I think Tree of Life was great, although i do agree with most of the critiques moved to it (from Movie-gaf at least) yet from this trailer i have the bad feeling this will take all the bad parts of Tree of Life and use them into a movie.
Like Sean Penn's parts for the whole thing.

What's wrong with the Penn parts?

Beautiful trailer to what looks like another beautiful Malick movie. At this point, I'll be there no matter how much or how little narrative is actually in his films just because of how hypnotic they are with the visuals + music. People should know what to expect from him by now.

Easily the weakest/least relevant part of the movie. All they do is frame the narrative--they don't really add anything. Even Penn didn't like them, or at least how they were edited/used.
They're the most relevant, the film is about the balance of parenting, seeing the end result is the whole point. Certainly if they are 'weaker' or not is a fair debate though.

Didn't really enjoy Tree of Life if you don't count the awesome visuals and soundtrack. This seems too much like Tree of Life :/ I will watch it for visuals and music yet again.

Although Malick is often praised (rightfully) for his visuals, but his use of (classical) music probably adds just as much to his movies, and really elevates some of his scenes to a completely new level. .

What is the end result? What you're describing isn't really what we got. We have a few shots of Penn looking pensive with his wife(?), eyeing a woman as she walks by, listening without interest to a coworker, and semi-smiling on an elevator. Then, of course, the ending, which I didn't like.

Terrence Malick is becoming the art house Tim Burton. The guy really needs to change his art direction, scores, and cinematography. Not that its bad but now everything is starting to feel the same :(

That said I will be there day one for this. Tree of Life was fantastic

If you wished for more, and/or richer detailing of his contentment, or lack of, that's fair enough, I certainly did, but what we do get of his restlessness is the result of the style, and balance of the parenting. How detailed the 'report card' we get of the parenting is arguably lacking, but getting the card at all I think is essential.

I'd like to know a little more about Malick's youth, because the film seems to promote a more matriarchal upbringing than was very typical of the time.

What a stunning trailer. The Tree of Life was the best film of the last decade and I can't wait to see Malick in rapid fire mode, even if he does fall flat.

Which of the upcoming Malick movies got horrible reviews? This one or the Bale one?

Anyway, it doesn't look like something I'd be interested in watching personally.

The two films with Bale aren't finished yet. This got mixed reviews, not horrible ones. It's 50% on RottenTomatoes...divisive like all his other movies.

All his others? Really?

To use RT, as you did.

Badlands 98%
Days of Heaven 93%
The Thin Red Line 78%
The New World 61%
Tree of Life 84%

50% is notably below par for his record.

Impossible to trust RT for reviews older than a decade ago, it's not accurate since it only is brief sampling. When all is said and done, I could see it being received like The New World, so yes on par.

Fine, than the sample field is two films, with an average of low seventies, making fifty still notably below.

I love The Thin Red Line, but it's hard for me to get into his other stuff. Tree of Light was alright. Visuals were absolutely amazing, though.

Well, that makes me even less interested in this then. :P

The New World is my favorite Malick movie. His malickianisms lend themselves really well to the setting. Days of Heaven is the only one I have not seen.

What's wrong with the Penn parts?
They weren't sufficently fleshed out to add much to the movie and the little they implied, was really not necessary overall, i think.
Plus they had that horrible schlock for a finale, easily the worst part of the movie.

It felt like he did wanted to add something about his childhood's reflection on his adulthood, but didn't want to go too much down that rabbit hole.
I wish he had just closed the film on the car leaving the house.
This is the one people were saying felt like a parody of a Malick film.
It does feel like it from the trailer, but it might just be a bad trailer.
After i saw the Tree of Life trailer i was hooked, after seeing this i don't know if it's a self parody or not.

Replace "Directed by Terrence Malick" with "Directed by a Shitty Film School Student" and you have my thoughts on this movie and how he shoots most his movies..

Terrence Malick is the Instagram of Photography.

COME AT ME BRO

I have the attention span of a Walrus and even I must admit the amazingness of Thin Red Line.

Dat. Nick Nolte acting. what the flying circus fuck.

Hmm I don't know. I'm a Malick fan who wasn't crazy about Tree of Life. This looks like more of the same.

To be honest, none of his future projects sound all that exciting.

I loved tree of life so I can't wait for this.

For all the people that find his movies boring, you should probably smoke some weed and relax while watching it instead of hoping for some straightforward story. I feel like his movies take a couple of views to completely grasp and let everything sink in.
