Tennis games are pathetic

What makes Mario Tennis GBC and GBA so great? I'm genuinely intrigued... Should one bother to purchase both or is one slightly better than the other, e.g. gameplay wise?

P.S. I managed to find Mario Tennis GBC in the wild recently but I can't say I was impressed with the gameplay right off the bat (granted I only played an hour or so). Is the control tighter on the GBA?
Anyone? Thanks.

Keep in mind it's got RPG elements, so your first few games you're working with a talentless character. But man, those last few tournaments are some of the best hours I've ever had in gaming.

1. Mario Tennis GBA (>Mario Golf GBA)
2. Tennis 2K2
3. Grand Slam Tennis

For me, it was

So underestimated...

I can't believe some people in this thread are saying Top Spin 2 was the best. I thought it was absolutely terrible. Top Spin 1 > Top Spin 3 > Top Spin 2.

Anyway I agree Grand Slam Tennis is quite fun. I had some friends over this past weekend and we battled it out all night (using nunchuks for movement) and it was just ridiculously fun.

Virtua tennis 2009 rocks. Same great VT3 formula with online added. Can't go wrong when you have evenly matched players in online.

Grand Slam Tennis is the greatest tennis game ever made in my opinion. It was my game of the year last year until NSMBW came out (and T6). Playing that game with the WM+ gave the game a ton of control, accurate control (you just have to remember to reset your position after every hit, pretty much like tennis players do).

My cousin and I were number 3 in the doubles rank the last time we played (don't know where we are now, I'm sure we are in the top 10 or 20, we were technically the best in the world :D). Man, if there weren't other games that came and took my attention away, I would have went for number 1 in singles :D

I loved the Mario Tennis on GBA

I want to give Grand Slam Tennis a shot for Wii, but $70? ehhhhhhhhhh

Mario Tennis for the Gameboy Color is the greatest sports game of ALL TIME.

EDIT: Just saw that I already posted in this thread 3 months back.

Super Tennis...

Using Phil!

This is one of those games that I played with my friends for YEARS every weekend. It was just that awesome and trully the first real Party game for the SNES.

No game has come close to the purity and precision that this game had. It was all about court movement, shot placement and trying to predict your opponents moves. Just like real tennis, if you took a chance on a shot there were real consequences. I remember we sometimes had rallies that lasted a good 50-60 shots it was awesome.. Matches that could take hours.

my fav tennis game this gen was Top Spin 2, it seemed the most balanced between arcade and sim. The Virtua Tennis series went downhill fast after the 1st one on Dreamcast which is a classic, the controls became too floaty and players dive at everything for no reason...pathetic indeed

the OP is right though, all of the tennis games on the HD gaming consoles had shit for rosters

how is GSM without M+? It is so cheap without M+ lol

Never tried it without the MotionPlus but it would probably still be one of the best tennis games I've played. I don't know if there's still an online-community for the game but the single-player career-mode and local multiplayer are really fun.

To be hones, sometimes the MotionPlus makes the game a little frustrating as you have to recalibrate quite often, but without this add-on placing the ball left and right on the field is probably tied to the timing a la Wii Sports.

I'd say but it!

Mario Tennis on consoles has better gameplay, but the RPG elements on the handheld gives me a hard time deciding which is better. I wish they would just make a console game with story mode of the handhelds games.

Anyone else waiting with anticipation for Hot Shots Tennis? I loved Hot Shots Golf and I imagine that there version of tennis will be much more accessible and it's got a story mode plus Helghast!

Helghast playing tennis? That looks so sick. Why can't this have a ps3 version too?

Anyone remember this? I remember some wasted sunny saturday afternoons playing this on the Megadrive/Genesis. If i remember correctly the cartridge had ports inbuilt to allow for extra controllers.

Good times.

Came in here to post this. Had a lot of good 'throwing the controller at the wall' times with Mario Tennis 64. Whoever said Wii Tennis was good is smoking some good crack though.

It will probably have good mechanics and all, but I really HATE power shots in tennis games. So if I'm buying it, it has to have an option to turn em off.

I'm gonna go pick it up then. If I'm not a fan, I can always go buy an M+. I think M+ would be a little too complicated though to play with 2 people, since I am no irl tennis pro lol.

Virtua Tennis/Power Smash 3 is great. Just don't look for a simulation of the sport. As a video game it is fun as hell and competive (except for the hard to pull off, but broken shot move that ruins the game).

The only good and recent tennis game is Dream Match Tennis for PC.

Back in the days, Final Match Tennis and Jimmy Connors were the shit.

Since everyone mentioned some of the best already, I want to give a nod to Prince of Tennis: Crystal Drive for the DS.

It's a very solid tennis game, on top of having all the ridiculous special moves from the manga/anime.

Sadly, no Tezuka Zone Extinction though. =(

Yeah I love this game, and I like the Manga/Anime, even though it jumped the shark at the end.

Tha game is pretty hard, if you want to get all the characters and trainers with insane requirements.

I'm at episode 30 or 40 or something and I know it has some crazy shit but GOD-DAMN!

The way he hits the ball is pretty straight too, no spin or anything :lol

this is from the mediocre movie. the series itself wont get this absurd. well at least the "core". then there are additional 20-or-so episodes released as OVA, that come close to this stupidity

Mario Tennis on Gamecube is the best Tennis game ever made.

This removes the need of actually making new Tennis games. Only remakes of this one in beautifuller graphics might be needed down the line.

Ah okay then, kinda like the stuff so far so good to know the series doesn't get that bad.

Topspin for Xbox and Xbox Live is by far and away the best tennis game ever made for play against friends or online. Nothing has even come close since minus Virtua Tennis 3, and that game was broken for online play for too many reasons.

Also kudos for anyone who played Capriati tennis on the Genesis, that game was awesome. And what's this about 2K no longer making tennis games?

Was this released in the U.S.?

My vote is to Smash Court 2 as well. Anyone know if there are any tennis games coming out anytime soon?
