Tetsuya Nomura Is No Longer Directing Final Fantasy XV

I'm glad KHIII is getting the go-ahead.

I want it way more than XV.

And Tabata is good, given his work on Type-0, which was an okay game.

It sounds like the game is completely planned and Nomura is no longer orchestrating the production. How much more of the game needs directed other than the execuation of the games fabrication??

HEY GUYS WE STILL EXIST.

I mean it literally just says "IN DEVELOPMENT" at the end. That's messed up. Like the main character says "it's been a long journey" or some shit and looks at the moon and then the title shows and it just says "in development." It's like they're trolling us, Kagari. :(

It's alive though, right...?

...right?

i guess technically

the way Rob Ford is "alive"

lets get this show on the road

For real

Good. Im sorry but I see this as a good thing. And Crisis Core was good right? I didnt play through it, but I know I want Nomura away from FF if at all possible. Let him go make KH games over and over and ruin that franchise. FF needs to come back, it deserves so much better. The turnaround of the latest MMO is a great first step and this is a huge second one.

There is a demo next year... pretty sure it won't take 5 years until it release.

And I don't think Nomura was that much ''needed'' at this stage of the production anyway, I guess?

This game isn't coming out any time soon, is it?

nah it sounds like it's actually coming since nomura is now focused on kh3. tabata was co-directing it anyway so it was two directors down to one so that must mean kh3 just started development and ffxv will be nearing its completion date. they probably need to polish a lot of technical features and refine gameplay, so nomura must've been like, "you guys can handle it. kh3 needs me."

So let me get this straight: Nomura now full time on KH3 and the guy who made two of the best handheld Final Fantasy games (and viewed favorably by the fanbase) is finishing FFXV? This is the best god damn news ever for these two games.

Honestly, this might be ironically a good sign of development. They're honestly probably just wrapping up development at this point, so he doesn't need to lead story progression and other stuff like that. Tabata is probably just polishing up the kinks and looking at the gameplay now.

NEXT YEAR! YEAR OF XV!

I'm really hoping this is the case, cause it'd be kind of sad if Nomura was forced off the project or something. Also, if this was the case, it'd mean that the game is (hopefully) closer to release :)

Now Nomura can focus on KHIII, which makes me mighty happy. I need both XV and KHIII as soon as possible. I'm too hyped for them both!!

Really glad to see Tabata getting high profile work. I loved Crisis Core. After finishing it I immediately looked up his other credits.

It might actually be a really good idea. The foundation was laid years ago, and the idea that he should handle the two most anticipated Square Enix titles, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV at the same time must have been too much.

They said it themselves, Nomura is really needed for Kingdom Hearts, it is his series and he can pull his heart and soul into it.

As for FFXV, whoever takes over, in this case Tabata, will finish what was started and bring this project to a good close.

They're just going to keep making new trailers and switching out directors until the end of days. Final Fantasy XV is the endless vicious loop of despair. It truly is the final fantasy.

I was expecting like... a year at least. Goddamn.

Not sure how this will help FF come back by losing the person responsible for the series most popular characters......

Ejecting Nomura isn't going to suddenly help FF come back when he had little if nothing to do with its descent.

The "in development" is killing me as well as the trailer being mainly for the demo. Legit, I hope they aren't focusing on the demo over the main game to get it out in 2015.

I was expecting like... a year at least. Goddamn.

taken in the full picture of things, it's easy to see Nomura coming to the higher ups at Square and updating them on the progress and saying "It may be like another six months to a year longer than we anticipated yet again so... late 2016, early 2017?" and them going "alright dude, enough is enough. Work on Kingdom Hearts III, you need to focus."

Now the big question here is what happens if Tabata also can't get FFXV off the ground.

Because between him and Yoshida, they are probably the only folks getting FF off the ground at this point (and Yoshida has been under-fire somewhat for some recent 14 design decisions, but who knows if that is some immediate post-patch criticism or a deeper problem here).

Hahaha

I cannot wait for launch in 2016. I have almost zero interest in playing it (though I'll keep an open mind until I see some hands-on impressions), but I am dying to read the post-mortem interviews on this decade-long joke.

WHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAT!?

Well there goes most of my hype for FFXV, fuck.

At least Kingdom Hearts III will get the attention it deserves though... why the hell didn't he do this years ago? God damn it.

The new trailer didn't shine with the usual FF glamour to me. The first reveal with Leviathan and the invasion in town was really pretty with lots of stuff going on and it was impressive. Now we get some open world with a car full of jaggies, terrible dialogue and clunky battle animations.

Glad I'm not the only one who wasn't impressed.

I just fail to understand why some people think Tabata will the messiah to save this game. I mean, sure he will complete it and ship it but I really don't have any confidence in him to make this a quality FF game.

Most of his experience is making handhelds and mobile games and some have pretty big problems.

Type-0 can be considered another game that had to be salvaged and it really shows.

I'm trying to stay optimistic and hoping this is the case. That there's nothing more for him to do on that project so now he can focus on getting KH3 up to speed.

i guess the hope is the game is far enough along that Tabata can finish it up and still maintain the assumed quality it would have had under Nomura

of course since I've never been fond of Nomura it seems to me a wild roll of the dice no whether it's Tabata or Nomura

last time I felt safe about a FF game Matsuno was working on it, and I did love FFXII... but even that didn't end well for Matsuno.

This is his first console game and as so, I want to given him the benefit of the doubt. Also 3rd Birthday was a rock solid TPS, considering it was released on the PSP, only really hurt by the writing (thanks Lord Toriyama).

Edit: Is not like KH2 was a "quality" game either

Edit 2: Imagine the state of the game under Nomura for SE to take this decision

At least Tabata is better than Toriyama. His direction might not be the best but he is very dedicated. I still remember he made a video message to promise gamers that they would make changes to Type-0 based on the feedback got from the first demo. And he delivered.

Which mod was it that said he'd leave the company if this happened... Ummmm
Someone said that over XV?

We already knew this would be his only FF game so while this sucks for me, I don't think that would've ever been smart to say.

Now if he left KH then I absolutely believe he would be done at Square.

so man we dont even get a "releases in 2016" notice in the trailer itself, so this shit is gonna be another fifty years in development isn't it?

Most likely, Square's refusing to be realistic and is hoping to put the game out in 2015, but doesn't want to hype people because an ACTUAL delay on this game would be catastrophic. Whatever year they pick has to be the year, when they pick a month it'll have to be that month--hell, I think people would start doubting the game's existence if it got pushed back even a single week.

And, I'm seriously hoping that Tabata pops up and sees what Nomura had, finds out Nomura has basically a 70-80% done game and was dicking about with adding more zippers onto some outfits instead of just doing the final bits necessary to get the damn thing out the door.

Can they just ask Mistwalker and Gooch to direct FFXV? With changes like this one I'm not even sure we'll get the same gameplay we expected FFXV to be years ago.

Why are people shitting on Nomura all of a sudden? Before XV, all he ever did for Final Fantasy was design monsters and characters mostly.

I still think XV will be very much a Nomira game and all they're doing now is polishing up the game before it's released and hopefully we won't have to wait too long for KH 3.
