Terrorist attack in London [up: 6 people killed, ~50 injured, 3 attackers dead]

British Prime Minister Theresa May called on Sunday for a stronger response to Islamist extremism after three attackers drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed others nearby, killing seven people and injuring 48.

London's Metropolitan Police arrested 12 people in the Barking district of east London in connection with the attack and raids were continuing there, the force said.

The attack occurred five days before a parliamentary election and was the third to hit Britain in less than three months. May said the vote would go ahead as planned on Thursday.

"It is time to say enough is enough," the Conservative leader said in a televised statement outside her Downing Street office, where flags few at half-mast.

"We cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are," May said, calling for a beefed-up counter-terrorism strategy that could include longer jail sentences for some offences and new cyberspace regulations.

Really hard to see what can be done to protect against these kinds of attacks (or, you can put in barriers in places but you can't do that in the whole country everywhere).

Seems like a person(s) may have fallen into the Thames from London Bridge and Police boats are heading to the area.

That's the scary thing, anyone driving a vehicle could potentially cause dozens of casualties. Why spend time, money and risk being caught building rudimentary bombs when you can just drive a car into people instead?

Condolences to the victims and their families, best wishes to those injured, and fuck the perpetrator.

Yep, this style of attack in particular seems almost impossible to stop.

So they still haven't place any protective barriers between the road and the walkways?

You know you can just fill water in these things

Different place, but this kind of terrorist attack was totally inevitable. Why go to all the trouble to plan and execute a bomb attack when you could take out people with a vehicle.

Sadly, this kind of shit is bound to become commonplace around the West.

The problem is scale. You're talking about every high street, up and down the country just for starters. It's nigh on impossible to prevent someone driving a vehicle at pedestrians. There's just too many opportunities to do it. The only effective measure is to try and identify those likely to commit such a crime before they act.

As if these water barriers would help shit.
German police tested concrete barriers after the christmas market attack and they couldn't really stop a truck at decent speed.

If this cunt was on a security "watch-list", there will be hell to pay.

We're approaching the times when any person even suspected in planning stuff like this will have to be dealt with severely,

Yeah there's multiple tweets filing up my timeline right now, stay safe Londoner's and let's hope this isn't as bad it it initially is sounding.

No need to comment until there is real, official news on this.

"andythinkpad" you're just stupid for trying to be the anti-terrorist expert who walks on injured/dead people tonight

Well so far these attacks have only been in famous tourist spots. I doubt they're going to try to run a crowd over in a suburb of Surrey.

One witness is stating around 5 people are being treated on the BBC news article. Questions still remain like is the man still being held up? Drove off?

fuck the world.

RIP to those killed, serious sympathies to those affected by the losses.

much love to London, sorry to have to go through this [again].
