Terrible, awful video game music.

The Amstrad CPC version of Robocop always gave me that nails-on-a-chalkboard feeling:

Then I heard it in an early 90s washing machine advert, which is pretty random and total nightmare fuel:

Then it came up when I was listening to overclocked remix radio, and I kinda liked it again:

I present to you, the C64 version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFgXGw_kXpc

It's actually amazing. It has a really long intro, but once it gets going it's great.

The Gameboy version of the theme is objectively the best though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhZBDNQ3gas

cool ranch

Zelda: Oracle of Ages is the first game I thought of. The village theme and the "inside friendly buildings" theme (idk what it's actually called) are the worst.

There's 1 song from Tales of Graces that's the same 3 notes over and over again. You're waiting for the song to kick in but it never does. Can't remember what's it's called but it's some cave music.

Came to post Blue Dragon.

Glad someone beat me to the punch.

Unsurprised that someone disagrees, despite the fact that the boss theme sounds like something from the South Park anime parody.

DoA 5 OST is pure shit, is the main reason that I hate that game.
I just hate the circus and hip hop songs, they are the worst. =(

I cant believe i actually seen with my eyes Chrono Cross and Symphony of the Night in this thread

Apparently, BioWare's plan was to use new remixes of classic Sonic tunes. At the last minute, they found out that Sega didn't own the rights to the music from the first two games, so the music in the game was composed quickly just so the game would have a soundtrack by the time it shipped.

Haha yeah. There's "quick", and there's "last minute GCSE Music composition coursework quick". The dude must have absolutely bricked one to have been forced to put that in the game.

In otherwise mediocre OST with a few good songs comes this...thing. I think this track sums up Time & Eternity in its entirety:

Time & Eternity OST - Home
http://youtu.be/EqH7adJPMAI

What's made even worse is that this is the guy who wrote it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuzo_Koshiro

*sigh* You used to be cool, Koshiro.

You will hear this song the most in the game. While an awful song in itself, it's played during the "tea time" sections where the characters sit around at home base chatting it up. Which happens a lot.

Also, I think the "Home" theme is a rip off of a much, MUCH better theme from Grandia.

Grandia - At Dinner
http://youtu.be/QfDazD52D50

Listen to those back to back and you'll hear it. Also listen to Grandia's second as it'll cleanse the shit storm that is Home.

You, sir, are wrong and I don't like you.

I can't stand that song. For a game that has a good sound track you here this terrible song over and over 100 times more than any of the others. They should have not had battle music.

Those crappy synth violins da da daaaaaaaaa da da daaaaaaaaa. So corny.

Final Toccata though I never got tired of that song. Beautiful piece. I think some if you must have been stuck in the inverted castle for a long time. It's true there is less music for different areas in the inverted castle but by the time you get there you should be able to fly through area with all the abilities you've gained so you should be able to complete it faster.

Crazy Chocobo music from FF XIII-2 was great

Agreed. Lost me when he linked that. I guess I'm in the mood for something a little less serious when I'm riding a giant yellow chicken.

Anyway, any music criticism referring to age (e.g., "...if I was 12"), comes off as more as posturing than saying anything critical.

I really hate some of the Persona 4 Arena tracks and think they're garbage. As I'm used to Persona music being absolutely amazing it's just painful for me to listen to this crap.

The Hero from Junes
Like a Dragon
A Pure-Hearted Beast
Spirited Girl

I agree with you about all of those except Spirited Girl. I'll loop that shit for hours and I don't even like her character.

Edit: But I don't loop it for nearly as long as I'll loop Seeker of Truth or Heartful Cry (In Mayonaka Arena).

That Chrono Cross music takes me back...

...to the exact moment where I realized this would be the battle theme music I'd have to listen to for the entire game. :C

I'm glad at least there were a lot of moments where the background music took over.

So I came into the thread expecting the worst, and actually found that a lot of music wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be. Granted, there are a lot of different tastes from many people, but I thought for the most part the biggest crime for most songs is they are repititive or bland.

And then I heard this and couldn't stop laughing.

Well done to the creator for making a horror track that is so abysmal that my first reaction to it was pure laughter.

10. The music isn't abysmally bad, but plays so often it makes you want to puke.

Examples:
Chrono Cross: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJeHtVIGsWY

Frankly I can think of far more cases of bad music in games than of good ones, generally speaking. Anyway, just to point cases that stuck into my mind...
A lot of Persona 4's atrocious Jpop made me wish to punch the screen from time to time.
Also, I didn't play the game but Dragon's Dogma title screen theme was hilariously bad.

Wrong bad posts. You want PAIN? You want AGONY? Check below.

It's DeS' usual Nexus theme gone wrong, actual compositional incompetance, not a lack of understanding of what the composer had wrought.

I can't stop laughing every time I hear the RE: Director's Cut Basement music. Every single time.
Same here, this is a masterpiece.
The game cover used for the video makes it even funnier, imagine zombies coming at you playing MIDI trumpet.

edit: Rave Rush is high level too, nice find :D Be sure to listen to it to the end, there are a lot of awesome variations.

Came to post Blue Dragon.

Glad someone beat me to the punch.

Unsurprised that someone disagrees, despite the fact that the boss theme sounds like something from the South Park anime parody.

It's Nobuo Uematsu making a 70's hard rock song with Ian Gillan from Deep Purple on vocals. To me that's like a match made in heaven, it actually baffles me that GAF seems to hate it so much.

2., 10.: Amiga classic Savage.
2. Roadrunner (Super Famicom). I don't know ... the samples sound very cheap, it does not feel right.

I think people are being too hard on Adventures of Rad Gravity.
I believe it is atonal, and sure is weird (and funny), but nowhere as bad as Resident Evil :) (many if not most Youtube commentors seems to have the same opinion)

Dragon's Dogma menu music. Its okay until you get to this part:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=foTLUpPw1FA
Imagine if this was the menu theme for Dark Souls 2.

This doesn't even sound like video game music. It sounds like some weird Black Eyed Peas shit, only better.

5. Vocal songs with corny/cringey lyrics

Examples
Blue Dragon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUjxPj3al5U
That's... That's Ian Gillian.

This is amazing.

I need to play Blue Dragon.

OP managed to name both Chrono Cross and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in a thread about terrible, awful music.

I don't think you can fail any harder than that.
