As a new resident of Dallas, I can't say enough about this city.

I moved here from New York and I really don't miss the crazy high rents there anymore ;)

I can go out here for a reasonable price and I don't need to rely on the train anymore. It's great :D

also good food everywhere.

Yep, visit Fogo De Ciao or Texas De Brazil:D Also Cyclone Anaya's has a margarita called the perfect margarita. Drink a couple of those and I guarantee you won't be able to walk straight:lol Addison has a pretty hot nightlife too. Gloria's is awesome if you love latinas like me:D

Oh my god! I love that place. And I didn't feel the need to eat for almost a week after I went there.

As a fellow Texan (born in Dallas, grew up in Irving, now living in East Texas) Someone needs to make a list of all of the great places to check out in a city by city structure. I've never been to Austin for instance and I would love to make a weekend trip and see some great places (along with rollergirls ;) ). Perusing 9 pages to look for some out of the way place is kind of hard and it might help other Texans/tourists find some cool places to visit.

Hey now, Dallas and Houston both have roller derby leagues too ;).

Dallas has Assassination City Roller Derby (Great), and Dallas Derby Devils (Pretty OK).

Hmm.. I never knew that. I only heard of the derby leagues out of Austin. Go figure. Although, I live almost 2 hrs from Dallas now. Where in the city do they play?

Went to Dough for Valentine's day this year. Probably the bet pizza I have had in Texas.

Also, I like prefer Paloma Blanca's chips and salsas over everything else in San Antonio that I have had. The only problem is the chip bowl is too small.
I could eat the chips and salsa from Los Barrios everyday for the rest of my life. I love that place, been eating there since I was a kid. Nice family too it's a shame what happened to the grandmother that started the place.

Anyone here been to Kerrville?

Visited the place a few years ago with the family...beautiful place if I'm recalling correctly.

I haven't been to DDD since they moved, but they're somewhere in Richland Hills now. AC Derby is in Mesquite.

Kerrville is really nice. We had a family reunion there there. Very green and some decent local rivers.

Ahh ok. I'll have to check those out then.

I'll quote what I put earlier about Austin with a few additions:

esther1a.gif

-Esther's Follies: A vaudeville-like comedy and magic show that is really funny. It's been an Austin mainstay for decades.

BartonSprings_Diver_WVO.jpg

-Barton Springs: A natural swimming pool fed by a cold spring. The water is always 67 degrees year-round, making it cold in the summer, and warm during the winter.

1235427667_3d04ff644f.jpg

-Hamilton's Pool: Another naturally-formed swimming pool, but this one is located inside a grotto (cave that collapsed thousands/million of years ago) and is fed by a waterfall. It's located on a nature preserve, so there's a trail through the woods that you can go through that is also quite nice. Recently, part of the movie Predators was filmed here. EDIT: try to avoid coming on a weekend. Only 75 cars are allowed to park at the entrance to the park, and others are not allowed in until others leave, which means that you could be stuck in a line of cars for ages in the heat. It's much easier to get in on a weekday. If you can only come on a weekend, try to get there early. Also, bring a cooler with some drinks. There aren't any water fountains or anything at the preserve, and you don't want to get dehydrated.

2321495136_329630c612.jpg

Alamo Drafthouse: Greatest movie theater in the world. Look through the menu before the show, pick what food and drink (yes, they serve alcohol) you want, write it on a piece of paper, and a waiter will serve it to you during the movie. They also have a lot of awesome events and shows, like Master Pancake Theater, which is like a live version of MST3K.

austin_bats.jpg

Bats: Austin is home to the largest urban bat population in the world. During the summer, it's popular to watch the bats emerge from their home under the Congress Avenue Bridge at sunset to feed on insects.

4279642487_730a6a3133.jpg

6th Street: The so-called "Party District" of Austin. There are shops and stuff here, and of course, the Ritz (the home location of the Alamo Drafthouse), but mostly there are bars. Lots and lots of bars. I can't tell you much other than that since I'm under-aged, but this place is kind of famous, so if you like alcohol, you'll probably like this place, I guess.

waterloo.gif

Waterloo Records: A famous music store with a wide selection of CDs and Vinyl. Lots of obscure stuff, too.

Does anybody else have anything that they would like to add?

I've moved back to Austin recently, I grew up around here, I have always liked it a lot, and I still have to agree.

The worst are the people who move to Austin from somewhere else, are now an expert and can't imagine anyone liking anywhere else, or not talking down the place where they came from in order to praise Austin more.

I defended Dallas (my former city, for 10 years) to some "Austin folks" (pretty much all from somewhere else) a few weeks ago and got attacked like a pack of wild dogs were after me. I had a few give me the "Well, I'm from Dallas," or "I lived in Dallas," lines, but I quickly found out that none of them ever actually lived inside the city, they were all from the sterile suburbs, or were just passing through, and knew nothing really about the great local spots. Well, no shit, I'd not appreciate Dallas too, if I had experienced it through Plano, Richardson or the DFW airport.

Austin really is great, but it's not the end-all-be-all of Texas. Some people might like other things and other places. Thankfully, in Texas you've got tremendous diversity.
I lived in Houston and Austin for significant amounts of time. Austin, 14 years; Houston about 10.

Austin seemed to change a lot in the 2000s and become extravagantly commercialized. There's been a huge amount of condo building in (sometimes awful) parts of town and downtown, along with a trendy reinvigoration of South Congress. With that came lots of traffic and population growth.

It's not really that great.

I think "extravagantly" is perhaps a bit too strong, but there's no question it became much more commercialized. That said, I think most of that has occurred in northern Austin (the Domain being the obvious example), but it's also stretched south, especially in Sunset Valley and around the Slaughter area. The East side is getting more of gentrification of late, which is a shame.

The Oasis, food wise, is overpriced and about as mediocre as it comes, but the view is nice. I haven't been there since it burned down and was rebuilt, but it is popular. It's a bit like Mozart's in that regard.

Of all the states, I'd be willing to bet that Texas is the least likely to be suffering from a lack of state celebration.

True! We have so many reasons to love this state that it is damn near a requirement to celebrate daily! :D

Reminds me, Houston has much better Haunted Houses than Vegas for some reason.

Oh and Movie theaters. The Theaters in Vegas are all buried deep inside casinos. You have to walk past every slot machine before you get there. Houston has some very nice upscale theaters.

But Vegas does have a year round Drive In so that counts for a lot.

Can you still drink and drive in Texas?

From what I heard, you could legally drink while driving in Texas as long as you did not go over the legal limit. Pretty dangerous game to play though.

No, we have open container laws.

Of course you can't drink while driving. That's absurd.

Ah, but you can have a drink and drive home.

Personally I think one beer is already pushing it. Three and above is downright fucking crazy.

Yeah but he was talking about drinking while driving, which is just nuts. Though we do have drivethrough liquor stores that will give you mixed drinks, so I can see where he gets the idea!

Besides, you can have a drink and then drive (as long as you are still unimpaired) anywhere, not just in TX.

I'm not sure about the TX drivethroughs, but the ones in LA will give you a styrofoam cup full of hooch and tape a straw to the lid. You know, for safety.

The Santikos Silverado IMAX is the only theater in Houston I'll go to. All digital DLP on every screen, 100% digital sound with brand new speakers, a restaurant, a bar (that has decent prices, too), and (the best part) special screens that allow NOBODY UNDER 18!

The Round Rock in Round Rock Texas :)

I lived within walking distance of it, Sam Bass Cemetary is near my old home.

Now I'm in Houston...and it sucks >_>;

I like Round Rock. I live about 30 minutes away, but I tend to visit there a lot for shopping/eateries. Plus, my wife and I enjoy a Round Rock Express game from time to time.

Hmm... they fail for only serving it during weekend brunch.

Aside from Trudy's, as I mentioned before, County Line has my favorite cfs. They only offer it on Mondays though.

I haven't found a place that beats Hoover's for chicken fried steak.

You could up until 2001. And many people did, e.g., grabbing a beer for the drive home from work.
Passengers could drink until 2001. Drivers haven't legally been allowed to drink while driving since 1987.

Though looking all of this up, I can find articles up through at least 2006 that say in the states of Mississippi, Indiana, and Montana you can still drink while driving. That's craziness. Not as absurd as I thought, I guess.

What I find most amusing about Round Rock is how celebrated and recognized Sam Bass is. Sam Bass this, Sam Bass that. People seem to forget that "outlaw" means "criminal." It's pretty funny that they would name a cemetery after a man famous for killing and robbing.

And up until 2001, you could have an open container, even if the driver were the only person in the car ...
