I always feel like I'm doing something wrong in the modern world when I don't utilize any of these services. Who are these people who need this much storage? What are they storing? WHY ARE THEY BETTER THAN ME?

I am looking at this gift horse in the mouth and am suspicious.

Although the actual worst case scenario would probably be similar to tresorit's 100 gigs: unusable by awful sync software.

Same here. Pretty even put a dent into my Google drive storage.

I love the idea of backing up my whole hard drive online in car of a hardware failure.

As is, I only have enough space to use it for my work (massive art related files) and its been a godsend having it someplace safe from corruption and also bring able to access them anywhere.

It's also a great way to share things between computers without needing a usb stick. Our a friend needs a file? Just send them a public url.

My music is all mirrored on Google music so I can stream it to my cell phone. My camera uploads get automatically uploaded so I can sort then our on my pc rather than phone. All my cell phone app info is on my drop box so getting it back from repair keeps me from having to redo my silly grocery list app.

Clouds are great! Bigger clouds are better!

Although I'd trade 100tb on a site with a bad interface in a heartbeat for 1tb on my Google drive.

signed up for 10tb.. crazy amount of space. Now I just need a google gigabit connection to be able to upload backups in a reasonable amount of time...

The space seems tempting but I'm not sure if it's the best place to save all my RAW pictures. Will definitely try, though. :)

Putting all of them on DVDs is just so stressful, especially since not every device comes with a disc drive these days.

It won't let me sign up, the location and birthday fields just show as blank O_o

Do it through there. Also remember to save that QQ number. It's your login, not your username.

Edit: Make sure on the top left corner you sing up for their QQ thing, not the email. Then download their app, and go back to the page in the OP, and click the big blue button to claim your cloud storage.

Edit 2:

Crap, it looks like my phone doesn't support their cloud app as I can't find it on Google Play. I'll have to put it on my Nexus 7... or I could use my bluestacks player on my laptop I guess.

EDIT: nm found it. Chinese characters threw it off.

Could they be using the magical Chinese hard drives in there server farms?

It seems the "catch" here is that you don't just get 10TB right off the bat. You start off with 1 TB that's actually yours, and once you get to 500 GB of used storage they expand your account to 2TB. 1.5 TBs used gets you expanded to 3, and so forth. I suspect the only reason this actually works is that hardly anyone will be using more than 500 GB let alone a full 10TB.

Is there any way to do thia without mobile (on my mac for instance)?

There's no way to do it without logging into the phone app. I tried to do it because I didn't want another app, and when you try to claim your data it gives you an error message along the lines, "Didn't sign in to Mobile app."

I don't know that I even understand why it's displayed this way to the user. From their perspective, they probably don't even have 500GB "allocated" to you, just sitting empty if you're only using a couple megs for example. There's not a contiguous partition where everything resides that's yours.

Hopefully I can just remove the phone app right away when this is done..

It's just for claiming the storage. I uninstalled the second I got the chance, and I've logged out and back in about 4 times and nothing has changed. You're good to go.

But do I want to store my stuff on the servers of a Chinese company?

Scratch that, do I want to store my stuff on any server of any country? :(

logged into the app, uploaded a picture to make sure it works, doesnt seem to let me claim the 10 gb

You just said logging into the app. Did you hit the blue button on the link in the OP? Got to log back in to the site on your desktop.

Well one advantage is that if you live in a country where pictures of candy are illegal, you can store your candy images on the server of a country like china. Then securely erase them from the original device, and just view the stored files via a proxy whenever you want.

You do know that by "viewing" the images you are downloading them right?

Yes. I believe I said "via a proxy". If you use the Tor browser it handles the hard work for you, making your IP anonymous and leaving nothing in a browser cache on your machine.

I don't bother with any of this, but I know in Europe and other parts of the world certain harmless (animated!) materials are illegal so it might be a good choice for them.

They're no different than the hoarders who have their garages filled from floor to ceiling with junk. Nobody needs it. Feel better?
