was a seven year wait and when I look at the game it doesn't like it's been in development that long. Many mechanics are the same, it's not a step-up in the visuals and they even cut down on some previously announced stuff like major faction choices.

Now we're slowly entering a similar situation, around 18 months and zero news on what new they've been doing. I don't buy that the majority of team needs to work on DL2 post-launch support, especially with no big expansion announced like with The Following.
Whats Sony Santa Monica working on?
Whats Sucker Punch working on?
Whats The Coalition working on?
Whats Guerilla working on?

Are you even listening to yourself?

The issue of Tencent owning Epic is that essentially Chinese government can do a push of whatever the hell they want into Unreal as well as track anything through Unreal.

It's a bit of a tinfoil, but not like Tencent can do anything about it unless they want to have their execs disappear for re-education.
You mean like the US government was and has been doing??? Like with back doors to every social media app etc. Or how they were controlling Twitter?

I swear some of these people get their ideas of the US and other countries straight from shitty 80s action films, ignoring the biggest events of the past decade alone.
Living in a country does not make you knowledgeable about said country.
Yes, in fact a lot of Americans prove this hilariously.

Lol the multiple levels of irony from you claiming this.

Could have just left him to his delusions.

Speaking of multiple levels of irony, I'm pretty sure I was not addressing you unless you are a Tencent fanboy. I just love n00bs that come in here with 36 whole posts and an obnoxious attitude. Are you a CCP ambassador or whose alt are you?
